Professional counselor Sullivan supplements his breezy advice with anecdotes from his clients to coach gay readers looking for Mr. Right. As the "101" title implies, this is a beginner's guide with Sullivan starting at the ground level ("What is a date?"). His baby-steps approach covers potential opening lines for small talk with strangers; a three-page list of qualities to help narrow the focus of what your Mr. Right needs to possess; and locations for running into eligible men. Sullivan's banal scripted "one-minute encounters" should encourage even the most tongue-tied that it doesn't take clever observations to open a conversation. Some of Sullivan's advice seems so rudimentary that it seems designed for shut-ins rather than someone new to gay dating. One of the things not to say on a first date is "My father was a drunk," while Sullivan says men like to hear "Your butt is awesome," "I'm so proud of you" and "You make fabulous coffee." Sullivan's advice is more constructive when dealing with relationships: dating someone with a different HIV status; integrating your "inner teenager"; working through internalized homophobia; and suggested communication strategies for couples. The book ends with a useful resource guide that lists online matchmaking services, gay organization links and reference directories

Great book, makes you think...

I bought this book somewhat out of curiosity and some because of the other reviews. Well I can tell you what it is is a great book to use to both understand what you are doing right in the dating world, but also what you are doing wrong!! I highly recommend it and have already been doing that to my friends.

After reading the bread and butter gay dating books (e.g. "the MANdates") Dating 101 emerged from the stack. Most importantly, the author Jim Sullivan gives practical advice to integrate into your everyday life. Using real cases of men he worked with, Sullivan addresses the psychology of many gay relationships while helping the reader understand what successful relationships and dating should look like. This means recognizing the "red flags" faster while gaining a clearer understanding of your own issues.

An earlier reviewer complained: the book did not help him meet science geeks. In context, it seems like this reviewers issues are more with the gay community than the text. Clearly, Morrison cannot address every social niche. Despite this, Morrison works will all sorts of men and he offers advice on how to meet men and expand your social circle.

If you want a textbook on dating, you have come to the wrong place. However, for anyone looking for an enjoyable book with practical advice and insight, this text is recommended.

Generally a Good Book; Great Thought Starter

A great book for those just starting on the gay dating scene, or for those who haven't been having much luck. This book guides you from A-Z on how to date, how to avoid many of the pitfalls that gay men face while dating, and how to make a relationship last. My only major disagreement is that the author states that most gay men go through a 'slut stage' before they are ready to settle for love. This may be true for a large number of gay men, but I know many others that wait for love to have sex. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a good general guide to dating other men.

About the Author
Joe Brewster, M.D., and Michèle Stephenson are the directors of the award-winning documentary American Promise. Brewster is an attending psychiatrist at Harlem Hospital in New York and an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University. He was raised in Los Angeles and studied medicine at Harvard University. Stephenson has worked as an international human rights lawyer and a film producer. She is a graduate of Columbia Law School.
 
Hilary Beard is the co-author of several books, including the New York Times bestsellers 21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox and Venus & Serena: Serving from the Hip.

An Uncomfortable Read for Parents Who Have Been There

It took me a while to pick up this book knowing that it would be talking about the failure of our current society to treat boys of color as the valuable human beings they are.
While my two sons are in their late twenties, these years since their birth have been frightful at times.
The book brings back many of the concerns I had as a mom of two brown skin boys growing up in upper middle class neighborhoods in South Florida.
As I look at our two grandsons, the concerns are no less.
As the writer commented, society still has a hard time looking at brown-skinned boys as children. They are so often and early seen as threats by teachers, and others who are supposed to be a help and resource to them in growing up.

While the book has many good pointers and good insights, I fear it will only be read by those who are educated and parents of boys of color.
It also reminds me of another poignant book I read 20 years ago whose title still sticks in my mind because it alone said volumes..."The War Against Boys."
That is what boys of color deal with everyday--a war against them from many fronts. No wonder so many of them wind up in jail or prison. Unfortunately, my family (even with all of its education and modest income) did not escape this outcome.
Being disliked or hated just because you are brown skinned and male is a heavy burden to bear.

Exceptional! This will be another tool in my mom belt!

This book is fantastic! As a mother of young, black men, I struggle at times to find the right tools to help my sons. Some tools I have, but this book has given me so many more to use. I love how the authors will use different points of view to dissect a subject and help you through the conversations they generate. Thank you for such a beautiful , thorough understanding of my children.

Moving and informative book, a real eye-opener.

Although I am not African-American, I got this book to learn more about what other families are going through. I wanted to be more aware of the situation and the hardships, and find out how I can possibly be a positive contributor to this, specifically with our friends and in a larger way by being informed and raising my kids to be sensitive to others in life. Dr. Brewster did an amazing job of explaining the problems and defining proactive ways for improvement. I'm really glad I read it and highly recommend it.

 Tim Boyd challenges one of the most prominent explanations for the precipitous fall of the Democratic Party in southern politics: the “white backlash” theory. Taking the political experience in Georgia as a case study, he compellingly argues that New South politics developed out of the factional differences within the state Democratic Party and not simply as a result of white reactions to the civil rights movement.

Boyd deftly shows how Georgia Democrats forged a successful (if morally problematic) response to the civil rights movement, allowing them to remain in power until internal divisions eventually weakened the party. But he also demonstrates that they ultimately adjusted to the political challenge of the civil rights movement and helped shape post–civil rights regional and national politics for a further generation.

Combining oral histories, newspaper reports, electoral returns, tape-recorded conversations, and private papers, Boyd offers a fresh interpretation of how American politics has changed since the end of the “New Deal Order.” He recognizes the myriad forces southern leaders faced as the Jim Crow South gave way to new political realities and greatly enhances our understanding of southern politics today.

No Christian denomination has had a longer or more varied existence in the American South than the Catholic Church. The Spanish missions established in Florida and Texas promoted Catholicism. Catholicism was the dominant religion among the French who settled in Louisiana. Prior to the influx of Irish immigrants in the 1840s, most American Catholics lived south of the Mason-Dixon line. Anti-Catholic prejudice was never as strong in the South as in the North or Midwest and was rare in the region before the twentieth century.
   
James Woods’s sweeping history stretches from the first European settlement of the continent through the end of the Spanish-American War. The book is divided into three distinct sections: the colonial era, the early Republic through the annexation of Texas in 1845, and the stormy latter half of the nineteenth century. Woods pays particular attention to church/state relations, mission work and religious orders, the church and slavery, immigration to the South, and the experience of Catholicism in a largely Protestant region. He also highlights the contributions and careers of certain important southern Catholics, both clerical and lay, and considers how the diverse Catholic ethnic and racial groups have expressed their faith—and their citizenship—through the centuries.

About the Author
Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan were America's president and first lady, from 1981 to 1989.  Nancy Reagan was raised in Chicago and attended Smith College.  In New York, she appeared on Broadway.  She was signed by MGM and she made eight motion pictures before leaving to marry Ronald Reagan.  She is the author of a memoir, My Turn.

Just LOVED this book! I read it in one sunny day on the patio! Very sweet, well written and loved the copies of the actual letters/telegrams! It's a keeper!!

Understanding Nancy

This is an inside look at what made Nancy Reagan tick. She certainly was the well-loved wife of her Ronnie, and the feeling was mutual. I feel I understand Nancy much better as a woman and as a First Lady after reading this book. I always wondered why she couldn't warm up a little more to Raisa Gorbachev when it seemed like the whole state of the Cold War depended on it. Her husband and Gorby seemed to hit it off so well. The story reveals that Raisa was a complete bore on any social occasion. She didn't know how to converse politely but turned every opportunity, be it only a small intimate coffee with the First Lady, into a platform to parrot the communist ideology. Nancy wasn't able to handle this. (Interestingly, Barbara Bush, being more of a people person, was able to reach out and make a genuine friend of Raisa.) I was always turned off by Nancy's doll-like figure and obsession with expensive clothes. She makes the point that many of the expensive designer dresses she wore and some of the jewelry were loans or gifts from the designers. Since the First Ladies' clothes are paid for by the President,not the country, Nancy could not understand the criticism she received. The estrangement of the Reagans from their children during the presidency was very sad. Although this distressed Nancy greatly, she did not know how to bridge the gap. Nancy's love and support for her husband was very exemplary, and perhaps he could not have been the president he was without her at his side. My opinion of Nancy was much improved after reading this book.

My Turn - Excellent Read

This book was extremely well written. It followed the Reagan's life well as I remember it and Nancy always expresses her feelings in a very diplomatic way. I can only say that Nancy led an extremely interesting life with Ronald, with never a boring moment to spare. This is a good read for anyone. I don't think anyone realizes, or has the slightest idea, of how exhausting the first ladies life can be, especially with a second term to fill.
