"A welcome and needed contribution to the global dialogues dedicated to the environment. It also highlights the importance authors of fiction play in denouncing abuses and practices within countries in which critiques of government policies can lead to persecution and ostracism."--Mary Ann Gosser Esquilín, Florida Atlantic University

From the rainforests of Costa Rica and the Amazon to the windswept lands of Tierra del Fuego, Laura Barbas-Rhoden discusses the natural settings within contemporary Latin American novels as they depict key moments of environmental change or crisis in the region from the nineteenth-century imperialism to the present.

By integrating the use of futuristic novels, Barbas-Rhoden pushes the ecocriticism discussion beyond the realm of "nature writing." She avoids the clichés of literary nature and reminds readers that today’s urban centers are also part of Latin America and its environmental crisis.

One of the first writers to apply ecocriticism to Latin American fiction, Barbas-Rhoden argues that literature can offer readers a deeper understanding of the natural world and humanity’s place in it. She demonstrates that ecocritical readings of Latin American topics must take into account social, racial, and gender injustices. She also addresses postapocalyptic science fiction that speaks to a fear of environmental collapse and reminds North American readers that the environments of Latin America are rich and diverse, encompassing both rural and urban extremes.

A Sentimental Journey and Continuation of the Bramine's Journal (Florida Edition of the Works of Laurence Sterne), by Laurence Sterne

The sixth volume of the Florida Edition of the Works of Laurence Sterne contains scholarly editions of two works of Sterne's last year of life, A Sentimental Journey and the Bramine's Journal (Journal to Eliza).  As with the first five volumes of the series (Tristram Shandy, the Sermons, and their annotations), the texts are presented as clean texts, with all textual and scholarly apparatus gathered at the end of the volume, including collations with existing manuscripts, a historical collation of the first three editions of Journey, and a comprehensive listing of all emendations made to the texts.   While relying on the scholarly edition of Journey by Gardner Stout (1967), this new edition has in many ways, both textual and annotative, altered his earlier work; and it presents as well the first truly scholarly edition of the Journal since Lewis Perry Curtis's edition in Letters (1935).

This book continues the tradition of the Florida Edition, providing an abundance of materials that are intended to elucidate but not interpret Sterne's writings.  New and Day build on Stout's fine annotations, but they add the commentaries of the intervening 35 years, along with some new recoveries and discoveries, and some corrections to Stout's edition.  The annotations to the Journal go well beyond Curtis's commentary, especially in drawing a strong relationship between the Journey and the Journal. As the editors argue in the extensive introduction, the two texts must be read together in order to be understood properly.

Sterne's writings in his last year belong together as the complex representation of his hopes and fears, his loves and his longings, as he prepared to face death and judgment. The dual presentation in this volume will not only enhance the reputation of the Bramin's Journal, but will bring to light aspects of A Sentimental Journey previously unnoted.

Sterne s works include The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy, and the satire A Political Romance (also known as The History of a Good Warm Watch-Coat). Sterne died in 1768 at the age of 54.

Portrait of the Artist as a Dying Man
By Tom Moran
Laurence Sterne may have been one of the most peculiar authors who ever lived. Spending most of his life as a provincial Anglican clergyman (albeit a randy one) with a wife he didn't get along with and on whom he cheated compulsively, troubled by the tuberculosis that would eventually kill him, he became famous overnight in his mid-forties with the publication of the first volumes of Tristram Shandy in 1760. While Sterne has never lacked for either admirers or detractors (some of the former are Thomas Jefferson, Friedrich Nietzsche and Virginia Woolf; examples of the latter are Samuel Johnson and William Makepeace Thackeray), he has somehow survived as one of the magnificent oddities of English literature.
Since the 1970s, Sterne's greatest champion has been Dr. Melvyn New of the University of Florida, whose edition of Sterne's Works has become the standard texts of Tristram Shandy and his Sermons. Now Dr. New has added a sixth volume to the series, consisting of A Sentimental Journey and Continuation of the Bramine's Journal.
At the time Sterne began A Sentimental Journey in 1767 (he never finished it -- what we have are the first two volumes of a projected four), he was at a crossroads in his career as a writer. The later volumes of Tristram Shandy had not sold as well or caused the stir of the earlier volumes, and Sterne may have felt that he had taken its strain of satiric ribaldry as far as it could go -- at any rate, he decided to change course, and to indulge in the then-popular mode of fictional pathos. To elicit a furtive tear, rather than a sly guffaw, was now his aim, and whether this was simple careerism or a genuine change of heart is for each reader to decide (although the evidence of the Bramine's Journal, never intended for publication, indicates that the latter was most likely the case).
The text of A Sentimental Journey doesn't present insurmountable difficulties (Sterne, unlike Swift, always scrupulously prepared his works for the press, and in any event Dr. New has the precedent, graciously acknowledged, of Gardner Stout's 1967 University of California Press edition), but the Florida edition, as impeccable as its scholarship is, is more interesting for what it doesn't do than for what it does. Unlike the Stout edition, in which a tiny island of text can be overwhelmed by a tsunami of annotation, New's Florida text is unencumbered by its nonetheless impressive scholarly apparatus, which is printed in the back. Dr. New is that academic rarity -- a scholar who actually gives a damn about the non-scholarly reader. The result, as with the rest of the Florida Sterne, is an edition that manages to have it both ways -- impeccable scholarship that does not overwhelm a text that is presented in a way so that it can be enjoyed for its own sake. Would that there were more editors like him.
Sterne is the poet of nuance (although at times his more earthy side takes over -- at one point he asks a woman hidden from him by a curtain "if she wanted anything," and gets back the reply, "Rien que pisser," which means just what you think it means), and there are times when the more lachrymal sentiments of the late 18th Century, so trendy then, feel strained now. But he sometimes managed to combine his empathy for others with his appreciation of the odd and the grotesque, as when he notices, at the opera comique, a dwarf with his view blocked by a "tall, corpulent German, near seven feet high, who stood directly betwixt him and all possibility of his seeing either the stage or the actors."
Mostly, however, A Sentimental Journey is about the exhilarating minutiae of traveling, unencumbered (as Sterne was at times when he made the journeys in France and Italy that inspired the book) by either wife of child, and moving through, as he mentions several times, a country with which his own was, at that time, at war. "I seldom go to the place I set out for," Sterne comments at one point, and the unpredictability of his peregrinations make the book feel more like life, and less like literature, than most books of his time -- or even ours. He can manage a delicacy of feeling combined with an intricacy of expression that make him seem a precursor of Proust.
The other work contained in the volume, Continuation of the Bramine's Journal (one wishes that Dr. New had been a tad less pedantically accurate and chosen instead the less holographically correct but inarguably more effective title that Sterne biographer Wilbur L. Cross gave it: the Journal to Eliza) is a diary kept by Sterne in the last year of his life and intended for a 23-year-old married woman named Eliza Draper, with whom Sterne had become hopelessly infatuated (an infatuation all the more hopeless since the lady's husband was in Bombay, where Eliza would soon join him). At their parting Sterne began keeping a journal that he assumed would be reciprocated by Eliza, and that at some point they would meet again and share their respective sentiments. Never published during his lifetime, it makes Sterne seem either hopelessly romantic or more than a little pathetic -- depending, I suppose, on one's age and/or gender. At any event, Sterne never saw Eliza again.
Together, these two works of the final year of Sterne's life give us both an impressive and moving Portrait of the Artist as a Dying Man, and Dr. New and the University Press of Florida are to be congratulated for their persistence in putting out, over a period of three decades, so splendid an edition of a classic author. This latest volume more than lives up to the high standards of the previous five, and should be read by anyone even remotely curious about one of the most curious and brilliant authors ever to write in English.

Deforestation and Land Use in the AmazonFrom University Press of Florida

"This volume has the strength of bringing together a diverse set of disciplines not just to juxtapose different approaches to the long-standing pattern/process relationship (which so much of the literature does) but to cut across the thorny attributes of spatial and temporal scale, which so often divide remote-sensors from social scientists."--Lowell Pritchard, Jr., Emory University

The Amazonian territories of Brazil, Bolivia, and Ecuador encompass nearly half of the world's remaining tropical rainforest and contain a wealth of biodiversity whose value we have only begun to appreciate. Deforestation and Land Use in the Amazon is an authoritative analysis of the socioeconomic and biophysical factors operating at local, national, and global levels that serve to promote deforestation in this delicate region.

The leading scholars and specialists in this volume, from both Latin America and the United States, present a uniquely interdisciplinary study of the historical, economic, and political causes accounting for the pace and pattern of the area’s deforestation. Their collected research provides a highly instructive sampler of the best and most useful approaches to land use and deforestation across the broad range of disciplines, agencies, and orientations involved, from the long-term impact of road construction projects, colonization schemes, and commodity prices to immediate concerns over quality of life, water availability, and climate variation.

Heavily illustrated with numerous maps, tables, and charts, the book is an unmatched resource for planners, preservationists, regulatory agencies, demographers, and anyone interested in this environmentally strategic part of the world.

GOOD COLLECTION OF SCHOLARLY ARTICLES ON DEFORESTATION IN THE AMAZON
By Denis Benchimol Minev
The authors have put together a good collection of articles on deforestation and land use in the Amazon. Having come to the subject with only limited knowledge, after reading most of the articles a reader is able to speak knowledgeably on the subject.

Articles focus on very distinct topics such as:

1) Migration patterns and the way they have affected land use and deforestation

2) The choice of migrants to go to cities or urban areas

3) The pattern of deforestation along major roads

4) The demographic profiles of colonists and the effect they have on land use choice

An interesting characteristic is that land use choices were very different among settlers, even in similar areas. Oftertimes these were based on demographics (age and composition of families), wealth levels, and knowledge base. Also interesting were the description of efforts of participative land use planning and the potential benefits of bringing stakeholders in making good and lasting land use decisions.

The articles in this book were compiled from academic publications, so were not geared towards the general public. Of the 14 articles assembled, perhaps 3 or 4 are difficult to read. All are academic, bringing in many references to previous work. If one is willing to tear through academic articles on the subject, there is much very interesting knowledge to be gained.

"Excellent. This is a fine, and unusual, collection of literary Americana."--Atlantic

"Fine comic moments of truth."--New York Times Book Review

"An invaluable source of literary history."--Publishers Weekly

This is the story of one of the most famous literary "sets" of the twentieth century. Gerald and Sara Murphy were at the center of a group including Ernest Hemingway and his wives, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Archibald MacLeish, Dorothy Parker, Alexander Woollcott, Robert Benchley, Phillip Barry, and many others.  They personified the jazz age and the lost generation. The Murphys have been viewed primarily as cult/pop figures. In this book Miller shows, through a sequential interweaving of letters from several correspondents, that they actually were the nucleus without which the group as we know it would not have stayed together. Miller allows the individual correspondents to tell their own stories, providing  new insights into their lives and this era.  It is the best sort of eavesdropping.

Gerald and Sara Murphy married on December 30, 1915.  Both families were moneyed and cosmopolitan.  Their attraction to each other was in part based on their desire to escape the routine and predictable social rounds in which their families were immersed.  Against their families' wishes, they and their three children left for Europe in 1921.  They remained in France for over a decade, and quite naturally socialized with the expatriate set.  They were, in part, models for Dick and Nicole Diver in Tender Is the Night. MacLeish wrote poems about them, their friends paid tribute to them and relied on them day to day and in correspondence, and their own letters are worth reading for their liveliness and because they so well preserve a record of the twenties and thirties.

Miller provides nearly every extant letter between the Murphys and their friends during those decades.  Most of them have not been published previously, and of course, they have never been presented collectively.  Together, they constitute an epistolary "novel" of peculiar power and authenticity about a remarkable era.

From Publishers Weekly
The letters collected here, written from 1920 to the mid-'60s, suggest that the Murphys were much more than rich Americans abroad who hosted famous fellow expatriates in France during the '20s and '30s. The couple and their three children, in fact, provided essential support for writer friends who left indelible marks on modern literature, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Archibald MacLeish, John Dos Passos, Ernest Hemingway and Dorothy Parker among them. The literati's letters reveal hitherto unknown sides--witty and sometimes acrimonious, they are always full of love and admiration when addressed to Gerald and Sara. Great depths of feeling are conveyed in messages about the deaths of the Murphys' two young sons, which foreshadowed other heartbreaks endured by the group: Zelda's psychosis, Scott's demise, Hemingway's suicide. A welcome reminder of those promising decades, the collection is an invaluable source of literary history. Miller teaches English at Pennsylvania State University. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
In this collection of the correspondence between Sara and Gerald Murphy, spanning the years 1925 to 1964 shortly after Gerald's death, the names of "lost generation" luminaries fairly leap off the pages: Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Archibald MacLeish, Alexander Woolcott, Robert Benchley. Other letters include intriguing glimpses into other famous figures of the period (e.g., King Vidor). The letters are by turns humorous, sad (as on the deaths of their two young sons), and argumentative but are usually entertaining and illuminating. Recommended for academic libraries with courses supporting an interest in the art, literature, and culture of the period.

I went through a phase of reading everything about Sara and Gerald Murphy and am completely fascinated by their lives, the impact that their lives had on their friends and the frank look at the lives of their friends. This is a remarkable, poignant account of an incredible generation. It provides a deep sense of the pluses and minuses of fame, money and privilege. The times really come alive in the collection of letters and the narrative. Better than any novel.

Black Blood Brothers: Confraternities and Social Mobility for Afro-Mexicans (History of African-American Religions), by Nicole von Germete

Celebrating the African contribution to Mexican culture, this book shows how religious brotherhoods in New Spain both preserved a distinctive African identity and helped facilitate Afro-Mexican integration into colonial society. Called confraternities, these groups provided social connections, charity, and status for Africans and their descendants for over two centuries.

Often organized by African women and dedicated to popular European and African saints, the confraternities enjoyed prestige in the Baroque religious milieu of 17th-century New Spain. One group, founded by Africans called Zapes, preserved their ethnic identity for decades even after they were enslaved and brought to the Americas. Despite ongoing legal divisions and racial hierarchies, by the end of the colonial era many descendants from African slaves had achieved a degree of status that enabled them to move up the social ladder in Hispanic society. Von Germeten reveals details of the organization and practices of more than 60 Afro-Mexican brotherhoods and examines changes in the social, family, and religious lives of their members. She presents the stories of individual Africans and their descendants—including many African women and the famous Baroque artist Juan Correa—almost entirely from evidence they themselves generated. Moving the historical focus away from negative stereotypes that have persisted for almost 500 years, this study is the first in English to deal with Afro-Mexican religious organizations.

Review
"A well conceived and researched study that makes a significant contribution to central discussions in a growing field of Mexican history--the Afromexican experience. Beyond that, it will add to our overall understanding of how complex racially, ethnically, gender, and class based societies socially develop...[and] to our understanding of the Afromexican experience within the context of the broader colonial Mexican society."

The Ticket to Freedom: The NAACP and the Struggle for Black Political Integration (New Perspectives on the History of the South), by Manfr

After many years of neglect and misplaced criticism by contemporary activists, historians and the media, Berg restores the NAACP to its rightful place at the heart of the civil rights movement. Where others have dismissed the NAACP’s goals and methods as half-hearted, ineffective and irrelevant, Berg challenges the legalistic and bureaucratic image of the NAACP and reveals a resourceful, dynamic, and politically astute organization that did much to open up the electoral process to greater black participation. Readers interested in the African American freedom struggle will find a nuanced and judicious portrait of America’s veteran civil rights organization.

From Booklist
Berg, a German historian, directs this work to scholars and general readers in an effort to correct what he views as the underrating of the contributions of the NAACP to American racial equality. The NAACP took a bold approach, not accommodating the slow timetable for racial equality favored by whites. The group pushed ahead with public protests of customs and legal challenges to laws that segregated and disadvantaged blacks, its efforts culminating in the Brown v. Board of Education triumph. The NAACP early on targeted lynching as the violent and grievous signifier of race hatred. The organization saw efforts to secure voting rights as central to full citizenship for black Americans. Berg details the growth of the NAACP, its successes and failures, and the major figures who helped advance the NAACP, including W. E. B. DuBois, Thurgood Marshall, Moorfield Storey, Walter White, and Oswald Garrison Villard. This book, first written in German, is part of a series of new perspectives on the history of the South. Fluid and compelling
By AfroAmericanHeritage
Despite its long history at the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, no one has yet written a comprehensive history of the NAACP, largely because it would be impossible to do so in a single volume. In TICKET TO FREEDOM, Manfred Berg focuses on the NAACP's struggle for the right to vote, from its founding in 1909 until the early 1970's. Along the way, he addresses many of the criticisms (and myths) surrounding the organization: is it a grassroots or "top down" organization? Did it embrace anticommunism to the detriment of the movement? Did it simply create a "racial spoils system" which ensured privileges for those who did not need them?

You'll have to read the book yourself to find the answers, but rest assured that will be smooth sailing. Berg's narrative style is fluid and compelling, revealing a resourceful and dynamic organization which has done much to open up the electoral process to greater black participation.

Tales from the 5th Street Gym: Ali, the Dundees, and Miami's Golden Age of Boxing, by Ferdie Pacheco

Be a part of the legendary boxing gym in its prime

"It was the gym where the Muhammad Ali legend was born. The 5th Street Gym in Miami and those that inhabited it are gone now, but inside these pages their spirit lives."--Thomas K. Stewart, Boxing Writers of America

"Ferdie Pacheco takes you back to a time and place that no longer exist in boxing. On these pages, you are standing alongside the great characters of the sport, inside the wonderfully eclectic 5th Street Gym. You can feel the rhythm of the gym, smell the sweat, and hear the pounding of the heavy bags. What a ride."--Robert Cassidy, Newsday

In its forty-year existence, the 5th Street Gym housed the training grounds for three of the greatest fighters the sport has ever known--Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, and Sugar Ray Leonard--and became the locus for a grand total of fourteen world champions. The site was also a magnet for a wide range of international celebrities including Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Jackie Gleason, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, and Sylvester Stallone, who were all absorbed into the gym's legend. The 5th Street Gym's beginnings trace back to 1950, when Chris Dundee, along with his brother Angelo, began promoting big-time boxing at Miami Beach.

Tales from the 5th Street Gym includes a wealth of never-before-seen photographs and is the first to chronicle the fascinating history of the 5th Street Gym from one of its insiders--Dr. Ferdie Pacheco--with crucial contributions from Tom Archdeacon, Angelo Dundee, Suzanne Dundee Bonner, Enrique Encinosa, Howard Kleinberg, Ramiro Ortiz, Edwin Pope, Bob Sheridan, and Budd Schulberg. Discover the secret history of one of boxing's most hallowed grounds, as Pacheco recalls the rise, heyday, and fall of the "sweet science" at Miami Beach.

Jabs and gab from the 5th Street Gym

In the long and colorful history of boxing, there was no place as singularly important to the game as the 5th Street Gym. Located on South Beach between the area's heydays, the gym was a sort of ground zero for a good two decades of the mid 20th century, where hard-nosed Cuban fighters such as Luis Manuel Rodriquez and Florentino Fernandez ended up after fleeing Castro, where everyone from Kid Gavilan to Joe Louis would come to train for their championship bouts.

Mostly, though, the 5th Street Gym was known as the home of Muhammad Ali, who continues to be considered the greatest of them all. Chris Dundee ran the place like a minor fiefdom; handling all the action in the manner of a potentate. And in Ali's corner was Chris' brother Angelo, Cuban ex-pat Luis Sarria and Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, all of them on hand for -- and instrumental to -- Ali's rise to the top.

Pacheco, who appears Tuesday at Books & Books in Coral Gables, has just released an oral history, Tales from the 5th Street Gym (Florida, $27.50), that has enough first-hand accounts and on-scene photos to bring back all the glory. Pacheco, most famously known as ``The Fight Doctor,'' was in the champ's corner for ``The Thrilla in Manila'' and ``The Rumble in the Jungle,'' and he recounts those episodes with great charm.

The book tells the story of a place graced with unparalleled character. An integrated place, the first of its kind in Florida, where fighters learned to fight, trainers perfected their game, and celebrities hobnobbed with old-timers like Evil Eye Finkle, Sam the Mumbler, Raincoat Rabinowitz and Tip Toe Tannenbaum.

We visited Pacheco in his Bay Point home and asked him about the book, the gym and about his place alongside ``The Greatest.''

Q: You say in your intro that this book is primarily to ensure the legacy of Chris Dundee, without whom there wouldn't even be a gym. What did he bring to the fight game?

A: He brought a consummate professionalism that we didn't have here before. Plus he brought substantial underworld connections, which you had to have if you were gonna have boxing. He had Frankie Carbone in his pocket -- or Frankie Carbone had him in his pocket. So when you've got the mob, and you've got the location, and you've got the fighters, you needed someone to coordinate all that, to make sure it worked.

Q: Would it be fair to say that there might not even be an Ali -- or at least an Ali as we know him -- were it not for the efforts of Chris Dundee?

A: No, I don't think that's right. Ali was gonna be Ali no matter what. Whoever's there was going along for the ride, just holding on for dear God. Whoever it was. It doesn't make any difference. There were a lot of boxing guys who would have been thrilled to get a hold of Ali. You didn't have to do anything. Somebody handed you Ali, and you just sat down and counted the money.

Q: There are scores of stories about Ali's trainer Angelo Dundee, but corner man Luis Sarria seems to be a bit forgotten.

A: He was hugely overlooked because he didn't speak English. He was like a serf in a medieval castle. He was the guy that they called in the middle of the night to massage the king.

Q: But was he instrumental to Ali's career?

A: Oh yeah, because Ali listened to him. He wouldn't listen to anyone else, but he'd listen to Sarria. Sarria got him in shape, and Sarria was a very, very smart boxing guy. And he'd say what Angelo said, Angelo would say what I said, or vice versa. We had a unified corner.

Q: What are some of your fondest memories working with Ali?

A: Fondest memories are beating Liston here, for the first time. Beating Frazier in the Philippines was the best fight of my life. I've never seen anything that big. And beating Foreman in the jungle at four in the morning. Those were the three big, big occasions. I mean, you couldn't get any bigger than that. You cannot express the absolute thrill of being right next to the guy in those days.

Q: Why did you stop working with him?

A: I thought he was being mismanaged into oblivion. He was already a basket case, and they kept putting him in against better fighters. Finally they put him in against Holmes, who was then the champion, and that was a disgrace. That was murder. So I walked away. [His Parkinson's:] would not be as bad had he quit when I told him, after the Frazier fight in Manila. He would not be good, but he wouldn't be as bad.

Q: Who are some of the other top-notch fighters who came out of the 5th Street Gym?

A: The main one, the best one, was Luis Manuel Rodriquez. He was the welterweight champion. He taught Ali how to fight. Florentino Fernandez too; he was just a devastating fighter.

Q: For many years you ran a clinic in Overtown. Can you please tell us a bit about that?

A: For 20 years I ran a clinic on [NW:] Second Avenue and 10th Street, and I never took a dime. The neighborhood was like Porgy and Bess then. It was all black, but there were no race riots or anything like that. It was terrific. I used to go to the Sir John's Club, and The Harlem Square Club was right across the street from my place. I caught everyone. I'm a jazz fan. You walk across the street, and there's Lester Young blowing; Billie Holiday; the whole Ellington Band. At 12 a.m. they threw them all off the Beach, so they'd come right over, and they'd jam till 5 in the morning. Boy, those were the days.

A Walking Pugilistic Fight History
By Pugwash
The backdrop for this book is the old 5th Street Gym in Miami, a storied training ground in the 1960's for some of the greatest fighters to lace up the gloves.

But, in many ways, this is the story of the famed "Fight Doctor", Ferdie Pacheco, who came to fame as Muhammad Ali's principal health advisor during his illustrious career. Pacheco spins some great stories of his own, here, and also has an incredible personal story to tell.

Before earning wealth as a repected network commentator on boxing, Pacheco worked the equivalent of two full time jobs administering free health care to the poor in neighborhoods in Miami inhabited by poor immigrants from mostly Latin American countries. His association with Muhammad Ali was as a result of meeting him through Angelo Dundee, and his brother Chris, who promoted the fights, and was involved with the gym.

Pacheco's association with Ali was born of his love for Ali, and his equal ardor for the fight game. Pacheco remained an unofficial advisor, as he never took any money from Ali during his years with him.

It is hard to forget Pacheco warily forecasting doom prior to Ali's fight with novice Leon Spinks, a 6-1 underdog in 1978. Few heeded his cautious words, but Pacheco knew Ali intimately, and understood the risks the aging fighter was taking in climbing through the ropes at this point in time. Yet, much of this book is a celebration of Ali, and his greatness as an athlete, and a person.

He also speaks of many other fighters who came through the 5th Street Gym, like Jimmy Ellis, willie Pastrano, and the great Cuban fighter Luis Manuel Rodriguez. One of the best stories was of a Heavyweight sparring partner named
Willie Johnson.

The book has beautiful pictures, is engaging and interesting, and is told from an insider point of view.
