Suzanne Farrell, world-renowned ballerina, was one of George Balanchine's most celebrated muses and remains a legendary figure in the ballet world. This memoir, first published in 1990 and reissued with a new preface by the author, recounts Farrell's transformation from a young girl in Ohio dreaming of greatness to the realization of that dream on stages all over the world. Central to this transformation was her relationship with George Balanchine, who invited her to join the New York City Ballet in the fall of 1961 and was in turn inspired by her unique combination of musical, physical, and dramatic gifts. He created masterpieces for her in which the limits of ballet technique were expanded to a degree not seen before. By the time she retired from the stage in 1989, Farrell had achieved a career that is without precedent in the history of ballet. One third of her repertory of more than 100 ballets were composed expressly for her by such notable choreographers as Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Maurice Bejart. Farrell recalls professional and personal attachments and their attendant controversies with a down-to-earth frankness and common sense that complements the glories and mysteries of her artistic achievement.

Suzanne Farrell has staged Balanchine’s ballets in New York, Boston, Seattle, and Miami and for the Vienna Opera Ballet, the Kirov, and the Bolshoi. She is the subject of an Academy Award nominated documentary, Suzanne Farrell--Elusive Muse. A professor of dance at Florida State University in Tallahassee, she also teaches a summer ballet course at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. In the fall of 2000, the Suzanne Farrell Ballet was launched as an ongoing partnership with the Kennedy Center.

Farrell, for years the chief muse of New York City Ballet cofounder and master choreographer George Balanchine, has led an extraordinary, frequently controversial life. Here with former NYCB dancer Bentley, she tells of it with humility, integrity, wit and sophistication. Farrell's is first of all a classically American story of a self-made woman: growing up a tomboy and a dance student in a broken home in Cincinnati, Ohio, she struck out at 15 for Manhattan with her mother and sisters on the chance that she might be accepted into the famed School of American Ballet. Discovered, aesthetically molded and eventually wooed by Russian-born Balanchine, she left NYCB in 1969 after it became apparent that her husband, dancer Paul Mejia, could have no career there so long as Mr. B.'s jealous moods prevailed. Farrell returned to the company in 1974 and retired in 1989 at the age of 44, one of the century's greatest ballerinas. As Balanchine's muse and center of his attentions, she collaborated with him in the creation of his most enduring ballets. Though she could not reciprocate in kind when he fell in love with her, she speaks with real feeling of their mutual devotion, which found its physical consummation in their work together at the ballet studio and in her performances for him onstage. Dance and life

Dance part of the book- great!

Life part- a bit disturbing. Balanchine was a great manipulator. I find it interesting that she didn't think Balanchine needed to apologize for pursuing her. How can you just accept the fact that a much older, married man, made you feel guilty for not having an exclusive relationship with him, to the point of driving away a man you love? And then banishing you for daring to get married?? The personal stuff, just screams emotional abuse to me, and she seems to justify it all. It left me feeling sad that she had to deal with a man like that in order to have a dance career.

But again, the dance parts were a great read.

Very special.... you'll be touched by this story

I stumbled across this book by accident almost a year ago and have been touched by it ever since. I'm not sure that I can explain the specialness of this of this story but it feels like a real life fairy tale. You can feel Ms. Farrell's emotions and passion of what it must have been like for her to work with her teacher, George Balanchine. What a dynamic duo they must have been together. I would recommend this book to everyone, whether you have been exposed to ballet or not, as a special glimpse into a very public but very private life. Truly a lovely story.

I have the older version!

First, I have the 1990 version of her autobiography. While it is interested, a lot has happened to Suzanne Farrell since 1990. She was awarded the National Medal of the Arts and inducted as one of the five Kennedy Center Honors in Washington D.C. Suzanne Farrell is a classically trained ballerina who has become a force in American ballet. Her relationship with George Ballanchine is fascinating. She was one of his beloved muses.

At 15 years old, she moved with her divorced mother and sister to New York City to attend the prestigious ballet school founded by George Ballanchine. Her life would never be the same. While reading her autobiography, I found her intriguing and likable and approachable. She's not famous enough to be mobbed unless you are in the ballet world.

Even then, Suzanne Farrell is quite generous and kind to her svengali, George Balanchine. They had an unusual relationship. She probably considered him more as the surrogate father figure than a possible lover. George was not only enamored with the youthful Suzanne but quite possessive of her. The relationship between George and Suzanne is both fascinating and disturbing maybe because of the age difference or his five marriages. Suzanne was a bit naive but she was capable of knowing George's feelings towards her than the other dancers in the company. Still it's quite a powerful read and Suzanne's rebellion and independence is quite interesting particularly her relationship with George or Mr. B. as she refers him in the book.

No matter what happened in this complex relationship, she is rather a kind individual with a generous heart and soul and a conscience. Her relationship with George was complicated, let's just leave it to that.

This book is also a dance history book of the ballet rise in America as well. Suzanne Farrell chronicles the difficulties of being a ballerina even one of the most successful. She's not drowning in money. Rather, she lives a lot more modestly. Of dance, ballet is a passionate career filled with sacrifices, pain, stress, and competition. Ballerinas like Suzanne must always look the part. Of course, the dances have choreographed moves like actors learning Shakespearean lines in iambic pentameter. She writes about the being a dancer in today's world.

I went to the ballet at Lincoln Center months ago and how many people go to the ballet, opera, or symphony. Not many as they would like to fit those seats. Ballet is the source of many great Russian figure skaters and even Torvill and Dean. The ballet is to dance like Shakespeare to theatre and opera to music.

I worry about the future of ballet, opera, and theatre in our society. We seem to have lost a greater need to be entertained in our theatres. In fact, we are losing in the arts world. The arts world can't compete with today's technology but we don't need it too. We need to have the ballet, opera, and theatre to be both entertained and enlightened in our lives.

Wonderful Catalogue

I live in Gainesville, FL and can visit the Harn Museum of Art often. This catalogue is the beautiful result of the hard work done by the staff and is a much deserved reward for the past 20 years of collecting. The museum has developed into one of the leading University Museums in the country: it serves the academic body, as well as the community at large, with consistently engaging exhibitions and collections.

The full color, numerous photographs are amazing. Full views and details are mixed together, creating an undulating experience of overall appreciation and intricate examination.

One of the things that make this catalogue unique among museum publications is the content of the last few chapters of the book. Essays addressing conservation, the growing relationship between art, art history, and technology, museum education, and public relations; visitors are given a behind-the-scenes look at the aspects of the museum that we pay little attention to. As visitors of the museum, certainly we notice objects out for conservation, look at the x-ray now posted next to an art object, attend a lecture or family activity, or read the museum newsletter; but the complexity of what is implied is rarely contemplated. Though Timucua speakers flourished in northeast Florida and southeast Georgia, no other historically accurate book about them exists for elementary and middle-school readers.

Kelley G. Weitzel is the senior preserve naturalist at the E. Dale Joyner Nature Preserve at Pelotes Island in Jacksonville, Florida. She has taught workshops and seminars about Florida's environment and its Native Americans for seven years and is currently working on a children's novel about the Timucua culture.

Exceeded my expectations -- a great book!

What a fun way to teach history! There is a lot of detailed information presented in a kid-friendly way. My son learned a lot and he was able to go through this whole book by himself, answering the questions as he went. (There is an answer key in the back that I took out and kept for myself.) I let him write in the book because I thought that would be nicer for him, but of course one could photocopy the pictures that are supposed to be colored and use notebook paper for the rest. But this way he has a nice keepsake. We went and looked at some Timucua sites shortly after he finished which was helped bring the book to life, but was not really necessary because the drawings are clear and detailed.

Educational and fun at the same time

I have always believed that learning can be fun. The Timucua Indians : A Native American Detective Story is a perfect example of educating young people without them knowing it. This book explores the Timucua natural environment from a childs perspective. The page by page activities makes reading this story fun. My 10 year old daughter loves these types of books. I am glad we found this one. We are from Jacksonville, Florida and the book has opened her eyes to a culture that existed long before we ever did and now, hopefully won't be forgotten.

Sound research, unfortunate title

While this book, which is the end-product of a dissertation by Dr. Evans, rightly explores how Ruby McCollum was silenced from speaking to the press during her trial, it's title has been used recently in two documentaries on the story to imply, and even state, that McCollum did not testify at her trial. This is revisionist history. McCollum actually did testify at her trial, which readers can see in State of Florida vs. Ruby McCollum, Defendant and in Zora Hurston and the Strange Case of Ruby McCollum.

Further, there was far more concern in the community at the time, as I recall from being there, that IRS would prosecute many members of the community on multiple counts of racketeering and tax evasion. It was far more important to hush Ruby up for this reason than for an affair that was already making the gossip circuits of the day.

Actually, I see Ruby McCollum as a very brave woman who took the stand to testify against a white man who forced her to have his child. This testimony was not silenced, in spite of rapid-fire objections from the prosecutor, sustained by the judge.

So while Dr. Evans is absolutely on solid ground in seeing silence as a metaphor, it was certainly a highly ineffective weapon in silencing the roar of Ruby McCollum, heard across decades, documented in multiple books and film documentaries, and used as a precedent in many similar cases, making this a landmark trial for its voice, not its silence.

Can we take the truth?

The book tells the story of Mrs. McCollum in a non-fictionalized way. Ms. Evans gives us facts-- as hard as they are to read. This would make a good textbook for so many areas of study. The idea of silence as an action (especially here in the South) is to me a valid and firm point. I have seen it all around me. As one who grew up in the time (and place), I am forever looking for an end to the silence. Time is not the answer, education and validation is.

I could not put it down

This book took me by surprise. I started reading it on a Thursday night, commented to myself that I might not finish it because I generally can't read an entire book seemingly written in jest.*

On the next day, I continued reading while eating breakfast, didn't put away the dishes, and continued reading all day, putting everything else aside, until I was done.

I laughed and I cried. I cried throughout the last chapter and until I went to sleep.

Is that enough of a review? Perhaps.

A good book touches the reader. A good book either tells the reader something they do not know, or tells them something about themselves, or both.

*Ah, but then I realized this jest is not the snarky humor of many books these days. This humor is familiar and familial, and why? This book struck me to my core. Mr. Shteyngart and I have a few things in common, but they must run deep. I'm a fourth generation American Jew, but the humor and pathos at the heart of this book came so alive to me that I forgot my age, my gender, and that I didn't spend my first seven years in the Soviet Union. The cadence of the cutting remarks, the combination of suffocating love and open hostility, the expectations of both failure and great success. . .oh it was so achingly and heart breakingly familiar. I haven't the words to explain just what happened here as I read. I am not a writer, only an average reviewer. I thank Mr. Shteyngart for his words, bringing a pitch perfect rendering of coming of age in New York to life. I know no other honorific as fitting here as the Yiddish word mensch.

Little Failure: Poignant and Powerful

Having read two of Gary Shteyngart's three novels I am not surprised I liked his memoir. I am surprised though how much and how it resonated. The author's early writing reminds me of Henry Fielding's Tom Jones: raucous, and frenetic picaresque romps that excoriate cultural mores, social climbers as well as well as politics and power of all persuasions. Therefore it was with some trepidation I approached Little Failure. It is one thing to skewer the Russian mob, start-ups or upstart pretension; quite another to skewer mom and dad, without seeming to be an ungrateful Ahole. Happily, his memoir works really well. Shteyngart manages to be funny,poignant and unfailingly honest about his parents' and his own failings and importantly, their struggle together.

It would seem hard to raise a son more neurotic or disfunctional than that quintessential Jewish neurotic New Yorker, Woody Allen. Yet Mom and Pop Shtenyngart do so and then some. The recipe for their dubious success reads something like this: start with a son whose gut-wrenching asthma exacerbates your very worst fears for your only child. Toss in a heart-wrenching and culturally dislocating emigration that make you strangers in a strange land, and oh, yeah leave behind most of your mother's family. It is amidst this backdrop that the author recounts hilarious and painful memories: learning English but keeping Russian, attending Hebrew School but sort of despising it, having an accent then not, being a minority, but hating other minorities, and finally having parents who both adore and abuse you.

These two extremes are the crux or the heart of what's the matter in Little Failure. At one end of the gamut are parents who clearly love you. At the other is a father who smacks you around fairly regularly to vent his frustrations and failures. More complex is a mother who charges you for the chicken cutlets you eat, the lamps you break or refuses to speak to you for days and weeks when you disappoint or rebel. Plus you take on the role of mediator in their own unhappy marriage. What saves it from feeling as bad as it probably was is Shteyngart's compassion and his own very real affection for these difficult and damaged people.

The author understands that broken people can't help but raise broken children. When half your family is decimated by Hitler and the other half by Stalin, when you just escaped the Siege of Leningrad to later flee the USSR and start over at 40, life has been stacked up against you in formidable, essential ways. Shteyngart's clear-eyed look at his and his parents' experience and struggles is always tempered with this understanding and forgiveness. It seems not only authentically felt but deserved. That is why, long after the laughter has faded--and there is much to laugh at in Little Failure--what resonates is the abiding affection of this crazy, bizarre mishpucha.

Gary's Traumatized Life

I began this memoir and then began again. I couldn't understand what all the hype was about--first thinking that the author was a not- so- funny sterotypical Jew or maybe just a stand-up comedian. I see how wrong I intitially was!!

This memoir morphs into almost greatness!! Really. But, you have to get through the standard expected stuff to find the pony. ( From the old joke that "With all this s..t there has to be a pony in here somewhere.") The trenchant writing doesn't begin until Gary is almost in college half way through the book.

The author had an ostensibly ordinary immigrant life. Yes, the feelings of being an outsider magnified by being a Russian- not the most loved group in America of the eighties- are isolating. Yes, having parents who are cheap and don't "get" America is isolating. Yes, being an only child is tough-- with both parents stuggling workaholics-- and is further isolating. And on and on.. BUT, the clincher is that Gary's Father beat him consistently; and his Mother just stood by, ineffectual -- isolating him more. The only love Gary remembers from this time ( his childhood) is the "touch" of beatings. At least, he was being touched, he thinks.

The best part of this memoir details how the budding author used and abused people-- only caring for himself in the short run, abusing drugs and drink to the max, not being able to make a real connection, not able to love or be loved. Only desperately wanting love and not knowing what that is.

Receiving a lot of psychiatric help was his salvation. Finding true mentors ( Chang Rae Lee was one )and friends helped. Connecting with his flawed parents and with his genes helped. He's still mixed up, of course, but certainly more understanding of others and himself.

And, he's a very good writer! The words fly off the pages from his college years on-- into our hearts.

Morris is the first writer to have exclusive access to the papers of Clare Booth Luce, and it shows in this authoritative and compelling biography. Luce, the illegitimate daughter of a social climber, was programmed to marry money. She did so, but her husband was a drunk and a disappointment, and she came out of the marriage with one daughter and a desire to live for no one but herself. She succeeded rather well, eventually becoming the editor of Vanity Faira job she claimed after the death of the previous editor, also her former lover, who may have committed suicide after their breakup. Luce also had a burgeoning career as a playwright, and with the premier of The Women, found a permanent niche in the theater. Still, it was when she married Henry Luce, owner of Time, Inc., that she reached a different strata of society and found herself in the middle of every important event from the late '30s on--much of which became fodder for anecdotes, like the time Clare didn't want to leave the Ritz just because the Germans were marching into town. "How do you know they are coming?" she asked the concierge. "Because they have reservations," he replied. Though obviously deeply involved with her subject, Morris nevertheless sees Luce clearly: a bright, vain, hardworking but mildly talented writer whose greatest creation was herself and her amazing life. 100 Percent Engaging

This is simply a wonderfully entertaining, well-researched, and delightful read. The author has done a tremendous job fleshing out the multifaceted career and personality of the complex Clare Boothe Luce, showing us what an exceptionally driven individual she is. One cannot help conclude that a childhood really does have enormous influence upon the adult, and Luce's drama-filled and chaotic background will resonate with all those who have had similar dysfunctional upbringings. The book draws almost by accident the remarkable similarity between mother and daughter: in a nutshell, Clare could not have become who she was without her mother, Ann, in her own right an extraordinary woman. I would recommend this book to all readers, but especially female readers, for its beautifully delineated outline of what one woman is capable of achieving.

Engrossing Read

I just finished reading this excellent book and unfortunately didn't realize it was only part of her life. I don't see the second biography for sale. Does anyone know if the author has finished the second biography yet? I am feeling frustrated as I finished half her life and now am eager to continue the rest of it! That is the mark of a good book to me when I can't wait to read more about the subject. Fascinating. Intriguing! I didn't know much about her before and I cannot say I would have enjoyed knowing her since she does seem a bit cold but she accomplished alot and I have always loved "The Women"...I think it is great to see what she did with her life and inspiring!
