In 1861, Union troops seized control of strategically located Key West. In the early 1890s, Key West Cubans helped José Martí launch the Cuban revolution, and a few years later the battleship Maine steamed out of Key West harbor on its last, tragic voyage. At the turn of the century, a technological marvel—the overseas railroad—was built to connect mainland Florida to Key West, and in the 1920s and 1930s, painters, rumrunners, and writers (including Ernest Hemingway and Robert Frost) discovered Key West. During World War II, the federal government and the military war machine permanently altered the island’s landscape, and in the second half of the 20th century, bohemians, hippies, gays, and jet-setters began writing a new chapter in Key West’s social history.

Ogle serves up an engaging chronicle of Florida's most famous key for those who like a little history with their Cuban coffee--or whatever it is that would draw them to the "Island of Dreams." Beginning in 1819, when the island known as Cayo Hueso (or Bone Key) seemed like little more than a coral and limestone reef containing neither fresh water nor arable land, Ogle deftly shows that Key West history is a composite of U.S history, at the same time focusing on Key West's uniqueness (pirates, wreckers, etc.). Much seems to have happened largely because of Key West's peculiar geographic location. Carefully detailed are the changes that have connected Key West to the rest of the U.S and made it the tourist haven that it is today. Ogle doesn't shy away from potentially controversial topics, such as the positive impact of gay tourists on the island and famous resident Tennessee Williams' predilection for young sailors in tight pants. Written with grace and gentle humor, KEY WEST drew me in from the first page. This is not my usual choice for reading but since I'm planning a trip to Key West next year, I wanted to learn about the island's history. This book served it up in perfectly-size proportions, not too academic and yet not frivolous, with old maps and photos and a flowing, easy-to-read narrative that delighted me with splashes of humor when least expected.
In 1924, writer John Dos Passos said Key West was a 'delicious experience.'
I feel the same way about Ogle's lovely book and if the town fathers and mothers haven't given her a key to the city, I sure hope they've given her free lodging whenever she returns for a visit.

Best Source for Understanding

Maureen Ogle's history of Key West is the best single source for understanding this bizarre and remarkable place. Key West is the product of piracy, salvaging, the Civil War, fishing, sponging, turtling, cigar making, shrimping, military involvement, and tourism -- all this the result of Key West's unique position on a coral reef, adjacent to the Gulf Stream, 90 miles from Cuba, 120 miles off the US coast.
Ogle weaves together all the disparate influences of dreamers and planners, run-aways and con men, sailors and politicians who still shape history here on a daily basis. The best way to enjoy Key West is through frequent visits and a reading, and re-reading, of this most helpful book.
