Counterfeit Gentlemen: Manhood and Humor in the Old South (New Perspectives on the History of the South), by John Mayfield

"Will soon stand with such classic works as those by William R. Taylor and Michael O'Brien in the realm of Southern letters."--Bertram Wyatt-Brown, author of Southern Honor

"Counterfeit Gentlemen captures a volatile region laughing (uneasily) at itself, and it is the freshest interpretation of the Old South to come along in a decade."--Stephen Berry, author of All That Makes a Man

Counterfeit Gentlemen is a stunning reappraisal of Southern manhood and identity that uses humor and humorists to carry the readerinto the very heart of antebellum culture..

What does it mean to be a man in the pre–Civil War South? And how can we answer the question from the perspective of the early twenty-first century? John Mayfield does so by revealing how early nineteenth-century Southern humorists addressed the anxieties felt by men seeking to chart a new path between the old honor culture and the new market culture. Lacking the constraints imposed by journalism or proper literature, these writers created fictional worlds where manhood and identity could be tested and explored.

Preoccupied alternately by moonlight and magnolias and racism and rape, we have continually presented ourselves with an Old South so mirthless it couldn't breathe. If all Mayfield did was remind us that Old Southerners laughed, he would have accomplished something. But he also offers a sophisticated analysis of the social functions humor performed and the social anxieties it reflected.

The Deep Blue Good-by: A Travis McGee Novel, by John D. MacDonald

From a beloved master of crime fiction, The Deep Blue Good-by is one of many classic novels featuring Travis McGee, the hard-boiled detective who lives on a houseboat.

Travis McGee is a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. He’s also a knight-errant who’s wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. He only works when his cash runs out, and his rule is simple: He’ll help you find whatever was taken from you, as long as he can keep half.

“John D. MacDonald was the great entertainer of our age, and a mesmerizing storyteller.”—Stephen King

McGee isn’t particularly strapped for cash, but how can anyone say no to Cathy, a sweet backwoods girl who’s been tortured repeatedly by her manipulative ex-boyfriend Junior Allen? What Travis isn’t anticipating is just how many women Junior has torn apart and left in his wake. Enter Junior’s latest victim, Lois Atkinson.

Frail and broken, Lois can barely get out of bed when Travis finds her, let alone keep herself alive. But Travis turns into Mother McGee, giving Lois new life as he looks for the ruthless man who steals women’s spirits and livelihoods. But he can’t guess how violent his quest is soon to become. He’ll learn the hard way that there must be casualties in this game of cat and mouse.

Review
Praise for John D. MacDonald and the Travis McGee novels

“The great entertainer of our age, and a mesmerizing storyteller.”—Stephen King

“My favorite novelist of all time . . . All I ever wanted was to touch readers as powerfully as John D. MacDonald touched me. No price could be placed on the enormous pleasure that his books have given me. He captured the mood and the spirit of his times more accurately, more hauntingly, than any ‘literature’ writer—yet managed always to tell a thunderingly good, intensely suspenseful tale.”—Dean Koontz

“To diggers a thousand years from now, the works of John D. MacDonald would be a treasure on the order of the tomb of Tutankhamen.”—Kurt Vonnegut

“A master storyteller, a masterful suspense writer . . . John D. MacDonald is a shining example for all of us in the field. Talk about the best.”—Mary Higgins Clark

“A dominant influence on writers crafting the continuing series character . . . I envy the generation of readers just discovering Travis McGee, and count myself among the many readers savoring his adventures again.”—Sue Grafton

“One of the great sagas in American fiction.”—Robert B. Parker

“Most readers loved MacDonald’s work because he told a rip-roaring yarn. I loved it because he was the first modern writer to nail Florida dead-center, to capture all its languid sleaze, racy sense of promise, and breath-grabbing beauty.”—Carl Hiaasen

“The consummate pro, a master storyteller and witty observer . . . John D. MacDonald created a staggering quantity of wonderful books, each rich with characterization, suspense, and an almost intoxicating sense of place. The Travis McGee novels are among the finest works of fiction ever penned by an American author and they retain a remarkable sense of freshness.”—Jonathan Kellerman

“What a joy that these timeless and treasured novels are available again.”—Ed McBain

“Travis McGee is the last of the great knights-errant: honorable, sensual, skillful, and tough. I can’t think of anyone who has replaced him. I can’t think of anyone who would dare.”—Donald Westlake

“There’s only one thing as good as reading a John D. MacDonald novel: reading it again. A writer way ahead of his time, his Travis McGee books are as entertaining, insightful, and suspenseful today as the moment I first read them. He is the all-time master of the American mystery novel.”—John Saul

From the Publisher
When I first arrived at Ballantine, where I am the mass market managing editor, we were just undergoing a daunting task: repackaging all of John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee novels. We were giving him a brand-new, beautiful look; ingeniously, we used a deep blue color for THE DEEP BLUE GOOD-BY, a gold color for A DEADLY SHADE OF GOLD, a lavender hue for THE LONG LAVENDER LOOK, etc. But as I worked on the actual stories themselves, I realized that as colorful as these books now are on the outside, they're even more colorful on the inside. In order to prepare these books, we had to have them retyped from scratch; some of these books are so old that the plates had died, so we had nothing to print from. So all the books had to be proofread as if they were new books, and what a joy it was working on them. I unexpectedly rediscovered an author and character I knew very little about. Travis McGee is one of the great characters in crime fiction, and John D. MacDonald a fascinating storyteller. You never know what either is going to do next, or say next; what is going on in their minds is as important, if not more so, then what is going on outside Travis's boat. All of which add up to a heckuva fun series.

Mark Rifkin, Managing Editorial

From the Inside Flap
Cathy Kerr is innocence turned helpless desperation--all because of the smiling freckle-faced stranger named Junior Allen. Cathy has nowhere to turn--except to another stranger, that man named Travis McGee--who is a walking pillar of cold rage as he follows the depraved wreckage of Junior Allen's trail. 2 cassettes.

McGee makes colorful debut!
By Billy J. Hobbs
"Home is the `Busted Flush,' 52-foot barge-type houseboat, Slip F-18, Bahia Mar, Lauderdale."
Is there any address in American literature so readily identified? Probably not. It's the home of Travis McGee, "knight in tarnished armor," and central character of the over-20 volumed series by John D. MacDonald.
With quite a following of readers around the world (my first McGee was while vacationing in Torremolinas years ago and needing something to read while soaking up the Spanish sunshine and absorbing the sangria deliciosa!), MacDonald's hero, along with his sometimes bizarre assortment of friends, enemies, and hangers-on, goes from one adventure to another. Each of the McGee books contains a color in the title, easily recognizable. And it's not purple prose either! MacDonald, a best-selling novelist for years, has more than just a storyline to carry his books. Certainly, McGee is his principal concern. He's "retired" most of the time--he only goes back to work when he sees he's running out of money. He'd rather stay aboard his houseboat and entertain his friends that work. He claims he's taking his retirement one day at a time!
"The Deep Blue Good-by" is the first in this series, published in 1964. It is amazing, too, that in reading it here in the year 2000, the book still stands as relevant now as it was then. McGee, as usual, finds himself befriending and then helping out Cathy Kerr, who has come to him in desperation. Her misfortune has been to meet up with Junior Allen, "a smiling, freckle-face stranger" with depravity on his mind and a more odious person you don't want to meet. There is also something about missing inheritance. McGee is unable to resist and from the moment he accepts the challenge, the reader is glued to the pages.
MacDonald's style is terse (some would say Hemingwayesque--one of MacDonald's favorite writes, incidentally) and moves rapidly, a pace easy to keep up with but one that if you blink, you might miss something. But who wants to blink when MacDonald is on a McGee crusade! The author's knack for piercing characterization, his ability to capture the landscape and atmosphere of "Lauderdamndale," and his penchant for a good story make this first episode one not to be missed. True, the McGee books ordinarily don't have to be read in sequence, it's still a good idea. Over the course of the series, naturally, an affinity toward complete understanding of Travis, and his good friend Meyer, keeps readers truly involved.
"The Deep Blue Good-by" is a "hello" to a great series!

An Appetite Whetter
By Untouchable
This is the first of the Travis McGee books and quickly establishes why they have been so popular for so long. From the opening page the atmosphere is totally relaxed as we are welcomed aboard Travis' houseboat, The Busted Flush. Travis works only when he has to, which means, just before he runs out of money. The rest of the time he spends lazing around the Florida waters, living the good life.
He is coaxed into action by the bad-luck story of a friend of a friend and quickly and professionally gets to work coming to her rescue. On the way, he acts as a knight in shining armour to a second woman who desperately needs help, going above and beyond the call of duty, firmly entrenching him as a helluva nice guy.
This book was written almost 30 years ago, yet it is fresh enough to make one believe that it is set in today's world. It's an excellent introduction to the world of Travis McGee and has certainly whetted my appetite for more. Travis McGee is the ultimate laid back hero who carries his flaws as humbly as his talents.

Meet Travis McGee- the true definition of hard-boiled.
By Jonathan Lile (kayne@worldnet.att.net)
After reading all of John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee books, I would say that The Deep Blue Good-By is the best way to meet the greatest character of the detective-story genre. Imagine the best qualities of Hammett's Continental Detective Agency Operative and Sam Spade, Chandler's Philip Marlowe, and Cussler's Dirk Pitt combined with a unique personality that is impossible not to love. MacDonald's characterization is unmatched in almost all authors I have read, and his story-telling skills are amazing. But most impressive are his social commentaries voiced by McGee in interior monologue; nearly all the nigh-cynical observations voiced by Mcgee were true in MacDonald's time as well as ours. If you love a good story, regardless of whether or not you like mysteries, you will love this book. One word of caution, though-- once you read this, you will be hopelessly addicted to the world of Travis Mcgee.

The Landscape Painting of China: Musings of a Journeyman (Cofrin Asian Art Series), by Harrie A. Vanderstappen

“In an age when art history is too much dominated by proponents of theoretical, non-visual approaches to the works of art, really good examples of visual approaches are in short supply, and welcome. The Landscape Painting of China is a valuable visual/art-historical treatment of early Chinese painting, through the mid-seventeenth century and the Ming dynasty.”—James Cahill, author of Pictures for Use and Pleasure: Vernacular Painting in High Qing China

“Revisits the significant stylistic study of Chinese painting, which has long been overdue.”—Ling-en Lu, assistant curator of Early Chinese Art, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City

“Immediate, lively, engaging, and challenging, this work offers a tutorial in Chinese landscape painting that will guide the reader to see and understand this most subtle and expressive art form.”—Amy McNair, author of Donors of Longmen: Faith, Politics, and Patronage in Medieval Chinese Buddhist Sculpture

Chinese landscape painting is not just one of the great arts of China; it is one of the greatest products of world civilization. It has the power to transport us to another time and place and encourages us to re-think our notions of the natural world and our relationship to it.

The Landscape Painting of China: Musings of a Journeyman offers a stunning demonstration of the power of visual-based methodologies in the examination of great art. In it, Chinese landscape painting is explored from the emergence of monumental landscape painting in the ninth century through the artistic transformations of the early seventeenth century. The leading masters—everyone from Jing Hao to Dong Qichang and Chen Hongshou—and the major monuments are subjected to a searching analysis, grounded in detailed observation and a mastery of both the traditional Chinese written source material and contemporary Western, Japanese, and Chinese scholarship.

Written by the late Professor Harrie Vanderstappen, a great twentieth-century scholar of Chinese art and one of its keenest “eyes,” The Landscape Painting of China is the result of a lifetime of deep study, detailed visual analysis, and profound thinking. Father Vanderstappen had unique training: initially in Europe prior to World War II, then studying Chinese art and culture first-hand in Beijing prior to the Communist Revolution. He studied at the University of Chicago, under one of the greatest of the first generation of Asian art historians, Ludwig Bachhofer. After receiving his PhD in art history in 1955, Vanderstappen travelled to Japan, where he learned Japanese, examined Chinese paintings, and worked with many of the great postwar Japanese scholars. Upon his return to the University of Chicago in 1959, he worked as Bachhofer’s successor, teaching generations of graduate students how to see. He also published important works on Chinese painting and sculpture, as well as a comprehensive book-length bibliography of Western scholarship on Chinese art and archaeology. All of his teachings were informed by an exceptionally broad and deep knowledge of cultural and historical contexts, to which his outstanding language skills gave him access.

Filled with revelatory insights into the origin and purposes of Chinese landscape painting, this gloriously illustrated volume boasts more than 240 full-color plates, including a great many detailed images that bring Professor Vanderstappen’s detailed visual analysis to life. The graphic elements that make up the great landscape painting of China have never been made so accessible to a Western audience. In terms of its broad scope and visual analytic insight, no single-author book on Chinese painting like this has been published in many decades.

Upon his return to the University of Chicago in 1959, he worked as Bachhofer's successor, teaching generations of graduate students how to see.
Filled with revelatory insights into the origin and purposes of Chinese landscape painting, this gloriously illustrated volume boasts more than 240 full-color plates, including a great many detailed images that bring Professor Vanderstappen's detailed visual analysis to life. The graphic elements that make up the great landscape painting of China have never been made so accessible to a Western audience. In terms of its broad scope and visual analytic insight, no single-author book on Chinese painting like this has been published in many decades.

From the Back Cover
"In an age when art history is too much dominated by proponents of theoretical, non-visual approaches to the works of art, really good examples of visual approaches are in short supply, and welcome. "The Landscape Painting of China" is a valuable visual/art-historical treatment of early Chinese painting, through the mid-seventeenth century and the Ming dynasty."--James Cahill, author of "Pictures for Use and Pleasure: Vernacular Painting in High Qing China" "Revisits the significant stylistic study of Chinese painting, which has long been overdue."--Ling-en Lu, assistant curator of Early Chinese Art, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City "Immediate, lively, engaging, and challenging, this work offers a tutorial in Chinese landscape painting that will guide the reader to see and understand this most subtle and expressive art form."--Amy McNair, author of "Donors of Longmen: Faith, Politics, and Patronage in Medieval Chinese Buddhist Sculpture"

This book lives up to its name - its full of Chinese landscape paintings.

A nice book with lots of pictures of pretty paintings. Unfortunately the photos are dark and downright dreary. I wish they had lightened them a little as they printed them.

A finely written academic study of comedy in four fields.
By A Customer
The Labyrinth of the Comic is a finely written academic study of the meanings of comedy and the comic in literature, philosophy, psychology, and psychoanalysis, from the middle eighteenth century to the early twentieth. It is published by a university press and aimed primarily at academic audiences: for students and teachers at the college level. If you are interested in how comedy has been understood and interpreted between Henry Fielding's Joseph Andrews and Tom Jones in the mid eighteenth century, and Sigmund Freud's Jokes and their Relation to the Unconscious in the early 20th century, you should find the book interesting and helpful. The book also considers William Makepeace Thackeray, Soren Kierkegaard, the rise of experimental psychology, and George Meredith.

Great book!
By M. Vasta
This book is a great contribution to the field of Mesoamerican studies. When I ordered it I wasn't sure what to expect, but I have really enjoyed it. The interdisciplinary approach allows for a thorough examination of the role of cacao in the cultural life of indigenous Mesoamericans, past and present. I appreciated the diachronic examination of the subject as it allows the reader to better understand how cacao was and is culturally important to Mesoamericans. Additionally, it demonstrates how this seed become significant to the colonial economy as well as the larger world market. The history of cacao's Native American origins is fascinating. Cacao or chocolate has become an important part of many cultures foodways however its Native American origins are largely overlooked in its contemporary context. McNeil's compilation of current scholarly research about cacao nicely demonstrates the origin and development of this Native American resource.

Chocolate in Mesoamerica: A Cultural History of Cacao
By John E. Staller
Chocolate in Mesoamerica: A Cultural History of Cacao, 2006., edited by Cameron L. McNeil, Gainesville: University Press of Florida (ISBN 0-8130-2953-8) represents the most comprehensive study of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) published to date. The breadth and scope of this important reference source is impressive. Contributions include research and analysis involving various methodological approaches, anthropology, archaeology, art history, conservation biology, and epigraphy, to explore the role of cacao in ancient and contemporary Mesoamerica and its origins as a domesticate. Scholars from a variety of fields provide new evidence on the domestication of cacao, its ancient use in foods other than beverages, its significance in Mesoamerican religion, and its role in elite feasts. Contributors also discuss: the value of cacao; the artistic conventions concerning cacao and its use; and the archaeological identification of cacao, including the recovery of seeds in archaeological context, residue analysis from ancient ceramics, and the hieroglyphic markings on ancient ceramic containers. These studies pose various questions such as: where beverages made from cacao pulp or only the seeds? Was cacao associated with the ancient elite and consumed primarily as a beverage? Was cacao widely available to individuals and societies of non-elite status? Some researchers study current religious practices involving cacao, especially in Mexico and Guatemala, in order to determine if these practices may provide clues to ancient associations of this plant.
The volume Chocolate in Mesoamerica: A Cultural History of Cacao is divided into four parts: Part I explores the origins of cacao, how was it domesticated, its chemical properties, it biogeography and identification of and its close relatives in other regions of the Neotropics. In Part II, archaeologists, art historians, linguists, and epigraphers document the pre-Columbian uses and importance of cacao how it was consumed and by whom, a truly multidisciplinary perspective. Some contributions explore how cacao became interwoven with later Spanish diet and culture, eventually spreading into the cuisines of most of Europe and the rest of the world. In Part III, ethnohistorians and archaeologists sixteenth-century documents to provide an understanding of the role of the colonial Spanish governments in altering the cultivation practices and consumption of cacao among indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica. Some contributors document the incorporation of cacao into Spanish cuisine. In Part IV, archaeologists, ethnobotanists, and ethnographers record the many uses of cacao and how its continued to be cultivated by Mesoamerican communities in the present. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of Chocolate and its role in the foodways of the world, and to students and scholars focused upon its Pre-Columbian past and how remnants of this history continue to the present.

This volume includes papers by a number of experts on chocolate and Mesoamerica. The chapters are well written and form the most complete coverage of this domesticate in a single volume. The papers consider cacao from multiple perspectives including botany, iconography, ritual, politics, and economy. They also cover a broad geographic area including a number of pre-Columbian and modern cultural groups in Mesoamerica.

The Dreadful Lemon Sky: A Travis McGee Novel, by John D. MacDonald

From a beloved master of crime fiction, The Dreadful Lemon Sky is one of many classic novels featuring Travis McGee, the hard-boiled detective who lives on a houseboat.

Around four in the morning, Travis McGee is jarred awake by a breathless ghost from his past: an old flame who needs a place to stash a package full of cash. What’s in it for McGee? Ten grand and no questions asked. Two weeks later, she’s dead.

“The Travis McGee novels are among the finest works of fiction ever penned by an American author.”—Jonathan Kellerman

Carolyn Milligan was only aboard McGee’s boat for one night. She came to drop off a hundred grand for safekeeping. What Carrie really needed was someone to keep her safe. She said she’d be back in a month. Instead Carrie is killed in a dubious roadside accident. Now McGee is left with a fortune—and a nagging conscience.

So McGee takes a trip to the seedy little town of Bayside, Florida, to look into Carrie’s life before she showed up on his boat. What McGee finds only pushes him further into the corrupt world of drugs and blood that Carrie was trying to escape. McGee is used to high stakes, but when the bodies start piling up, even he may be in over his head.

From the Inside Flap
"The professional's professional of suspense writers."

THE NEW YORK TIMES

Travis McGee has been offered easy money by a longtime lady friend. But when she gets killed, McGee's got a boatload of mystery. Navigating his boat into troubled waters, he heads for the seamier side of Florida--where drug dealing, twisted sex, and corruption are easy to find--but murderous riddles are hard to solve....

About the Author
John D. MacDonald was an American novelist and short-story writer. His works include the Travis McGee series and the novel The Executioners, which was adapted into the film Cape Fear. In 1962 MacDonald was named a Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America; in 1980, he won a National Book Award. In print he delighted in smashing the bad guys, deflating the pompous, and exposing the venal. In life, he was a truly empathetic man; his friends, family, and colleagues found him to be loyal, generous, and practical. In business, he was fastidiously ethical. About being a writer, he once expressed with gleeful astonishment, “They pay me to do this! They don’t realize, I would pay them.” He spent the later part of his life in Florida with his wife and son. He died in 1986.

A great introduction to the legendary Travis McGee series.
By A Customer
This happened to be the first novel of the Travis McGee series I read, back in the 80's, and I was instantly hooked. I grew up in Florida, and McDonald, as every reader familiar with Florida notices, knew the state intimately and paints that strange place with a master's touch. Travis McGee is probably the most perfectly realized character in series fiction, but what really grabbed me about this novel was the ultra-frightening villain. In fact, I think McDonald's greatest talent was the invention and development of his horrifying bad guys.

Lucky 13th for Travis

"Dreadful Lemon Sky," MacDonald's 13th in the Travis McGee series, is vintage McGee. I would put it right up there with the best of them, "Green Ripper" and "Bright Orange Shroud." It boggles my mind that MacDonald could write the abominable loser "Turquoise Lament" in 1973, and turn around and write this sparkling gem in 1974.
Carrie, a blast from the past, pays McGee a surprise visit aboard the Busted Flush with a suitcase full of suspicious money. She asks him to keep it safe for her, keep a $10,000 "fee," and if she does not return for it in two weeks, send it to her sister. Two weeks later and no Carrie; McGee goes out to earn his fee. Carrie has died in a car "accident." McGee mounts his white horse and vows vengeance for the lady. He finds drugs, danger, more action than even he bargained for, and meets a load of fascinating (if not righteous) characters. He discovers an all too happy singles only apartment complex apparently fueled by marijuana and presided over by a Big Daddy who is the benevolent landlord. A mysterious newly widowed Cindy Birdsong plays his Bond girl role, if somewhat diffidently. The locale is all Florida, purely Florida.
"Dreadful Lemon Sky" is superbly plotted with a surprising number of twists and turns for a MacDonald book. The character vignettes are sharp and right on the money. This is a Travis McGee not to be missed.

Murder of an Old Friend Begins the Story
By Toni V. Sweeney
A friend of Travis McGee appears in the middle of the night, asking him to keep a package for her and if she doesn't return for it, to make certain her sister gets it. The package contains a sum of money, a portion of which McGee is given for this favor. A short time later, the friend dies in an auto accident. McGee goes to the funeral intending to carry out his promise, asks the wrong questions and becomes convinced the friend was murdered.

Thus he and we, the readers, are catapulted into a tale of drug smuggling, murder, a serial rapist, and the inevitable hand-to-hand combat with the killer, in this case involving a jeep, a backhoe, and a dead horse. While the villains McGee meets are egotistical and not easily brought down, the women are also some of the toughest and usually just as wicked and cold-blooded as the men in what they want and what they'll do to get it...no sweet simpering ladies here.

Through it all McGee's world-weary and philosophical first person POV narrative brings to us the beauty and the ugliness existing around him as seen from his boat the Busted Flush. Travis McGee is a man wanting to withdraw from the world but is forever being pulled back into it by the people he calls friends, whether they are actually so, merely acquaintances for whom he has a certain emotional connection or the true kind with whom one somehow loses touch. He doesn't want to get involved, but he does for them because they need him. There is violence but it's described in a way being almost bemused, even when McGee barely comes out of it unscarred. This is one hero who never escapes unscathed. As with his sexual encounters, there's always an apartness, as if he's withholding part of himself. There is sex but it's described so poetically one can't actually be certain it has happened or is merely in the McGee's mind, as he dissects it and his emotions concerning it. He's a man who loves, within limits, not cold or predatory, but reserving wholehearted commitment, never giving that last bit which will completely fulfill. It's as if he's waiting for the one person who will provide the spark to melt the barrier he's put around his own life and give him the final excuse to enter our world again.

The ending is another bittersweet McDonald ending but as usual, it pulls the reader back to look for another Travis McGee story.
