About the Author
Sampson Davis was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey. He is a board certified emergency medicine physician and author of the New York Times bestsellers The Pact, We Beat the Street, and The Bond. He is the youngest physician to receive the National Medical Association’s highest honor, the Scroll of Merit. He is a recipient of Essence and BET humanitarian awards and was named by Essence as one of the forty most inspirational African Americans. He is a founder of the Three Doctors Foundation and practices medicine in New Jersey.

Gritty, Uplifting, and Informative Tale Of A Doctor At An Inner City Hospital

"Living and Dying in Brick City" is an eye-opening book by Dr. Sampson Davis, previously best known for co-writing "The Pact." In "The Pact," Dr. Davis described the bond that he made with two other kids with whom he grew up in the inner city. They decided that they would all rise out of their difficult surroundings and become physicians, and all three have lived up to that promise. In "Living and Dying" Dr. Davis returns back home to Newark as an Emergency Room attending physician, where he works in Beth Israel Hospital, a tough inner city hospital that sees its share of drama and tragedies. He tells the gritty and affecting stories of many of his memorable patients. Their stories are at times uplifting and at times sad reminders of how our society sometimes fails its least fortunate.

One fascinating story involved a young man who arrived in the ER with critical gunshot wounds. He was transported to the ICU where he died. Dr. Davis recognized his name on the patient list as a kid who accompanied him when they committed an armed robbery at the age of 17. Unlike Dr. Davis, who went on to success as a physician, this young man went in a completely different direction. It's stories like these that make one realize the small forks in the road that can determine our lives.

Unlike most other medical memoirs, this book also gives practical advice to people who are trapped in the difficult situations of many of the patients in his stories. It's a wake-up call for people to learn about the difficulties and failings of health care in major urban settings. I really enjoyed it.

This book is the latest in what I consider a recent renaissance of medical memoirs.
Twelve Patients by Dr. Eric Manheimer tells the stories of patients at the famed Bellevue Hospital, written by the former medical director there. The author pulls no punches in describing these affecting and often unusual patients in sometimes terrifying detail. Very recommended.

A must read.

This book can hold its own against any other similar example of medical drama, a genre very popular in print and television. If that was all it was, it would make for an exciting reading experience, but then disappear down the rabbit hole of memory. There is, however, much more to the book, which makes it truly unforgettable. The book is divided into thematic chapters with cryptic titles such as "Love Hurts" and "The Fish Bowl", that leave one guessing what they might signify. Each chapter uses actual cases that Dr Davis has encountered in training or in practice, but supplements the narrative with commentary on public health and social issues as well as personal biographical references. These three elements blend seamlessly and skillfully into each other effortlessly moving between them and yet creating a cohesive unit defining a specific problem. The descriptions of the medical cases are exciting, with all the drama encountered in an emergency room setting. The public health issues and problems are usually clearly defined and backed by statistical data that are sometimes alarming. The most gripping portion of each chapter, however is the biographical linking of the episodes and situations to the author by references to his personal story. This is the most poignant and heartwarming aspect of every chapter. Very few persons, if any, describing such events can really say "Been There, or Done That." A constant theme is "Look at me now. If I can do it, so can You."

Another unique aspect of the book is the listing of helpful information pertaining to the chapter immediately after it. Purists might balk at this unorthodox approach, arguing that such material should be relegated to the back of the book along with the citations and acknowledgements. This however, is Emergency Medicine where the need to act is acute, and one does not push off things to the end. If someone really needs to use the information listed, he has most likely made a great effort to even read the chapter and needs the information readily at hand. Other chapters may not be pertinent to him and it is unfair to make him rummage through the back of the book to search for what he may need. Furthermore, these sections are clearly demarcated by a different font and one can easily move to the next chapter without losing the narrative. If one however decides to linger over the material, there is good stuff in there even for the jaded professional.

This book should be required reading as part of all Medical School Curricula or in any form of training associated with the Health Profession. In these days of Impersonal Medicine fuelled by avarice and a push by most medical students towards the most lucrative specialities, it may be important to be reminded, that unlike many professions, the practice of Medicine is really about helping others.

If you live in an area of the country similar to Newark, and there are many such areas in Urban America, this book may help you deal with your problems. It may offer you some hope, realizing that there may be a way out, and there are resources you can turn to for help.

If you live anywhere else, you will learn about a part of the country you probably had no idea existed. It will give you something to think about when you are forced to make a detour through an area you would never venture into. It may even inspire you to want to do something about the problem. The costs of urban neglect are astronomical and are borne by the community at large, and so it makes good economic sense to do something about it.

This book will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will make you sad. It will make you mad. It will however warm your heart and perhaps inspire you. Every penny of the $25 dollars ( Much less if you get the book on Amazon) you invest, (not spend) will return more than you paid.

The way a doctor should be!

I agree whole-heartedly that its important to care and to let people know you care. Dr. Davis speaks the way he lives ... all the way. I have recommended this book to my daughter who lives her life in a similar way. I hope a lot of people read this inspiring book.

For the yeoman work done by the author in cataloging the grave monuments of English and American sailors; and for the powerful and moving stories behind them: five stars.

For the author's dry, academic style: three stars.

The book is based on the author's doctoral dissertation, which can be found on-line. Look it up for a sample, and for color photos of the monuments. The book only has black and white illustrations.

The book is too pricey and academic for a lay shelf. It is worth finding in the library if you are interested in English and American folklore and sailors of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Chapter 1

Boston, Massachusetts

* Overview: White people in Boston are very proud of their blue-collar roots. However, for many of them, two generations is as close as they will ever get to a job requiring manual labor. This also extends to the many Bostonians who will still send their white children to public school, provided that public school is Boston Latin. Boston is also home to three alternative newsweeklies that provide many young writers with jobs that don't pay enough to make rent. The Boston white person can also be found throughout rural New England, but this breed is special, having cast off the shackles of the workaday world to begin a small organic microbrewery, creamery, or farm.

* Strengths: Mayflower relatives give them low-numbered license plates; can hold liquor.

* Weaknesses: Baseball-induced depression; movies about Irish gangsters.

* Secret Shame: They don't really like the Dropkick Murphys.



Ivy League

The Ivy League is expensive, exclusive, and located in the Northeast and has campuses featuring beautiful, actual ivy-covered buildings. All these things are beloved by white people, so logically it would seem that they all love the Ivy League. But this is not true!

White people have a tortured relationship with the Ivy League, and if you broach the subject in the wrong way you can offend and even anger a white person.

But before getting into the more nuanced aspects of the subject, it's important to know that all white people believe they are intelligent enough and have the work ethic required to attend an Ivy League school. The only reason they did not actually attend one is that they chose not to participate in the "dog and pony show" required to gain acceptance. White people also like to believe that they were not born into a privileged (enough) family for the coveted legacy admission. This should always be at the back of your mind as you discuss the Ivy League with a white person.

Once you have determined that a white person did not attend an Ivy League school, you should try to give them the opportunity to explain why their school was actually a superior educational experience. Some easy ways to do this: mention grade inflation, professors who value research over teaching, or high tuition costs. Any one of these will set a white person off on a multiminute rant.

When they have reached the end of their defense about why they chose the "right" school, you should say, "I knew a whole bunch of people who went to Harvard and none of them work as hard or are as smart as you." This is a very effective technique for gaining acceptance among white people, since they need constant reassurance that they are smart and that they made the right choice with their life.

If you actually attended an Ivy League school, you will be seen as a threat, so prepare for a lot of questions from white people. They will constantly ask about how much work you had, the type of students at the school, the professors, your dorm room, and your reading lists, and they will try so hard to figure out your SAT score. They desperately need a source of comparison so that they can determine if you are actually smarter than them. In fact, the only way to stop this line of questioning is to imply that you only got in because of your minority status. Once you say that, white people will stop feeling threatened, since they can now believe they too would have been accepted to an Ivy League school if they were a minority. It also gives them a personal story about the effectiveness of affirmative action.

White people also like to call their school "the Harvard of the [insert region or athletic conference]." Do not challenge this; it will ruin their confidence.


Conan O'Brien

The news that Conan O'Brien would be replaced by Jay Leno caused white people to erupt with rage and hostility. You might have expected them to lash out and do something about it, like take to the streets or write letters to NBC to voice their dissatisfaction with the network. But no, white people solved this problem the way that they solved the election crisis in Iran: through Facebook and Twitter updates. In 2009, millions of white people took thirty-five seconds to turn their Twitter profiles green, and consequently sent a very powerful message to the leaders of Iran. Their message was that they wanted their friends to know that they would stop at nothing to ensure freedom and democracy for the Iranian people. Thanks in large part to that effort, Iran is now a functioning democratic paradise (as far as white people know). With that issue settled, white people launched a similar campaign for Conan that is sure to have similar results.

It is not hard to understand why white people love Conan O'Brien. He embodies so many of the things they already like: Ivy League schools, Red Hair, the Boston Red Sox, Self-Deprecating Humor, The Simpsons, and Bad Memories of High School (likely, but not confirmed). Seeing him on TV five nights a week gives white people who still have televisions a comforting sense of community.

If your plan is to try to use Conan O'Brien as a way to get white people to become more interested in you, then it is imperative that you understand a few key rules. First, all white people love "the Masturbating Bear." If you don't know what this is, do not worry. Just proclaim your love for the character, and the white person you are talking to will simply fill in the rest. Second, all white people believe that Andy Richter never should have left the show in the first place. And finally, you should do your best to develop a "Triumph the Insult Comic Dog" impression. All white people already have one, so you might as well try to fit in. Complete these steps and watch your friendship with white people become considerably smoother.

Now, the biggest and most important thing to remember is to never, under any circumstance, bring up a Conan O'Brien sketch or joke that has taken place in the last five years. You will be met with only blank stares. For you see, while white people will fiercely support Conan O'Brien in any public forum, they always fail to support him in the only way that actually helps-by watching his show.

Note: Under no circumstance should you ever mention that you prefer Jay Leno. This might cause white people to think you have the same taste in humor as the wrong kind of white people, or worse, their parents.


Single-Malt Scotch

There is no getting around the subject: white people love alcohol. From their refined tastes in French wine to their fervent consumption of Maine's microbrews, booze makes up a very important part of white culture. But many white people soon realize there are only so many beers that one can drink, and that being an expert on wine is almost impossible. Currently the most realistic way for a white person to look like a wine expert is to look at a restaurant's wine list and then promptly order a bottle of a cheap-but not the cheapest-bottle on the menu. Advanced white people will pretend they recognize and enjoy this moderately priced bottle of wine.

With beer snobbery mastered and wine snobbery all but abandoned, white people were forced to try to find a new alcohol for snobbery. The process of elimination is a fairly simple procedure. First, any alcohol that's mentioned by a rapper is immediately cast aside. Not just brands, but the alcohol itself. This is not because white people have any prejudice against rappers. Quite the opposite, in fact: their prejudice is simply against other white people who do what rappers tell them.

Increased sales of Grey Goose, Patrón, Hennessy, and Cristal have effectively erased any real opportunity for white people to participate in snobbery about each respective beverage. To a white person there could be no greater shame than waiting in line at a liquor store and having a twenty-year-old frat boy say to them:

"Oh what? You're on that 'yak too?"

"This is a Hine Triomphe, perhaps the world's finest-"

"I'm on that Hennessy!"

Even the possibility of this exchange has sent white people, especially white men, scrambling for an alcoholic beverage to set them apart from these wrong kinds of white people. What they found was single-malt scotch.

It has everything a white person could want. It's got European heritage, it's expensive, college-age white people avoid it, and perhaps most important, crotchety old white men love it. The latter point is especially important, since you should understand that white people, for whatever reason, are generally inclined to like or force themselves to like anything that angry, intelligent, old white men enjoy: sweaters, jazz, things made from wood, books, records, and complaining about how everything is terrible now.


Complaining About the Death of Print Media

White people are expert complainers. Witness the events that transpire after they are served a dish they didn't order in a restaurant. But that type of complaining is done by all people. No, what white people are best at is complaining without being willing to actually do anything about the problem; see Conan O'Brien, Iran, Oil Spills, Air Pollution, Tuna Depletion, and any problem that would require them to make a sacrifice of time, money, or sushi dining experiences.

But in recent years, the biggest issue that has been bugging white people to the point of complaint but not action has been the death of print media. Bring up any newspaper and white people will begin saying how they fear for a world with no daily newspaper and that we will all suffer as professional journalists wither away and are replaced with silly blogs that have no importance.

This love of the print media comes from two places. The first is that all white people like to believe that they spend the majority of their news-consuming time reading the stories that matter and make a difference. Whether this is true is irrelevant, but it is a good way to appear smart to white people. Say something like "I can't believe no one is getting upset about what the city government is doing right now. It's like no one read that amazing piece in the paper." The white person will agree with you and respect your news acumen.

Second, white people fear the death of the print media because deep down all white people want to believe that it's possible to make a living as a freelance writer. Of course, this is perhaps the biggest lie in white culture, pushing out such favorites as "I'm going to write a novel" and "I'll be fine for retirement if I start saving when I'm forty."

Of course, when you ask the white person if they actually subscribe to a daily newspaper, they will say that they get the Sunday New York Times. Which is a bit like saying you sponsor a child in Africa but only give enough money for him to eat on Sunday.



New York, New York

* Overview: The New York City resident is one of the most envied white people in the entire world. Their access to art galleries, restaurants, public transit, and pools of hobo urine is second to none. Fiercely proud of their city, all New Yorkers consider themselves to be the last one in. That is to say, everyone who moved to New York after them made the city a considerably worse place to live and thus are not considered "real New Yorkers."

* Strengths: Can get you into places that don't exist; able to survive in small spaces.

* Weaknesses: Cannot go fifteen minutes without telling you they live in New York. Also driving.

* Secret Shame: Actually from Ohio.



Unpaid Internships

Throughout most of the world, when a person works long hours without pay, it is referred to as "slavery" or "forced labor." For white people this process is referred to as an internship and is considered to be an essential stage in white development.

The concept of working for little or no money under a mentor has been around for centuries in the form of apprenticeship programs. Young people eager to learn a trade would spend time working under a master craftsman to learn a skill that would eventually lead to an increase in the intern's own material wealth.

Using this logic you would assume that the most sought-after internships would be in areas that lead to the greatest financial reward. Young white people, however, prefer internships that put them on the path for careers that will generally result in a decrease of material wealth (at least when compared to the wealth accumulated by their parents).

For example, if you present a white nineteen-year-old with the choice of spending the summer earning $15 an hour as a plumber's apprentice or making $0 answering phones at Acme Production Company, they will always choose the latter. In fact, the only way to get the white person to choose the plumbing option would be to convince them that it was leading toward an end-of-summer pipe art installation.

White people view the unpaid internship as their foot in the door to such high-profile low-paying career fields as journalism, film, politics, art, nonprofits, and anything associated with a museum. Any white person who takes an internship outside these industries is either the wrong type of white person or a law student. There are no exceptions.

If all goes according to plan, an internship will end with an offer of a job that pays $24,000 per year and consists entirely of the same tasks they were recently doing for free. In fact, the transition to full-time status results in the addition of only one new responsibility: feeling superior to the new interns.

When all is said and done, the internship process serves the white community in many ways. First, it helps train the next generation of freelance writers, museum curators, and director's assistants. But second, and more important, internships teach white children how to complain about being poor.

So when a white person tells you about their unpaid internship at The New Yorker, it's not a good idea to point out how the cost of rent and food will essentially mean that they are paying for the right to make photocopies. Instead it's best to say, "You earned it." They will not get the joke.

More insightful than ever - oh, and still funny.

Stuff White People Like is, to be blunt, something that very few people seem to get. It's not just an attack on hipsters, and it's certainly not racist, but rather, it's an attack on privilege. The 20 and 30-something upper-middle class kids Lander mocks benefit tremendously from their positions as children of the elite, and have created their own "culture" that reflects their pretensions by affirming their own uniqueness and artistic merit without requiring any real effort. It's also an attack on class (which Lander shows is bound up with race in this country - see the San Francisco white person), and repeatedly points out that in order to advance in a society controlled by the "right kind of white people," you have to parrot their views and affirm their (well-meaning, but sill patronizing) stereotypes, which is ironic considering how tolerant and open-minded they claim to be. This might sound bitter or partisan, but Lander is a young liberal who worked as a PhD student in Lit Crit, so he's as much a part of this group as anyone, and consequently is less hostile than you might imagine. As a member of the group satirized, I can say that while Lander is occasionally harsh, he never comes across as mean spirited, but mostly just disappointed, and even when he is slightly bitter he remains highly insightful.

Of course, all this belies the concern most people (rightly) have: Is this book funny, and is it worth purchasing when his website is free? To the first, I can say that he is indeed quite funny, and to the second, most of the best material was written for the book, so there's plenty of reason to check it out. The individual new entries are quite good (Duke Basketball, Losing Weight, Taxes, Punctuality, etc), but the best part is the addition of white people by city. The residents of a stereotypically "(right kind of) white" city (Portland, Austin, Asheville) are presented with an illustrated diagram, followed by a series of statements that analyze their strengths and weaknesses (Atlanta white person - might know a black guy, but takes jokes about the South personally, and has a Republican family).

Overall, most of the book is new material, and that new material is consistently funny (especially if you know people like this) while not lacking in valid criticisms of the people mocked. The only area in which this book is lacking is that it has no suggestions for how members of this demographic can better themselves and stop being so self-absorbed. Still, for anyone looking for a humorous (but not superficial) lampoon of race and class in North America, this book is great.

Just as good as Stuff White People Like, if not better (look for the line drawings!)

As a follow-up to Stuff White People Like, Whiter Shades of Pale is absolutely no less hilarious. This time Lander's focus is more on the geography of whiteness, mainly with 24 dead-on, absolutely brilliant line drawings that depict the prototypical white person from each city/region with callouts of the accessories and icons that make them so...Caucasian. (Seattle guy drinking coffee: "NOT Starbucks. This is some next generation coffee that you can't even begin to understand right now.") The entries, most of which have never been published on the blog before, are equal parts deadpan humor and freakish accuracy. Anthony Bourdain, British slang, products made by people named Tom, promising to learn a new language, not vaccinating children, Christopher Guest movies, and of course, ugly sweater parties. Just to name a few.

There have always been plenty of detractors out there who take Lander's satire too seriously and miss the entire point. Yes, you could call this cultural criticism--but it's way more fun than that. The enjoyment of his books comes from reading his entries on messenger bags or heirloom tomatoes or punctuality and thinking to yourself (with a smirk on your face) that you've been nailed. You're guilty as charged.

It Just Gets Better

I wasn't sure that there really would be enough material for a sequal to Mr. Lander's first book, but he does not disappoint. I was smiling from the first entry to the last and think this outing is better than the first. I ended up ordering a dozen for the holidays - for all my friends he so aptly pokes fun at. Well done!

A principal leader of the “Coconut Grove School” of tropical organic architecture, he is arguably the most renowned and honored architect in the history of Florida architecture, and his influence has been felt throughout the United States and the Caribbean. Attaining an almost rock star–like status in his home city of Miami, Parker was publicly praised by Frank Lloyd Wright, something Wright rarely did.Parker’s work and philosophy has had an ecological and environmental basis since the early 1940s. He began expressing an interest in alternative fossil fuels and renewable energy sources in the 1970s, far ahead of the current trends in green and energy-conscious architecture. He has continually placed an emphasis on using local materials and has been increasingly praised for his early exploration in environmentally friendly design.

Alfred Browning Parker... At Last!

This career survey of the work of the esteemed South Florida architect Alfred Browning Parker is a volume for which I've waited decades. ABP, whose work received praise from Frank Lloyd Wright, was almost certainly the Miami area's most influential architect, at least during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. I am not an architect or architectural historian, but I grew up very much under the sway of the ABP "organic" aesthetic, recognizing in his residential designs an artistry in creating homes of beauty and comfort with paramount sensitivity to both the general environmental issues of South Florida and the specifics of the often idiosyncratic sites chosen for his designs. He designed homes and workplaces both for those who could afford luxury and for those who had to build within tight budgets, both with equal enthusiasm and thoughtfulness. His work stands in diametric opposition to the strip malls, the faceless homes and the McMansion proliferation which have come to blight South Florida over the past several decades.

Much of APB's work has been demolished or altered without sensitivity, and there has been no collection of his work available to date. Randolph Henning's volume, being published just months after the nonagenarian subject's death, represents an extremely well-conceived survey of the architect's life work, focusing on a wide range of residential and commercial projects, both realized and unbuilt. The organization of the book is excellent, and the reproduction of photos and drawings is very good. The textual components are substantive and insightful. I would have liked to have seen the format larger, particularly as this is likely to remain the definitive representation of the extraordinary body of work Alfred Browning Parker created during his long, productive life.

This is an essential volume for anyone with an interest in the architecture and aesthetics of South Florida, though interest will doubtless be much wider amongst the architecture community. This is a book for those who envisioned the possibility of a Miami in which an Alfred Browning Parker could prevail. Thank you, Randolph Henning, and here's hoping this publication will inspire interest and perhaps even preservation of more of this iconic, sumptuous architecture.

This book is a must for any person interested in 20th-century architecture and modernism

This book does several things which should be standard in all architectural books but is, sadly, often not.

Each house has its own clearly defined section. Too many architectural books scatter images and plans and descriptions throughout a book. Lord, is anything more irritating? Or confusing?

The book has floors plans! And large enough to actually understand them! Again, too many architectural books do not. This should be a Federal crime!

The current status of each house is articulated! While reading you are never left with that lingering, dreaded question: is this house extant and cherished? You know right up front if it is. Or is not.

I also love that the books exists. I had never heard of Parker. It was a thrill to discover a talented architect who was largely overlooked by the national media.

This book is a must for any person interested in 20th-century architecture and modernism.

Mr. Alfred Browning Parker is "The Original Tropical Architect." in order to realize why this is so, a bit of historical prospective is required. After spending his childhood growing up in Miami he went on to attend the school of architecture at University of Florida (UF). There he meets the schools director Rudolf Weaver who became his principle mentor. While in school, Parker discovers Frank Lloyd Wright through the magazine Architectural Forum in 1938. Keep in mind that in 1936 Mr. Wright designed the first of the iconic "Usonian" Houses. These houses incorporated sustainable design concepts of solar heating, natural cooling, radiant floor heating, day lighting, with a strong visual relationship to the outdoors.

A few years after his introduction to the work of Wright, Weaver brought the work of Dr. John Gifford, a pioneer ecologist and professor at the University of Miami (UM), to his attention. Gifford's ecological philosophies resonated with Parker and on his return to Miami after graduating from the UF he introduced himself to and attended his classes at the UM. John Gifford eventually become Al Parkers father-in-law.

Al Parker opened his "workshop for the practice of architecture" in 1941, his work reflecting the influences of Weaver, Wright and Gifford. Parker went on to become Florida's foremost modernist architect, whose work reflected sensitivity to the Florida environment. Building in harmony with the climate and landforms, using local building techniques coupled with use of indigenous natural materials. The result was an honest architecture that was designed and built for its environment.

Long before "Green Architecture" became the word du jour, Al Parker embraced the principles of a south Florida vernacular architecture. Architecture "of the place" where it is built, rather than one that is created purely for stylistic purposes. South Florida's environment is hot, humid and wet, infused with tropical vegetation. These characteristics were best expressed in his houses that open to the outdoors, from the interior, through an exterior wall of hinged, operable wood louver, persiana doors, on to large covered verandas, to a lush tropical garden beyond. With large covered verandas protecting the interior from monsoon like rain fall, allowing the persiana doors to remain open to a cooling breeze.

Designing an architecture that responds to the sun, wind and environment only makes sense. These basic building blocks of "sustainable architecture" were expressed in the vernacular architecture of the Seminole Indians' "Chickee" hut shelters and that of early European settlers' Florida "Cracker" houses. It's back to the future, today these same principles are now espoused as the new "green" vision. Along with the South Florida's indigenous peoples, early settlers and Mr. Wright who came before him, Al Parker's work reflects these principles and inspired the next generation of young modernist Florida architects who aspired to follow his lead creating an organic architecture of and for South Florida.

"Make it useful and make it beautiful. That is all you need to know about architecture." These are the two main things Mr. Parker learned from his principle mentor Rudolf Weaver. The design philosophy by which he aspired for nearly 70 years.

The Architecture of Alfred Browning Parker, Miami's Maverick Modernist by Randolph C Henning was recently published by the University Press of Florida. This monograph beautifully depicts the man, his work and his philosophy.

Since Wiener has 25 years' experience in film commentary, his judgment as to what constitutes an important or "essential" movie for an independent and/or foreign film buff's home collection is worth noting. Here he annotates over 650 of the best foreign and independently produced films from the silent era through 2001, noting year and country of release, principal cast, director, MPAA rating, type of film (e.g., documentary, fantasy), and DVD features; of special interest is a "double feature" suggestion, followed by an often amusing one-paragraph critique. An appendix breaks out films by subgenres, and director, actor, and country indexes also facilitate access. Wiener's suggestions are excellent, and the "double feature" choices (e.g., My Night at Maud's coupled with The Tao of Steve) are always dead-on and sometimes provocative. Q. You're a chef, but your restaurant doesn't show up in this book until pretty late. If you're not writing about your restaurant--the fabulous Baohaus in New York--then what are you writing about?

A. Food is at the core of the book, but I examine it beyond the plate, almost as a symbol. There's only one recipe in this book and there are no measurements. I want people to understand the power that food has as a gateway drug into culture and history, but, first and foremost, my book tells a story about growing up Taiwanese-Chinese in America. It's a story about unpacking your identity, purging yourself of the things your environment has imposed upon your consciousness, and trying to set yourself free. I refused the American Experience I was sold, remixed it for myself, chopped it up, and sold it back.

Q. One of the powerful aspects of the book is the language you use, which feels completely original. Where does your voice come from?

A. Language is constantly changing and the biggest disservice you can do to yourself and your reader is to write how you think you're "supposed to" write. My parents didn't really speak English at home, so I had to develop my English voice independently and mostly through pop culture--I grew up speaking Chinese, listening to hip hop, and watching cable television. Learning to trust my own voice was probably the most important thing I ever did. When I was in college, Richard Ford visited during a speaking series and criticized Ha Jin, who had just won the National Book Award, for writing in English because it wasn't his native tongue, implying that Ha Jin should stick to Chinese. I was just a half-assed student at the time, but I stood up and argued with Ford from my seat till they made me sit down. My mother speaks broken English but even with her comic disregard for subject-verb agreement, she throws mad knowledge darts. You should never worry about what others think about the language you use, as long as it's truly your own.

Q. What do you want readers to take away from Fresh Off the Boat?

A. The simple surface reading of this book is to be yourself by any means possible. That's the basic theme, but I want people to see how implementing a simple concept like that takes a struggle between you and your country, you and your city, you and your reference group, you and your family, you and your race, you and the sub cultures you subscribe to, and on and on. It's about the constant battle between that little voice inside you and the people you love, the legacy you carry, the cultures that make you curious, the country that tells you who you're supposed to be. It's about the complexity of being an individual--about finding love in family, in friends, in food, in music and culture, and a million other surprising places, and figuring out how to bring all that together inside of you. It's about learning to be fearless, but it's also about the cost of those lessons and the literal and psychic violence you encounter when you try to break free.

There are tons of books about the struggle to be an individual, but with each one we reach more and more people who were never spoken to. I was always a weirdo growing up, but I believed that there were weirdos like me, and my writing this book is like Professor X putting on cerebro to find the other mutants.

Profane, profound, profusely entertaining.

"This book isn't for everyone. I thought it wasn't for me when I first started reading it.

Eddie Huang is the owner of Baohaus, a NYC eatery that is one of the hottest places in town. This is his autobiography, the story of his evolution from a confused kids who was fresh off the boat to an entrepreneur and a food celebrity. I really like thisi book because his life experience runs parallel to mine in many ways.

There are difference though, and even though Eddie speaks from a place that is near and dear to my heart, I am from an era that is far removed from Eddie Huang's generation. Hip-hop isn't my thing and I just don't get it. BUT, there are enough commonalities so that I do get where he is coming from. We both were born in Taiwan, we both came to America as young children. We both found our way through the maze that is America. Eddie did it about twenty years after I did, and he did it with far more courage. I went through the Caucasian society by keeping my head down and working at getting better and smarter their way. Eddie did it by figuring out his way and then having the courage and discipline to stay with it. I seethed inwardly at the racial stereotyping and the inequalities inherent in America, Eddie fought those things and more. Literally.

First of all, being the only Chinese kid in the neighborhood is not a good deal. The stereotypes run rampant and people get really ticked if you don't behave the way they want you to behave. Both of us have been through all that and Eddie's stories, while outrageous sounding, smack of the truth. He is as real as it gets, even more real than anyone wants.

The other part of the growing up Chinese/Taiwanese in America is the relationships we have with our families, particularly our parents. There is some hidden genetic code in Chinese parents, they all must have learned from the same book, just like the Tiger mom's book. You never praise your kid, you never let them know just how proud you are of them. Whatever they do is never enough and they are the dumbest, ugliest, the most worthless human beings on earth. While I love my parents, nothing I ever did was right, anything that I did which did not conform to their definitions of success: good grades, assimilation, wealth, and grudging acceptance by the Caucasians. was considered not good enough. So reading that part of the book was intense and had me riveted.

As a matter of fact, this book had me riveted for a good number of instance. Eddie Huang can write, his intelligence overflows the pages. But there are numerous times when he writes in his true street vernacular, those are the times that I really could not understand just what he is saying. But his rhythm, his tone, and his style really does help me transcend the lost in the translation feeling and drives home the points that he wanted to drive home.

I think the most enjoyable parts of the autobiography for me is when he starts talking about the foods of Taiwan and his own study of those foods. His expert descriptions of the street foods had my mouth watering at the memories and his description of his own culinary adventures had me marveling at his talent.

In the end, I think this is a book for the open minded. I don't think the average Food Network groupie would get into the cultural analysis inherent in the book. Many Chinese people would be horrified at some of young Eddie's adventures. It certainly won't make Chinese parents happy. In the end, Eddite Huang's honesty and straight as an arrow attitude is very attractive and makes for great reading."

Bold, irritating, at times illuminating and opaque

This was, when I finished it, clearly a 2-star book. That was 2 weeks ago. Then I had to go back to it a few times and reread some parts over again. Now as I write this review I've got to give it 3 stars just for the amount that it questioned my own assumptions, and I'm bordering on 4 stars for it's boldness and originality.

Let's get it out of the way first - Huang uses numerous subculture references - basketball, comic books, rap, fashion - to the point where you might have a hard time understanding what is going on. That's the point: he's not going to spell it out for you, he's going to talk to you like you already know what's going on. And if you don't know already, he's not going to take the time to explain it to you. You catch up or get lost in the dust.

And there are long passages about his "rough times" getting into fights with frat boys, petty larceny, and selling weed. His wild days don't seem as wild to me as they do to him.

But some of the things he writes about - growing up with an Asian face in America, using food to tell a story, why "fusion" food is almost always dangerous and disingenuous, trying to find out who you are when everyone else is forcing you into an answer you might not like - are really powerful and interesting. Few people are writing about some of this stuff, and it's impossible to ignore him or write this book off.

I may not have understood everything in this book, but I got the sentiment, and I think we'll be hearing about this book and Eddie Huang for years to come.

Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir

Being from the northern plains (fly-over country to those from the coasts), I was not aware of Eddie Huang or his Baohous restaurant prior to reading his memoir. Now I wish I lived closer to New York City so that I could taste a sample of his signature bao. I did know what they were (Taiwanese/Chinese meat in a bun) before reading the book, and his sound scrumptious.

Eddie Huang is the son of Taiwanese immigrants who struggled as many do to acclimatize and succeed in the United States. His father eventually put together enough capital to open and steakhouse and the family (parents and three sons) moved rapidly from poverty to wealth in Orlando, Florida. In the book Eddie describes the difficulties he had trying to find a way to fit in - a Chinese boy with a love of hip-hop and Taiwanese food. Eddie spent his teen years trying to live the gangsta lifestyle which eventually got him into trouble with the law. His parents sent him back to Taiwan to try to get his act together.

Eddie Huang is a very smart guy - both street smart and book smart. He learned from his past, went on to college and then to law school, making his father very proud by passing the bar exam on the first try. All set for life, escept that Eddie hated the legal life. He wanted to open a restaurant that would fill both a hip-hop need and a desire for authentic Taiwanese food. So with encouragement from such Food Network notables as Guy Fieri ("Diners, Drive-ins and Dives")and Anthoy Bourdain ("No Reservations")who he met through a cooking contest, Eddie moved ahead with his passion. It was an instant success and seems to be going well. He also writes a food blog and has several videos on his website that document much of what he has written in the book.

I enjoyed the book immensely. I found Eddie to be a fascinating character. However, readers should be forewarned; Eddie writes with passion and street language, so there are words and phrases that are both unfamiliar to those who don't get into hip-hop and many words that would be generally called gutter language. Nonetheless, I would happily recommend "Fresh Off the Boat" and wish Eddie Huang continued success.
