About the Author
Phyllis Mauch Messenger, editor of The Ethics of Collecting Cultural Property, serves as grants consultant for the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Minnesota and was the founding director of the Center for Anthropology and Cultural Heritage Education at Hamline University. George S. Smith recently retired as associate director of the Southeast Archaeological Center. Together, with Hilary A. Soderland, they serve as cochairs of the Heritage Values Interest Group of the Society for American Archaeology.

A Very Useful Reference

This is a very useful reference book that's long been needed. Of course there are elements with which to quibble, and no doubt each of us who specializes in the heritage of a particular country will take issue with aspects of the ways our countries are portrayed. Since each chapter necessarily reflects the perspective of its particular author or authors, each has to be taken with a grain or two of salt. As usual with books on this topic, there's ambiguity about just what "cultural heritage" amounts to -- it means different things to different authors. And of course the synopses will soon become dated. But for right now, and understanding that no book of this type can be a perfect, comprehensive compendium, it's great to have this book to refer to as at least a starting point in understanding the heritage management systems of the world's nations.
