From the founding of Ybor City in 1886 to the dispersal of Tampa's Latin population in the years following World War II, this book documents the history of the Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants who created the cigar industry in Tampa and the extraordinary multi-ethnic community that flourished around it. Over 200 photos capture this community's personalities and way of life while commentary drawn from newspaper accounts, oral histories, and archival documents identifies and explains each photograph's historical place and significance. In linking the photographs with historical text, the authors allow the cigar workers to tell their own story, in the language of their day.

The rich photographic record around which the book is organized documents the lives of the immigrant cigar workers not only in the workplace but also in their vibrant neighborhoods in Ybor City and West Tampa. Highlighting the diversity of the cigar workers' community, the book depicts the making of cigars, the work culture, local support for the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898), unions and strikes, community institutions such as mutual aid clubs, leisure activities, and social practices surrounding courtship, marriage, and death.

Focusing on the public spaces of work and society as well the private sphere of the home, Tampa's Cigar Workers tells an inspiring and deeply moving story of how immigrant cigar workers from Cuba, Spain, and Italy carved out their space in Tampa while struggling to survive economically and defending their ideals and way of life.

About the Author
Ingalls, professor of history at the University of South Florida, is the managing editor of Tampa Bay History. He has written extensively on southern history.

Louis A. Perez Jr. is J. Carlyle Sitterson Professor of History and director of the Institute for the Study of the Americas at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the author of many award-winning books, including"On Becoming Cuban: Identity, Nationality, and Culture" and "To Die in Cuba: Suicide and Society" (both from the University of North Carolina Press).

priceless!

Some members of my mother's family left Spain for Cuba and finally settled in Florida...Tampa and Key West. I recently gifted my 64 year old cousin with this book after recent surgery. He is a cigar aficionado and the only magazines and books in his home seem to be about cigars. I gave him this book and one on cigars and upon his opening this book there was no stopping the conversation about our family. It was a wonderful 2-1/2 hour visit and it certainly cheered him up. When I called the next day his wife said he hadn't put the book down yet.

Our family is rich in history in Tampa. I was born in Ybor City and still visit there frequently even though I am about two hours away. Its still home. My grandmothers, grandfathers, great aunts and great uncles were all cigarmakers. My grandmother Elisa Simon was still handrolling cigars in Ybor City when she passed away in 1989. Even though most of the older generation in my family are all gone, books like this still bring the memories rushing back.

This book is indeed priceless. I think its the best gift I have ever given anyone judging by its reception. I'm glad I chose it.

suprisingly content-rich

These kind of books are usually full of great photographs with very little explanation of what they display. I was expected the same with this book, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a good amount of actual context and content along with the photographs.

This is a great read + a perfect coffee table book for anyone interested in Tampa / Ybor City history. It serves as a perfect companion piece to another recent history of the area, the more informative Frank Lastra's Ybor City: The Making of a Landmark Town.

Another fine book

Ingalls is an historian's historian. For anyone researching the long, conflicted, and complex era of cigar manufacture in Tampa this book is a must. There has been a tremendous amount of sentimental verbiage churned out - even from so-called history scholars - about Ybor City in those important decades when cigars provided 50% of neighboring Tampa's payroll. Ingalls' work has always been valuable for stripping away the nostalgia and realistically displaying the area, the era, and the roles that tobacco trade labor played in both.

About the Author
George Saunders is the author of eight books, including the story collections Pastoralia and Tenth of December, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. He has received fellowships from the Lannan Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 2006 he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. In 2013 he was awarded the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story and was included in Time’s list of the one hundred most influential people in the world. He teaches in the creative writing program at Syracuse University.

Disclaimer - this is just a published version of a commencement speech given by Saunders in 2013, and is still widely available on the web for free.

The speech is fantastic though, and this is a great "gift" book.

Best Commencement Address Ever

As graduates begin their careers, what should be at the top of their list? Saunders says it's to never let a chance to be kind go by unfulfilled. And he says it beautifully.

Saunders is right. If I had to name the happiest people I've met in my life and that I remember with the most fondness, it would be those who were consistently kind to me and to others.

If I could choose the legacy to leave when I depart this world - the way I'd like to be remembered, it might be "He was always kind" (I'm sure it won't be).

Saunders gives us the inspiration to be kind and a few suggestions as to how. Not bad for only a few words.

coincidence?

This is a little book I read in one brief sitting while sipping a Starbuck's grande low fat iced latte. It struck a powerful chord in me, echoing my own experience having arrived at the age of 75.
I then got in my car, surfed satellite radio for music, medical advice, whatever, and chanced upon someone being interviewed on NPR. As I listened, I was amazed to figure out that the person being interviewed was George Saunders talking about this very speech!!! Powerful positive reinforcement! I'm going to give this book to my daughters, grandchildren and close friends . . . and read it again . . . and again . . . myself!

*Starred Review* Number 14 in the Travis McGee series starts slowly—unless philately is your thing—but quickly picks up the pace, leading to a vintage MacDonald climax that evokes the classic Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck film Cape Fear. McGee is reluctant to get involved in an aging stamp dealer’s problems—inexplicably, a client’s $400,000 stamp collection has been switched with one containing far less valuable material—but the dealer is an old friend of Trav’s pal Meyer, and, in the end, Meyer usually gets what he wants. It doesn’t hurt that one of the dealer’s assistants is Mary Alice McDermit, a six-footer nearly as fit as the legendarily flat-bellied McGee. As Meyer cogitates over how the locked-room switch could have been engineered, McGee noses around the client, one Frank Sprenger, who turns out to be a money launderer for the Miami Mob. Series fans will immediately see that Sprenger does more than the laundry—the cut of this guy’s jib (and the width of his shoulders) clearly indicates that Travis has found his adversary. No one is quite what they seem this time around—Mary Alice and Sprenger, especially—and it takes Trav quite a while to put the pieces together. Cut to the Busted Flush, run amok deep in the mangroves, as Trav lays in wait for a predawn visit from Sprenger, on his way, like Mitchum in Cape Fear, to settle scores once and for all. MacDonald writes terrific climaxes—it’s always McGee versus the sociopaths, often with a new wrinkle or two (this time the sociopath is holding Meyer hostage), but as good as the climaxes are, the denouements are almost their equal, delivering postmortem details on the conflagration and showing off Trav’s scars. This time the wounds cut deep, into both Meyer and Trav, but, whereas the former shows that he can play in the hard guys’ league, the latter proves that his rawhide body isn’t quite as vulnerable as we assumed (“I felt as if I was made of cornflakes, stale rubber bands, and old gnawed bones”). This is A-list McGee—and not just because it may be the only time in the series when MacDonald describes his hero in terms that could apply to my own cornflake-brittle frame. --Bill Ott

Complex

This is a Travis McGee mystery. McGee is lured off his boat by a friend whose stamp dealer friend is in trouble. The dealer constructs stamp collections as investments for rich clients. One day, the dealer noticed that the stamps in one of his client's collections had been switched with low grade specimens, significantly downgrading the value of the collection. He's terrified that the client will ask to cash in the collection, leaving him with an overwhelming financial liability. He asks McGee to help him figure out how the stamps were switched, and who did it. Complicating the matter is the dealer's secretary, who McGee finds himself mysteriously attracted to.

This story is rich with detail, and it can be hard at times to keep it all straight. The plot goes over the edge of plausibility in places, and the ending has an odd twist that I still can't figure out. Nevertheless, the story remains engaging throughout, and can provide a bit of entertainment or distraction for a little while.

Of stamps, women, and introspection.

Travis McGee embarks on another of his trademark "salvage" missions involving a fortune in missing rare stamps. McGee's ruminations on people, relationships, human aspirations, money, politics, etc. are amusing social commentary, albeit thirty years later. Some of the observations of life in the '70s seem dated, but not enough to matter. Beyond this slight quibble, there is the vicious killer, and the complex mystery of the missing stamps. In addition, we have Mary Alice McDermit, a dark-haired giant of a woman with a healthy sex-drive and a troubled past. The lovable Meyer is present, still pontificating on economics and human foibles. As mystery-suspense novels go, the Travis McGee series is a perennial favorite. John D. MacDonald stresses introspection and character development rather than blood and thunder action. The typical Florida setting is exotic. Altogether, good lightweight reading material for summer vacations or anytime. ;-)

After the Fall

A more pessimistic MacDonald (and McGee) emerges after a writing hiatus of some years. The difference between earlier McGee stories and the 'new' series beginning with Scarlet Ruse is palpable to the devoted fan but not necessarily objectionable: McGee is growing older and so are we; not simply closer to the bone now (McDonald could always take us there) but closer to the end. Yet McDonald's exploration of a free life amidst its war with self and the criminal mind still entertains and instructs. We are not through yet and neither is our favorite beach-bum. See you in Lauderdale.

Strauss (The Real McCoy) readily acknowledges the problems of writing about this event, the result of a moment's distraction-trying to avoid aestheticizing reality, questioning his own self-involvement, admitting to playing a role of contrition, even remarking that "...tragedy turns a life into an endless publicity tour, a string of appearances where you actually think in words like 'tragedy'"-yet a discomfiting tone pervades, and some of the author's concerns, such as those related to public perception, may alienate readers. Amazing Book that Literally Made My Heart Beat Faster

WOW -- STRONGLY RECOMMEND!!!! I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advance copy of this memoir by Darin Strauss, and it is incredible. Almost TOO incredible -- while I was reading the first chapter, which describes the author's car accident, my heart started beating really quickly! I've never had that reaction to a book before -- and it seemed to give me a tiny glimpse into how overwhelming the whole experience that the book describes must have been for the author. Fortunately, I calmed down and finished the book in one sitting and it was riveting.

The book starts with the accident: The author, in high school, is driving his father's car when a classmate swerves in front of him on her bike. He knows there is nothing he could have done and the police confirm that. But it is hard for people in his hometown to cope with the idea that this was just a senseless, meaningless accident -- no one likes to think that our lives are out of our control; we are more comfortable with assigning fault or at least ascribing some kind of significance.

So the girl's mother tells Darin that he is living for two now, and that he has to do everything twice as well now. She seems to mean well -- to offer a way for Darin to be able to somehow make up for, or at least respond to, the accident -- but instead she places a heavy burden on him. Maybe she tried to forgive him and couldn't -- for later (no spoiler here, since the book cover discloses it) she and her husband sue Darin. But perhaps the lawsuit doesn't take the heaviest toll on him -- maybe the heaviest toll is taken by Darin's inability to get close to anyone he meets after the accident: "My accident was the deepest part of my life and the second deepest was hiding it.... By now the camouflage had become my skin." Confessing doesn't help either: "Even the truth had a lie's sourness."

The book is beautifully-written, impossible to put down, and significant for all of us hoping to figure out the meaning of our lives and to decide what -- and whom -- we are responsible for.

The Day My Friend Died

It was a sunny day, not to be taken for granted in a place like Long Island, New York, in May 1988. My friend Celine was biking with a friend. She was training for a bike trip our youth group was planning, when she was struck by a car and killed. The driver was a classmate of hers, and since we went to different schools, I didn't know him. Celine always wore bowling shoes, and was outgoing, friendly and very religious. When, just days before the accident at a youth group meeting I didn't attend she announced "I'm not afraid to die. It could happen tomorrow and I'd be OK with that", her words seemed foreboding, and almost as if she'd beckoned death to her door.

When the accident was described in hushed whispers in the funeral home, she was said to have been biking in heavy traffic and there was just nowhere for the car to go but into her. I developed an irrational fear of biking, and of being fully satisfied with life, but I wasn't extremely close with Celine and life moved me forward from that day.

Last week I noticed an article about an author I'd read. He had a new book out, and I quickly clicked on the link, anticipating another historical fiction (a genre I love). As I read his interview I felt a falling sensation, like the world was shifting. Darin Strauss, author of Chang and Eng, a book I loved, wrote a memoir about killing Celine. Darin Strauss was the driver that day, and while I moved on from my friend's death Darin (and her family I'm sure) was left with the wreckage.

His book "Half a Life" begins with the accident, in which she inexplicably swerves into him and follows him through college and young adulthood where she haunts his conscience on a near daily basis. Learning more of her story (and his story) was a profound experience for me. As I read it I realized Celine did not beckon death to her door, she ran through that door on her own, and maybe bicycling is not as dangerous as I let myself believe.

A Great Memoir

I had the privilege of having Darin as a writing professor, and after reading his new memoir, I am even more proud to say that I studied with him. This story reads like a memoir and a personal essay, and is not only heartfelt and brave, but delves deep into the author's mind. I read it in one sitting, and will read it again, for the beautiful language, the story, and the epiphanies.

Contrary Motions

This is one of those books about halfway through I had the realization I was enjoying it. Sounds a bit odd I know. But the writing was quite engaging and the everyday in the life of an everyman approach just hit the right spot for me at the right moment.

Matt was an interesting lead. He also is a bit frustrating and I think the mix of mundane life and almost crushing disappointments in his life probably doesn't make this everyone's read. What is more I think it might be one of those books that has to hit you just right. Right mood, right moment to be able to relax in it and just savor the simplicity of the writing style that manages to still be rich and detailed.

Mozina captures well the balance of the bitter realizations that can stack up all at once as to where one's life has gone and the struggle to figure out if somehow it can go in another direction and what it takes to make that happen. But this is more of a reflection and survival book and not some feel good all things wrapped up tidily in the end with complete and utter redemption. It starts off slightly messy, like most lives and manages to wipe up a few spots here and there even as it makes more. What lies at the heart is simply a novel about one life in a particular moment that is relatable in many ways.

The stuff of life - or Lifetime TV movies? - A good read. Funny, entertaining, moving

When I started reading Andy Mozina's first novel, CONTRARY MOTION, I thought, Well this isn't very heavy stuff. It's more of an 'entertainment' in the romantic comedy vein. Turns out I was wrong. Turns out it deals with some pretty serious stuff, the kinda stuff that life is actually made of.

Matt Grzbc, a Chicagoan still a couple clicks south of forty, is the recently divorced father of a six year-old daughter. He's seeing another woman, but seems to be still in love with his ex. And his father, who he was never very close to, has just died. He has a congenital heart murmur which causes frequent debilitating dizzy spells, and, to top things off, he's been having some impotence issues. Oh yeah, and besides all this, his career choice is an extremely odd one. He's a harpist, and, of course, everyone knows that the harp is a 'woman's instrument.' But Matt took up the harp as a boy. I was going to say he "fell in love with the harp," but there's this rather Portnoy-esque scene involving a harp and an eighth-grade Matt, so ... Anyway, the driving force of the book, what gives it momentum, is that, after years of subsisting on makeshift jobs - playing hotel brunches, weddings and parties, and failing auditions for permanent jobs with orchestras - Matt has been invited to audition for the St. Louis Symphony, maybe his last chance. So he is practicing furiously for this, often to the detriment of his familial duties and relationships.

But that initial impression was caused by the fact that, for the first hundred pages or so, things are kinda funny, and I was often reminded of the comic-book character, Sad Sack. I chuckled, I winced, I was 'entertained.' Then Matt accepts a chance invitation to play at a hospice, where he begins to form attachments to certain patients. And that's where things become serious. I've volunteered at hospices and nursing homes myself, and so I know it's a place where you can learn something about life - and death. Matt is initially hesitant about this new gig, thinking -

"And though playing at the hospice will make me sad, it might also be a way to escape my anxieties and corrosive self-loathing ... at least it will be a step in the right moral direction."

And it is. Matt begins to try harder to sort out the welter of confusion and sadness that his life has become. After a near-fatal incident involving his daughter, and some more 'self-loathing' about his ex and his girlfriend, Matt ... Well, let me just say that, although Mozina's wry and quirky sense of humor continues to bleed through, the story does get serious. CONTRARY MOTION (the title derives from fingering techniques for harpists) is not just 'an entertainment.' It reaches toward literary fiction, and nearly gets there. Although I kept thinking, This would probably make a great Lifetime TV movie. In fact, I think that idea even showed up in the story at one point. But in the end, I was not simply entertained. I was moved - by the hospice element in particular, as well as the faltering father-daughter part. It ends up being a damn good read. Highly recommended.

Bentley's association with the New York City Ballet began when she was accepted by the affiliated School of American Ballet at the age of eleven. Seven years later, she became a member of the company. In the fall of 1980, as the winter season opened, she found herself facing an emotional crisis: her dancing was not going well. At 22 she felt that her life had lost direction. To try to make something of her experience, on paper if not on stage, she began to keep a journal, describing her day-to-day activities and looking back on her past. The result is perhaps the closest that most of us will ever come to knowing what it feels like to be a dancer, on stage and off. It also offers memorable glimpses of some notable members of the City ballet, with, at the center, the man whose vision they all served--George Balanchine.

Toni Bentley was born in Perth, Australia, and after moving to Bristol, England, took her first ballet lesson at the age of four. At the age of 18 she became a member of George Balanchine's New York City Ballet, where she performed for ten years. Since retiring from dancing, she has written Holding On to the Air with Suzanne Farrell (Farrell’s autobiography), Costumes by Karinska, and Sisters of Salome, as well as articles for periodicals ranging from the New York Times, New York Newsday, and the Los Angeles Times, to Rolling Stone, Smithsonian, Mirabella, and Ballet Review.

Toni Bentley danced with George Balanchine's New York City Ballet for ten years. She is the author of Winter Season: A Dancer's Journal, Holding On to the Air: An Autobiography (by Suzanne Farrell with Toni Bentley), Costumes by Karin-ska and Sisters of Salome, all of which were New York Times Notable Books. She has written articles for numerous publications including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Allure, and Rolling Stone.

Why isn't this still in print?

Winter Season: A Dancer's Journal is the exquisite chronicle of a ballet dancer's experiences with the New York City Ballet. The dancer, Toni Bentley, claims a certain naivetee, but I don't believe it's innocent ignorance as much as it is simple yearning for experiences she rarely has.
She has a delicate flair for words, and her prose couldn't be any less lovely than her pliees and tondus.
Dancing with a world-famous ballet company is gruelling. The dancers are overworked, underfed, and have little understanding of how the "real world" works, yet it would seem they like it that way. Ballet companies thusly have much in common with military outfits: soldiers and dancers work brutally hard, but have their concerns looked after by the higher-ups. Balanchine is the dancers' general.
With the incredibly long hours and the accompanying mental and physical exhaustion, how did Toni get the time to write this book?
She writes,
"We are hairless. We have no leg hairs, no pubic hair, no armpit hair, no facial hair, no neck hair and only a solid little lump at the top of our heads. Any sign of stubble must be closely watched out for and removed.
"That is not all. We don't eat food, we eat music. We need artistic sustenance only. Emotional, inspiring sustenance. Al our physical energy is the overflow of spiritual feelings. We live on faith, belief, love, inspiration, vitamins and Tab."
Toni eventually does break free of the NYC Ballet machine, but she's drawn inexorably back. After all, as she says, "We live only to dance. If living were not an essential prerequisite, we would abstain."

Wonderful glimpse into an intriguing, demanding world

With "Winter Season," Toni Bentley allows her audience to see a real picture of the incredibly tough, demanding and creative world of professional ballet. We see George Balanchine at the end of the career, and such greats as Suzanne Farrell and Peter Martins. The incredible, difficult, almost insane demands put on the dancers are clearly drawn, as is Ms. Bentley's love for her art. Especially evocative is her struggle with reconciling art with her demanding profession.
Often, artistic memoirs focus on the superstars, the Tallchiefs and Nureyevs, for instance. The view from the corps de ballet is all the more interesting for being so rare. This book is beautiful, wry, humorous and exquisitely-written. I wish Ms. Bentley had written several other volumes.

Excellent, revealing, thouroughly enjoyable

I really enjoyed this book. It gave a wonderful glimpse into the real world of professional dancing. Miss Bentley told this story with beautiful language, her words flowed like water. I found it wonderful to know what it was like to live the life of a dancer, to know the struggles and the victories, the fantasies and the realities. I recommend this book for all who love dance and for anyone interested in show business or simply anyone who enjoys a good read.

This unpublished autobiographical first novel, written in 1928 by the author of The Yearling and Cross Creek, presents an illuminating look at the background and maturation of a writer who went on to pen an American classic. The first quarter of the narrative focuses on Rawlings's domineering, ambitious but spiritually empty mother, Ida, who became an overwhelming force in Marjorie's life. Ida's efforts to produce the girl of her dreams lead her to ignore her second child, a son. When Marjorie is in high school, Ida teaches her how to get dates with the most eligible young men. She's a master of stage-mother antics, which begin to backfire when Marjorie belatedly develops an emotional attachment to her father, Arthur, a school principal turned patent lawyer who frustrates Ida by spiriting his family off to a farm in Maryland. Ida's most serious setback takes place when Marjorie's overindulged ego begins to grow exponentially as she approaches college, threatening to overwhelm her budding literary talent. The constant tug of war between mother and daughter reaches its pinnacle when they pay so much attention to social climbing that poor Arthur dies of neglect from a kidney illness. The combination of two distinctly unlikable protagonists (Rawlings doesn't spare readers the uglier aspects of her behavior) and some stilted prose make this a tough read, but glimmers of Rawlings's promising future emerge in the graceful final passages when Marjorie goes off to live her own life after marrying a man her mother hates, and must come to terms with Ida's growing loneliness. Given what Rawlings went on to achieve, this seminal work constitutes a useful document for those interested in delving further into her unusual life. In response to a contest in 1929, Rawlings submitted a manuscript entitled Blood of My Blood, which was returned to her with a rather terse letter indicating that it "could not hope" to win. Rawlings filed the manuscript away. No mention was ever made of it in her letters, biographies, or bibliographies, and even her editor, the famous Max Perkins, apparently never knew of it. It did not resurface until after her death in 1988. Essentially an autobiographical novel or memoir, the book details the rough and rowdy relationship Rawlings had with her mother, Ida, who comes across as a homely, domineering, and manipulating person. Rawlings struggles with her family as she develops into a gifted but egotistical writer trying to find her way. Only her father comes across sympathetically. The reader will get an early glimpse of a talent that went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for The Yearling and acclaim for her later nonfiction narrative Cross Creek. As most readers will recall, Rawlings is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Yearling (1938) and the autobiography Cross Creek (1942). Her first novel, written in 1928, lay unpublished until now. It can be called a novel only by a generous definition of the term, for it reads like a series of autobiographical essays about family. It tracks the life and times of the narrator's mother from her adolescence to her death. Beneath Ida Traphagen Kinnan's plain appearance lurked a controlling nature aimed directly at her daughter. This "novel" is obviously an apprentice effort: too much is told rather than shown, and the kind of meanness directed at the main character would never have appeared in Rawlings' later work. In addition, the racial epithets used have no place in literature. Basically, then, this novel will find its audience among curiosity seekers, admirers of her two classic books, and literary scholars. Brad Hooper

Should Have Been Published in 1928

This is an autobiographical novel, short, only 170 pages long. It was the first book that Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings wrote and it was rejected in a contest. She never tried to publish it again. It may be that, as she says in the end of this book, that she didn't feel herself mature as a writer at that time and needed to know more of life before she tried to write. The story tells of two generations before Marjorie, her grandparents and her parents. It tells of her growing up at the hands of a narcissistic mother who cared for fame and success and money, things she wanted for her daughter because she considered herself too ugly to ever have them herself. The story begins quite slowly with voluminous adverbs and adjectives. The author herself states in the book that they are her strength. She cites an experience in college when her writing professor compelled her to write a story without any adjectives or adverbs to show that it could be done. From that point on in the book, she leaves most of them out. The story builds to a climax at the end, leaving you wanting to know what will happen to Ida, the mother, and Marjorie, the daughter. It is a typical MKR book, perhaps a little unpolished, but only a little. I think it is an excellent book, with a great deal of insight into human nature, well worth the little time it takes to read it.

Fills in the background for Rawlings' classics

This reminds me of old novels by Grace Livingston Hill or Gene Stratton Porter with the struggle against adverse conditions and conflicts over family values. At times it is heavy going. If this is close to what Rawlings' actual childhood and college years were like, I'm glad I read it before now turning to her classic, Cross Creek. I should get more from that reading with this book as background.

Useful mostly to scholars, students and devoted readers of The Yearling and Cross Creek.

I wish it had included photos of Rawlings as a child and in college and of her family. That would have been a plus.
