The Lullaby of Polish Girls: A Novel (Random House Reader's Circle), by Dagmara Dominczyk

Includes an interview featuring Dagmara Dominczyk and Adriana Trigiani

A vibrant, engaging debut novel that follows the friendship of three women from their youthful days in Poland to their complicated, not-quite-successful adult lives

Because of her father’s role in the Solidarity movement, Anna and her parents immigrate to the United States in the 1980s as political refugees from Poland. They settle in Brooklyn among immigrants of every stripe, yet Anna never quite feels that she belongs. But then, the summer she turns twelve, she is sent back to Poland to visit her grandmother, and suddenly she experiences the shock of recognition. In her family’s hometown of Kielce, Anna develops intense friendships with two local girls—brash and beautiful Justyna and desperately awkward Kamila—and their bond is renewed every summer when Anna returns. The Lullaby of Polish Girls follows these three best friends from their early teenage years on the lookout for boys in Kielce—a town so rough its citizens are called “the switchblades”—to the loss of innocence that wrecks them, and the stunning murder that reaches across oceans to bring them back together after they’ve grown and long since left home.

Dagmara Dominczyk’s assured narrative flashes from the wild summers of the girls’ youth to their years of self-discovery in New York and Europe. Her writing is full of grit and guts, and her descriptions of the emotional experiences of her characters resonate with honesty. The Lullaby of Polish Girls captures the passion and drama of friendship, the immigrant’s yearning to be known, and the exquisite and wistful transformation of young women coming of age.

Praise for The Lullaby of Polish Girls

“A coming-of-age tale of three young Polish women [that is] brimming with teary epiphanies, betrayal and love, as well as the grit of both New York and Kielce. [It’s] Girls with a Polish accent.”—The New York Times

“The Lullaby of Polish Girls will make you swoon. Dagmara Dominczyk has written a glorious debut novel inspired by her own emigration from Poland to Brooklyn with depth, intensity, humor, and grace.”—Adriana Trigiani

“An ennui-stricken actress returns to the old country—and to the friends of her youth—in Dagmara Dominczyk’s The Lullaby of Polish Girls, in which solidarity is all about summer evenings under the stars with a vodka bottle and a radio playing ‘Forever Young.’ ”—Vogue

“Compelling . . . an original portrait of friendship and identity . . . Dominczyk uses a fresh, confident style.”—People

“In this arresting debut novel, Polish American film and TV actress Dominczyk pays homage to her native city of Kielce while capturing the joys, insecurities, and struggles of three girlfriends coming of age. Spanning thirteen years, Dominczyk’s absorbing story is a triptych of tsknota (Polish for a kind of yearning) and a profound desire for acceptance, freedom, and home.”—Booklist (starred review)

“The Lullaby of Polish Girls is sexy and sensitive, with a raw, openhearted center. Dominczyk’s love for her complicated characters is apparent from the first page to the last, and by the novel’s end the reader cares for them just as deeply.”—Emma Straub

*Starred Review* In this arresting debut novel, Polish American film and TV actress Dominczyk (Higher Ground, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Good Wife, Third Watch) pays homage to her native city of Kielce while capturing the joys, insecurities, and struggles of three girlfriends coming-of-age. Spanning 13 years, Dominczyk’s absorbing story is a triptych of tesknota (Polish for a kind of yearning) and a profound desire for acceptance, freedom, and home. Anna, an actress and daughter of a Polish refugee, lives with her hipster fiancé, Ben, in a cramped railroad apartment in Brooklyn. Anna and Ben are now “just an argument waiting to happen.” Her failing relationship, coupled with the recent news of her childhood friend’s husband’s murder and an untimely tough-love meeting with her agent, spurs the mercurial Anna to purchase a one-way ticket and escape to her babcia’s home in Polska. Meanwhile, her girlfriend Kamila’s been dealt a series of bad hands. Living with her oafish parents in a Polish enclave in Wyandotte, Michigan, and working as nanny to two bratty children, Kamila is reeling from the discovery that her husband is a closeted homosexual. Of Dominczyk’s three young protagonists, Justyna is the most absorbing and provocative. During her teenage years, Justyna is hard-core, drinking, cussing and “howling songs into the heavens” like a Spice Girl, with her hips working overtime and every gesture oozing sexuality. Justyna looks boldly ahead, bidding farewell to the past and eagerly toasting the New Year “with a wan smile and a wink.” --Miriam Tuliao

Read this book.
By coffeethepeople
This book is a rare treat. It chronicles the lives of childhood friends Anna, Kamila, and Justyna. Readers will appreciate the intensity and depth of these complex and multi-layered characters. Their lives are painful, difficult, and real. As with any childhood friendships, theirs undergoes many challenges and phases. And yet, despite all of the hardship, those friendships endure. Ultimately, they will always be there for each other, loyal, steadfast, and strong. It's their one true thing. Beautiful, really.

Some have found this novel to be too coarse or hard-core. I disagree. True, this is not light and fluffy stuff here. It's honest and raw and gritty, and, fittingly, so is its language. Others have noted that it jumps around chronologically and thought it confusing. I didn't find that confusing; it seemed more like the puzzle of their lives, but the pieces all fit together.

Of course, there's so much more going on in this book, including the wonderful Polish-ness of it all, but I'll leave that to others. What this writer truly captures is the soul of friendship that can exist anywhere.

If you find beauty in honesty, you will love this book.

Write on, Ms. Dominczyk.

That's Life
By Susan
I don't normally write reviews, probably because I never read other book reviews since I enjoy encountering a novel with no preconceived notions or somebody else's opinion rattling inside my brain. But this time, I am going to.

Dagmara's debut novel is beautifully written. Her imagery is gorgeous. I remember one line, "ribbons of countryside rolled past" (something along those lines) when Anna is traveling in Poland. I really recommend reading this book, and if you just shrugged your shoulders and tossed it in the back of your mind, allow me to stand up for The Lullaby of Polish Girls.

The book is real. It's nitty-gritty real. Every scene doesn't smell like roses and petunias, because sometimes life smells like frying sausage and pollution. The characters aren't happy-go-lucky because, honest to God, who really is? But that's what makes it all believable. So believable. Justyna is brash. There's a quietness, but a longing to be loved, in Kamila. Anna deals with a bout of depression. And the flashbacks to when the girls are teenagers and want so badly to be accepted and loved and they want all the neighborhood boys to want them, the author did a phenomenal job of capturing the the teenage years, even though she herself is not one anymore.

To the readers who said there's too many f-bombs or Polish words, I have a question for you: isn't that what life is? Every word we say isn't censored and for immigrant families, it's not always in English.

Dagmara, you crafted an inspiring story. Your words and characters truly came to life. It was entertaining and thought-provoking, and I cannot wait to read more of your work.

Sincerely,
Susan

This is the real thing
By karolinatx
I loved this book. I am not, perhaps, the most objective of reviewers as I am the same age as the author and had a very similar childhood, emigrating from Poland as a young girl and returning in the summers after the fall of communism. I am perplexed by the negative reviews of the book, which honestly sound like they were all written by the same sanctimonious biddy with an axe to grind. Because the author nails it. Nails. It. Her Poland is the real thing. And yes, of course, not everyone in Poland is a toothless drunk on welfare. But you cannot have spent any time in the country as a non-tourist and not recognize the characters Ms. Dominczyk describes. Her liberal use of Polish throughout the book is spot-on, which is a nice refresher from virtually every other novel I've read where Polish is used and inevitably mangled. You also cannot have spent any time in Poland with an open window and not heard the very language the other reviewer(s?) find so objectionable flying hard and fast on the street.

So, to recap: Writing? Good! Story? Good! Realistic snapshot of a very specific time in Poland's history? Good, good, good.

Praise for Balanchine Variations “If you like Balanchine, you must read Nancy Goldner's Balanchine Variations. She has the best ear for music and dance musicality of any dance critic writing today.”—Alastair Macaulay, New York Times “The book is modest and, at the same time, utterly self-assured. Anyone who cares about Balanchine should buy it immediately.”—Joan Acocella,New Yorker “A remarkable new book. Immediately takes its place among the half-dozen or so essential books on George Balanchine.”—Robert Gottlieb in the New York Review of Books In this deliciously evocative new volume, Nancy Goldner returns to offer in-depth discussions of twenty more of George Balanchine’s ballets. As in the critically acclaimed Balanchine Variations, Goldner’s focus is not on history or biography but on the dances themselves: the technique, the coordination with music, the storytelling, and the evolution of Balanchine’s style.
This encore performance features provocative and insightful descriptions and analyses of a group of works spanning forty years (1941–1981) and includes profiles of Ballet Imperial, Bugaku, Coppelia, Divertimento No. 15, La Valse, Symphony in C, and Union Jack, among many others. Inspiring, exquisite, and thought-provoking, More Balanchine Variations is both a delightful meditation on and an essential critical examination of some of the twentieth century’s most extraordinary works of art.  “Pure joy. Even more exciting and wonderfully imaginative than the author’s previous volume, this collection of personal essays about some of George Balanchine’s most beloved ballets takes a reader through deep levels of Balanchine’s sensibility. Nancy Goldner illuminates the organization of the works, their construction on the level of dance technique and its coordination with music, and—most marvelous—the spooky and passionate stories embedded within their ‘plotless’ maneuvers.”—Mindy Aloff, editor of Leaps in the Dark Nancy Goldner, author of Balanchine Variations, was a dance critic for the Christian Science Monitor, the Nation, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and Dance News for twenty five years. BALANCHINE is a registered trademark of The George Balanchine Trust.

an absolute pleasure
By yan ek
After Nancy Goldner's first Balanchine Variations I waited anxiously until the 2nd volume came out. It was well worth it and an absolute pleasure to look through and read. Ms. Goldner's observations are as spot on as ever and her lack of unnecessary sentimentality in chronicling the works and Mr. Balanchine is welcome. The choice of what ballets to include after the 1st volume's 20 selections was very interesting to me. Ballets like Symphony in Three Movements still await her touch. I hope to read more of her writing on on either Balanchine's works or other choreographers than she would care to look at with her keen intellect.

From Publishers Weekly
In the latest cultural-historical look at a beloved American foodstuff, anthropologist Mullins (Race and Affluence) offers a rather tangled explanation of the doughnut's origin, popularity and significance. Technically, the doughnut is probably Chinese in origin, though the Germans, French and Latin Americans also have valid claims; Mullins finds the 1669 Dutch recipe for "olie-koecken" most closely resembles today's beloved fried breakfast pastries. Mullins finds that for many immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, a jelly doughnut was the first food they tasted, permanently tying the pastry in new arrivals' minds to what it means to be American (though Canadians, who have a higher per capita rate of doughnut shops, may have a different opinion). Though occasionally subject to long-winded (largely pointless) academic digressions, Mullins' take on a much-maligned food is multifaceted and largely interesting. He introduces readers to the inventor of the doughnut hole, Captain Hanson Gregory, explores the traditional marriage of cops and doughnuts, looks at the brand loyalties of different demographics, and investigates the food's impact on public health with aplomb and curiosity. For those who can suffer the cravings, this makes a satisfying tour.

Review
"Mullins does a fine job of examining the doughnut not as a singular thing or symbol, but as a complex object that elicits many subtly different - sometimes contradictory - ideas about us. He grapples with the complicated social history of this particular food item not by merely examining its physical history, but by tracing the rich and complicated connections between doughnuts and people across time, space, ethnic identity, and national boundaries." - Jamie C. Brandon, coeditor of Household Chores and Household Choices"

A Beloved and Detested Sweet Treat
By Rob Hardy
"Tell me what you eat," said that philosopher of the kitchen Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, "and I will tell you what you are." What would he make of a nation which has the doughnut as one of the foods the world knows it by? What does it mean that doughnuts are defined as a particularly American food? Perhaps an anthropologist could tell us, and in the surprising and enlightening _Glazed America: A History of the Doughnut_ (University Press of Florida), anthropologist Paul R. Mullins has done so. Indeed, he has found those who say that a Krispy Kreme shop makes them proud to be Americans, and those who regard a shop as a shrine with pilgrims and converts. "It may seem absurd," Mullins writes, "that an apparently innocuous doughnut could be wrapped in the flag and lent an air of religiosity, but few dimensions of our world say as much about us as food." We do, however, have mixed feelings about our doughnuts. We may like them, but even those of us who like them know they are not really good for us, and there are those who hate them because they represent decadence or foolish food choices. Doughnuts, then, have a disputed symbolism, and their marketing and consumption can be mined, surprisingly, for various insights into American life.

The book reproduces a 1627 still life painting by Juan van der Hamen y Leon which shows pastries of the torus shape anyone would now recognize. This particular shape had one of its first mentions in print in 1877. That the toroidal shape certainly pre-dates cookbooks or oil paintings did not prevent an American from claiming invention of the doughnut hole. Captain Hanson Gregory, a cook at sea, found that the soggy and greasy doughnuts he was making resisted becoming more digestible by changing their ingredients, but once he lessened the lumps of dough by cutting a hole out, changing the shape made all the difference. He was nominated to the National Doughnut Hall of Fame for his contribution; the nomination read in part that he "not only discovered the hole in the first place, but invented the proper process for enclosing the hole in the doughnut." The Doughnut Corporation of America thus in the 1940s attempted to certify the appeal of assigning the origin of the hole in the doughnut to a New England seafarer. This is the same company that produced what Mullins says is "an ideologically distorted 1944 account" which claimed that the Pilgrims themselves brought their treasured doughnut recipe with them to the New World on the _Mayflower_.

In 2005, Florida governor Jeb Bush tried to strike a blow for Republicans within blue collar workers, when he wanted to know how many tax cuts Democrats had proposed for "Joe Bag of Donuts." In this, he was able to avoid reference to the drinking habits of Joe Six Pack, but Mullins shows that the consumption of doughnuts transcends economic class. However, the great spokesman for the doughnut is that industrial worker Homer Simpson, who gets four pages of coverage here in acknowledgment of his addiction. Mullins writes, "In _The Simpsons'_ hands, doughnuts are an especially powerful mechanism to examine the limits of desire, since doughnuts seem to have no significant redeeming feature besides the pleasure their ingestion produces." This "bad" characteristic has been the focus of the moralizing about doughnuts as early as 1846, and the importation of American doughnut franchises to other countries has been called "`calorie colonialism' planned by corporate America". The moral connection links cops to doughnuts, too; perhaps doughnut shops encourage being frequented by cops to keep robberies down, and perhaps, as one policeman argued, doughnut shops are easy places for cops to meet to discuss and solve crimes. Perhaps also they get free doughnuts (although any police force has rules against this), but there is no perhaps that doughnut shops remind citizens of the policeman's reputation for sloth and corruption. On a lighter note, wedding cakes are made from Krispy Kremes; one such record-breaker weighed over a ton, but many brides opt for a smaller version. In Portland, Oregon, Voodoo Doughnuts has doughnuts for weddings, and since the proprietors are ordained ministers, they offer weddings in the store. Mullins, as you can tell from this little summary, has pulled many facets of a humble luxury food together in a serious but entertaining study that answers in diverse ways the question, "What does the doughnut mean?"

An Interesting Read
By Maddie
Glazed America: A History of the Doughnut was interesting and exposed me to information about doughnuts I never knew, but I felt like sometimes it was dull and that the author could have done more for the book. It was lacking something, but I can't quite name what it is. I really loved the photos, though!

An absolutely delicious read.
By Dung Nguyen
This book was fun and quirky in style, but very informative at the same time; it covers just about every angle of approach towards the doughnut.

Take control of your conditioning regimen

"Well-organized, to the point, easy to read and full of practical and earnest advice for athletes."—Karen Kain, artistic director, National Ballet of Canada

"This well-rounded book deals with important issues that all dance professionals should know about."—John White, author of Advanced Principles in Teaching Classical Ballet

Dancers must learn to negotiate a truly amazing range of physical demands to achieve peak performance and avoid injury. Through hours of rehearsal, technique classes, and performances, both full- and part-time professional dancers must be able to move their bodies with precision and grace through an extended range of motion. Moreover, they must weather the physical stresses of touring, teaching, and, in many cases, working a second job to supplement their income.

An accomplished dancer and gymnast himself, Tom Welsh wrote this book to empower conscientious dancer-athletes to take an active role in directing their own training and development. His clear, straightforward explanations of important concepts in conditioning hone in on the physical capabilities that are key to success not only for dancers but also for gymnasts, ice-skaters, and other athletes for whom strength and flexibility, precise alignment, and movement efficiency are high priorities. With an expert's eye, he distills complex insights into human kinetics into a format that is immediately useful.

The applicability and accessibility of Welsh's approach has been extensively tested in his many classes and seminars across the country. Precision athletes who are serious about avoiding injury, improving fitness, and increasing physical capability will find this comprehensive yet concise reference invaluable.

Great book!
By L. Keith Miller
This book is great for learning a wide variety of skills that improve strength, agility and grace. The listing of capacities necessary for professional dancers is clear and to the point. The principles of conditioning represent an excellent guide for the careful shaping of the necessary capacities. The sugestion to use RICER to treat injuries is very helpful. The precise description of the complex subject of proper allignment is clearly presented and illustrated. The rules for warm-up and cooldown before practice should help avoid injuries. The suggestions for reducing emotionally induced tension should also help to avoid injury. The complex issues relating to healthy eating are basically sound but could have used a broader framework. The catalog of exercises at the end of the book is clear and accompanied by excellent illustrative photos. Finally, I applaud the author for soliciting feedback from his readers on confusing explanations or ways to improve future editions of the book.

A great book for basic or advanced dancers that recognize how important is to supplement dance classes with extra exercise/stretches. This would also be a great source for teachers to better instruct their dance students. It also has great research paper quality.

A good, quick read. Anyone dancing for more than a few years will know most of this info already, but still a great review and a resource for younger or less experienced dancers.

Trout: A True Story of Murder, Teens, and the Death Penalty, by Mr. Jeff Kunerth

A haunting tale of teenage murderers, mistaken identity, and a brutal justice system

"In the tradition of Truman Capote 's In Cold Blood, Kunerth's Trout is seductive, repulsive, and compelling. I read it in one sitting. How fascinating is Trout? I begged my wife to read the first ten pages, and she, too, was hooked."--Gary R. Mormino, author of Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams: A Social History of Modern Florida

"Kunerth skillfully provides a narrative, dramatic understanding of adolescent immaturity, the tragic consequences when it goes awry, and the chilling disconnect between our social constructions of adolescent immaturity and the harsh consequences awaiting teens in our criminal justice system."--Robert Kinscherff, Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology

On a cool Pensacola night in January 1991, just a few minutes before midnight, three teenagers pulled up to the Trout Auto Parts store. Patrick Bonifay, his body coursing with adrenaline, entered the store clad in a ski mask carrying a loaded gun, intent on carrying out a poorly laid plan. Little did he know that it was his life--as well as the lives of his companions--that was about to be forever changed.
Bonifay, Clifford Barth, and Eddie Fordham were hired to kill Daniel Wells by Robin Archer, who blamed Wells for losing his job nine months prior. The plan was orchestrated by the then-twenty-seven-year-old Archer, who allegedly promised his seventeen-year-old nephew, Patrick, a suitcase full of money after the job was done. But Wells had called in sick that night, and an innocent man was covering his shift.
In this shocking and thought-provoking volume, Jeff Kunerth recounts the events of that fateful night, the swift investigation of the murder, the trials and sentencing of the teens, and their subsequent lives within the Florida court and penal systems. Kunerth uses the story of the Trout Auto Parts murder and the lives of these boys to explore varying aspects of troubled adolescence, impulsive actions lasting but moments, and the national trend of trying juveniles as adults in court.
They were boys every teenager can identify with and circumstances every parent fears. Their story provides a disturbing, sad, and compelling inside look at the dynamics of individuals--not yet adults, but no longer children--who commit senseless, impulsive crimes. Trout is that rare book that continues to haunt you long after you've finished reading it.

From Booklist
The practice of trying juveniles as adults and forcing them to serve the same terms as adults, often referred to as act negates age—an approach that has been adopted by a number of states since 1978—takes center stage here. Kunerth, a journalist with the Orlando Sentinel, dissects a murder-for-hire plot at Trout Auto Parts in Pensacola, Florida, in 1991, that ended with the wrong victim dead and with three teens on death row (two of whom just sat in the getaway car while the third committed the murder). At one level, this is superb beat reporting; Kunerth brings the two worlds of genteel Pensacola and nearby, busted-out Brownsville to vivid life. At another level, the book offers a vivid, In Cold Blood–like examination of a crime gone wrong and its aftermath. On the deepest level, though, Kunerth writes meditatively about what it means to be a young person with very few opportunities and a lifetime to regret what happened in just a few minutes. This is both a gripping true-crime story and a powerful argument for overturning the wrong of juvenile sentencing. --Connie Fletcher

From the Inside Flap

On a cool Pensacola night in January 1991, just a few minutes before midnight, three teenagers pulled up to the Trout Auto Parts store. Patrick Bonifay, his body coursing with adrenaline, entered the store clad in a ski mask carrying a loaded gun, intent on carrying out a poorly laid plan. Little did he know that it was his life—as well as the lives of his companions—that was about to be forever changed.

As the events unfold with the inevitability and harrowing intensity of a riveting novel, Kunerth shares the perspectives of the teenagers and adults involved in the story every step of the way. Thus unique among other case studies of adolescent crime and punishment, Trout will likely give rise to further debate on the legal and moral issues that continue to plague our juvenile justice system.

Bonifay, Barth, and Fordham were boys every teenager can identify with, trapped in circumstances of their own making. The fate of Billy Wayne Coker, killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, is one feared by almost anyone out alone late at night. The story of these intersecting lives provides a disturbing, sad, and compelling look at the dynamics of individuals—not yet adults but no longer children—who commit senseless, impulsive crimes. Trout is that rare book that continues to haunt you long after you’ve finished reading it.

Jeff Kunerth is an award-winning journalist with the Orlando Sentinel. He is also the coauthor of Florida’s Paved Bike Trails.

From the Back Cover

“In the tradition of Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, Kunerth’s Trout is seductive, repulsive, and compelling. I read it in one sitting. How fascinating is Trout? I begged my wife to read the first ten pages, and she, too, was hooked.”—Gary R. Mormino, author of Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams: A Social History of Modern Florida

“Kunerth masterfully navigates a complex intersection of youth, murder, justice, and emerging science. He unflinchingly takes the reader beyond the media, the trial tactics, and the court opinions to inquire about the nature of justice in the face of tragedy and youthfulness. What emerges is a compelling portrayal of a murder, adolescence, and our collective ambivalence about our children when they commit grave wrongs. A ‘must-read’ for anyone intrigued by questions of justice, the social construction of adolescence, or the turbulent dynamics of murder.”—Robert Kinscherff, Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology

Absorbing and well-written
By Kristin
Jeff Kunerth's skill as a reporter is wonderfully evident in this beautifully written and meticulously researched book about a sad, senseless murder committed one long-ago night by three foolish young men -- and the consequences that followed. Narrative nonfiction is always tricky to write well, but Kunerth pulls it off wonderfully with this perfectly paced novel. If this were a newspaper feature, I have no doubt it would be up for a Pulitzer. I couldn't put it down! A relatively short, very meaningful read; highly recommended.

A Riveting Cautionary Tale
By Candy Dawson
The author took me deep into the lives of the teens who committed a heinous and ridiculous murder in such a way that I cannot get them out of my mind. Kunerth's creative nonfiction gives the reader a taste of each boy's family life, his need to fit into a group--any group, his naive bravado and recklessness and finally his evolution moving into middle age behind bars. We have all known boys like this. Turns out our parents were right when they said not to hang around with the wrong crowd. In Florida, that can get you a life sentence even if you are just an unwitting hanger-on. The teenage brain is on trial on many levels in Trout. The debate about how old you must be to be sentenced as an adult and the way it is handled from state to state and nation to nation comes down to this--it varies. What does not vary is the fact that the human brain takes a long time to form in the areas of impulsivity, reasoning and consequences. Add to that the increase of violent behavior when in groups and you find a powder keg of potential explosives during the high school years. Teens with absent or abusive families and a sense of hopelessness think they have little to lose. This cautionary tale should be read in middle and high schools across the country. And...if we can be a positive influence in a young person's life--let's do it.

Nine Florida Stories

"A collection of tales boiling with real estate dealers, egret poachers, rumrunners, mango growers, sportsmen, land grubbers, murderers, and mosquitoes. First printed in The Saturday Evening Post during the 1920s, '30s, and '40s, these stories constitute a rip-snorting glimpse back to a South Florida that now exists only in memory."--Miami Herald

"Reflects the same concerns found in her better-known non-fiction work--a fascination with the beauty of Florida and a warning against its imminent destruction."--Tallahassee Democrat

The subjects that would fire Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s enthusiasm for the rest of her life first appeared in her short fiction published in the 1920s. Florida’s most celebrated environmentalist, the author of The Everglades: River of Grass, wrote even then about protecting South Florida’s fragile ecosystem and the state’s endangered species, about the dangers of short-sighted land development, and about Florida history.

The nine stories in this first collection take place in a scattering of South Florida settings--Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, the Tamiami Trail, the Keys, the Everglades—and reveal the drama of hurricanes and plane crashes, of kidnappers, escaped convicts, and smugglers.

Editor Kevin McCarthy relates each story to Douglas’s life and points out the autobiographical touches which surface frequently in her stories.

The nine stories in this first collection, satisfyingly diverse in plot and theme, take place in a scattering of South Florida settings--Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, the Tamiami Trail, the Keys, Hillsboro Inlet, the Everglades. In among the drama of hurricanes and plane crashes, of kidnappers, escaped convicts, and smugglers, Douglas plants flags that mark the stories as her own: plume hunters who threaten Florida's ibises, irrational schemes to drain the Everglades, what happens when human beings collide with nature in the form of water, weather, or wildlife.

This Marjory was similar to my other favorite, M
By Patricia anne Hansen
This Marjory was similar to my other favorite, M.K. Rawlings. You could see the old Florida. You felt the suspense she intended in some stories. Her flowery language gave you a visual account of how beautiful Fla. once was: skies full of birds, quiet, mysterious. Her depiction of the hurricane made you feel you were there and hoping for the family's safety; her "Plumes" story made you angry, as we should be, of our massacre of egrets, etc. for fashion. I highly recommend this book for lovers of early Fla. history and ecology.

Mark Lane's columns are a hoot
By LKM
As someone who lived in the Truly Odd Place called Florida for a bunch of years I can tell you that Mark Lane's columns are a hoot (And if you don't know what sandspurs are...you clearly haven't lived in Florida.) Reading this book, you can practically feel the humidity. This is the kind of book you can keep on your nightstand and read a chapter at a time. A pleasure.

Hilarious Look Inside the Real Florida
By Sunni DeNicola
This book is a compilation of the hilariously insightful columns of Daytona Beach News Journal writer Mark Lane. Florida, of both the past and present, is a hard place to explain...one that tourists don't often get a sense of until they decide to move there. His columns reveal this odd, quirky, wonderful place...a world of hurricanes, alligators, bugs the size of shoes, NASCAR devotees, over-zealous developers, misguided tourists and cartoonish politicians. I LOVE his survival-of-the-fittest Darwinian Gardener who, unlike most, makes no attempt to tame a yard born to be wild. A must read for any Floridian, or would-be Floridian!

Sandspurs, notes from a costal columinst
By Judy A. Ray
I laughed out loud and had to read portions to my husband because I got so tickled. Living in Florida for the last 53 years I could relate to many of Mr. Lane's stories! Loved the I-4 parking lot. My son travels up and down I-4 and I know he can relate to the Thanksgiving travel story. You will enjoy Mr. Lane's sense of humor and history of old Florida. Before it was illegal my brother tried to raise a gator in the wash tub in our backyard, so glad it got away. This is a great book and will remind you or show you the beauty of Florida. Enjoy!
