Foraging, Farming, and Coastal Biocultural Adaptation in Late Prehistoric North Carolina, by Dale L. Hutchinson

"A fascinating picture of human adaptation in an area of North America that has been studied primarily by archaeologists . . . [that] provides a new understanding of the responses in health and lifeways in a coastal setting, showing especially the very localized nature of food choices and resource acquisition."--Clark S. Larsen, Ohio State University

"This thoughtful integration of archaeological, historical, ecological, and human bioarchaeological data provides a significant new perspective on the biological costs and benefits of Middle and Late Woodland coastal adaptations in North Carolina. By contrasting inner and outer coastal plain communities in terms of specific features of their dietary regimes, subsistence activities, and patterns of skeletal development and pathology, Hutchinson reveals a breadth of successful adaptive variations hitherto obscured by generalized summaries of Late Prehistoric Native American lifeways in the mid-Atlantic region."--Mary Lucas Powell, University of Kentucky

Dale Hutchinson provides a detailed bioarchaeological analysis exploring human adaptation in the estuary zone of North Carolina and the influence of coastal foraging during the late prehistoric transition to agriculture. He draws on observations of human skeletal remains to look at nutrition, disease, physical activity, morbidity, and mortality of coastal populations, focusing particularly on changes in nutrition and health associated with the move from foraging to farming.

Hutchinson confronts the prevailing notion of a universal agricultural transition by documenting a more variable and complex process of change. Among his notable findings is that skeletal and dental markers long accepted as indicators of corn consumption in fact occur more frequently among coastal foragers than among interior agriculturalists. His research shows that men and women differed not only in their economic roles but in their diets as well, and that outer coastal populations continued to rely on maritime resources without the adoption of corn after A.D. 800, a reliance that almost surely influenced their evolving lifestyle.

None of the data in the book has been published previously, and Hutchinson is generous with tables, figures, and appendixes that contribute significantly to the clarity of his interpretations. The combination of original data, well-supported interpretation, and the breadth of evidence from many categories significantly advances our anthropological understanding of the lives of these first North Carolinians.

Dale L. Hutchinson is associate professor of anthropology at East Carolina University.

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
The New York Times Book Review • The Washington Post • Publishers Weekly

New Hyde Hospital’s psychiatric ward has a new resident. It also has a very, very old one.

Pepper is a rambunctious big man, minor-league troublemaker, working-class hero (in his own mind), and, suddenly, the surprised inmate of a budget-strapped mental institution in Queens, New York. He’s not mentally ill, but that doesn’t seem to matter. He is accused of a crime he can’t quite square with his memory. In the darkness of his room on his first night, he’s visited by a terrifying creature with the body of an old man and the head of a bison who nearly kills him before being hustled away by the hospital staff. It’s no delusion: The other patients confirm that a hungry devil roams the hallways when the sun goes down. Pepper rallies three other inmates in a plot to fight back: Dorry, an octogenarian schizophrenic who’s been on the ward for decades and knows all its secrets; Coffee, an African immigrant with severe OCD, who tries desperately to send alarms to the outside world; and Loochie, a bipolar teenage girl who acts as the group’s enforcer. Battling the pill-pushing staff, one another, and their own minds, they try to kill the monster that’s stalking them. But can the Devil die?

The Devil in Silver brilliantly brings together the compelling themes that spark all of Victor LaValle’s radiant fiction: faith, race, class, madness, and our relationship with the unseen and the uncanny. More than that, it’s a thrillingly suspenseful work of literary horror about friendship, love, and the courage to slay our own demons.

Praise for The Devil in Silver

“A fearless exploration of America’s heart of darkness . . . a dizzying high-wire act.”—The Washington Post

“It’s simply too bighearted, too gentle, too kind, too culturally observant and too idiosyncratic to squash into the small cupboard of any one genre, or even two.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Embeds a sophisticated critique of contemporary America’s inhumane treatment of madness in a fast-paced story that is by turns horrifying, suspenseful, and comic.”—The Boston Globe

“LaValle uses the thrills of horror to draw attention to timely matters. And he does so without sucking the joy out of the genre. . . . A striking and original American novelist.”—The New Republic

Amazon.com Review
Q&A with Victor LaValle

Q. The Devil in Silver is a haunting novel about a man named Pepper who is mistakenly committed to a mental hospital in Queens, and the saga of his attempts to escape. What inspired such an idea?

A. This book began with a personal incident. Ten years ago someone close to me was committed to a mental hospital in New York. (I'm keeping things vague to protect his anonymity.) On my first visit I found him tied to his bed with restraints. The staff assured me he'd be released soon. On my second visit he was in restraints again. On my third visit, when we were alone, I asked when they took him out of those restraints. He looked exhausted. He said, "They don't."

The plot lines and characters didn't come to me until 2010 but the seed of this novel was planted that day.

Q. Gary Shteyngart has called you the "new master" of "literary horror." What is literary horror?

A. It's a genre full of scares but one where the characters are more important than the gore. The Devil of my title is vitally important, but the people you meet inside the hospital are the novel's true concern. Shirley Jackson has been a real inspiration in this vein because she balanced external horrors and psychological depth with perfection.

I happen to be a lifelong fan of horror movies. In certain kinds of horror films the cast is really just meat meant to be chopped up by the monster. In those flicks, fun as they are, the characters are interchangeable and their deaths rarely mean much. But in another kind of horror film the trials characters face, their deaths, do mean something. We care about them and this makes their fates more frightening. The Devil in Silver is a story like that.

Q. Are you thinking of any movies, in particular, that might have the same tone?

A. For sure. Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby is a classic film and seems like "literary horror" to me. That movie is about a woman who is tricked into bearing a baby for the Devil, but really it's a series of frightening portraits: Of New York City in the late-sixties; of the state of being newly married to someone you can't trust; of the wild New York characters living in one building; and even of the spooky building itself, the vast and haunting Dakota. Trapped within all these circles of strangeness is one sane character, Rosemary. That movie isn't chilling because of the scene where an actor wearing furry gloves climbs on top of Mia Farrow. Instead, it's a great work of horror because we care about Rosemary and want her to be safe despite all the forces allied against her. It's the same for Pepper, and for all the other characters in The Devil in Silver. We want them to be safe. We want them to survive. The horror seeps in as we recognize that not all of them will.

"It takes a lot of courage to live for someone."
By DanD
Pepper is a big, simple-minded, but more-or-less good-hearted blue collar Brooklyn guy. Defending the honor of a woman who couldn't care less, he accidentally winds up fighting three cops who, through sheer laziness, admit him to New Hyde Hospital's psych ward for a mandatory 72-hour stay. But on his second night, Pepper is visited by a demonic fiend. Sad to say, it's not an hallucination, as everyone--patients and staff alike--seem to somehow acknowledge the beast's existence. But is it a man? Or is it, as Pepper begins to suspect, the Devil Himself?

THE DEVIL IN SILVER is not your typical horror novel. In fact, in most ways, it's not a horror novel at all. It wears the trappings--monster stalking psych ward patients--but it isn't really ABOUT the monster, so much as it is about its protagonist, the cast of quirky--but three-dimensional--supporting characters. Victor LaValle's novel is equal parts satire, dark comedy, and emotional character study. It has genuine twists and turns that you don't see coming; but it also has avant-garde characteristics such as an entire chapter devoted to the biography of Vincent Van Gogh, or the anthropomorphizing of a rather pitiable rat. Even these latter sections move along flawlessly, thanks to LaValle's expert prose (some sections read like poetry, while at the same time remaining realistic and true-to-life; Langston Hughes and Charles Bukowski come to mind).

This is a clever, funny, haunting, emotional novel. Hardcore horror fans may want to stay away, as you won't get your usual cliched trappings. But for people who like to see real intelligence and wit brought to genre fiction, who like to see such things as monsters and devils elevated to literary-quality status...THE DEVIL IN SILVER is a book you have to read.

Not What I Expected...
By Yolanda S. Bean
This book left me with some mixed feelings. The initial description left me to expect a sort of spooky, monster book all set in a mental institution. I thought it would be a horror-thriller combination. And there were definite moments of creepiness equal to the horror genre. The narrative perspective itself filled me with a different sort of horror - Pepper is checked into the mental institution by the NYPD who find it easier to turn people into this underfunded, understaffed asylum than spend unpaid overtime filling out the necessary paperwork to actually arrest him for the minor altercation.

But the book's narrative perspective (often filled with this type of parenthetical and often humourous omniscient observations) prevented the novel from maintaining its creepy atmosphere. The novel also went off on some substantial tangents - completely summarizing the plot of Peter Benchley's Jaws and the biography of Vincent Van Gogh. The point-of-view, though for the majority of the book aligns with Pepper, made some radical shifts - by the fortieth chapter, the P.O.V. is that of a large, gray rat. The scariness built up in the beginning of the book shifted to more of a social, racial and economic commentary.

Though in the end, Pepper found his purpose, the book had shifted so far from my original expectations that I felt a bit disconnected from it. It is, however, an interesting and surprisingly complex read and one that I may re-visit again in the future.

A Literary Trifecta
By DAC
Pepper is a regular hard working blue collar guy who is know to get in a bit of trouble. Though is most recent run in with the cops has him being committed for 48 hours at mental instiution in Queens, NY on a shoe string budget. Pepper soon finds himself lost in the system and making friends with the other patients, as they struggle to cope with the devil roaming the all and the minds of the residents. What I love about Lavalle's style is his ability to tell it straight, say something profound and make me laugh long and hard. That is a serious literary trifecta. The Devil in Silver is well layered and executed. If you've read Lavalle before this is a must read. If you haven't had the pleasure yet, this is a great place to begin.

Race Mixing: Black-White Marriage in Postwar America, by Renee C. Romano

Marriage between blacks and whites is a long-standing and deeply ingrained taboo in American culture. On the eve of World War II, mixed-race marriage was illegal in most states, politicians argued for segregated facilities in order to prevent race mixing, and interracial couples risked public hostility, legal action, even violence. Yet sixty years later, black-white marriage is no longer illegal or a divisive political issue, and the number of such couples and their mixed-race children has risen dramatically. Renee C. Romano explains how and why such marriages have gained acceptance, and what this tells us about race relations in contemporary America.            Although significant numbers of both blacks and whites still oppose interracial marriage, larger historical forces have greatly diminished overt racism and shaped a new consciousness about mixed-race families. The social revolutions of the 1950s and 1960s (with their emphasis on individualism and nonconformity), the legal sanctions of new civil rights laws, and a decline in the institutional stability of marriage have all contributed to the growing tolerance for interracial relationships. Telling the powerful stories of couples who married across the color line, Romano shows how cultural shifts are lived by individuals, and how these shifts have enabled mixed couples to build supportive communities for themselves and their children.  However, Romano warns that the erosion of this taboo does not mean that racism no longer exists. The history of interracial marriage helps us understand the extent to which America has overcome its racist past, and how much further we must go to achieve meaningful racial equality. Race Mixing will be welcomed as a text for classes in history, sociology, and African American studies.

Dismay at presentation of American history
By A. Bookal
I am appalled by the complete disregard that often occurs on the ACTUAL events of American history. As a biracial woman who is currently doing research for my own degree on this very subject matter, I find it unbelievable that once again the brutal history of lynch mobs committing horrific atrocities towards black men, women and children goes unquestioned by so many. I am happy that Romano was able to write an honest and critical review of a period in time which still resonates.

Black men were often lynched for reasons other than an interracial union, including the attempt at voter participation as well as owning successful businesses. After the Civil War and during Reconstruction, more than ten thousand black men were lynched by "white mobs". Very few were ever arrested or brought to trial for their actions. That's a fact, not a statement issued out of racist motivations or lack of historical study.

Black men were lynched, meaning severely beaten, hung and their genitalia cut off at even the HINT of an interracial union between a black man and a white woman. In 1955 one of the most infamous lynch incidents occurred and was in newspapers and magazines across the nation. Emmett Till, a fourteen-year-old boy who called a white woman "baby" was kidnapped that same day by the woman's husband and brother and was severely beaten and shot. The mother held an open casket because she wanted to show what they had done to her son who made the mistake of crossing the line.

Often, White men raped black women without provocation and these women had no recourse or protection of the law. The sexual exploitation of both black men and women began under slavery through forced breeding and the rape of black women. Law forbidding interracial unions preserved the taboo of interracial relationships and upheld the racial hierarchy in this country.

Romano focuses on Black male/White female unions because it was the most taboo and is still considered the most controversial interracial union. Interracial unions occurred, but they were often outside the bounds of marriage and were not commonly accepted, if and when, they were voluntary. During the early 90s, both white and black people married same race over 90% of the time. The trend has not changed very much since then, although more white men are marrying/dating Asian women. In fact, it is the largest demographic for interracial unions currently.

For anyone interested in this period of time, this is a good read about a subject that is often the source of controversy.

solid nonfiction with a powerful heart
By Lisa
It's rare to find a book that so clearly explores recent social history while moving the reader emotionally. *Race Mixing* discusses the legal, social, and cultural history of interracial marriage, explores ideas of marriage and family in both the black and white communities, and presents the testimony of interracial couples who faced racism and social sanction in addition to all the other pressures inherent in building a marriage. It's these stories, woven so well into the historical context, that give the book its heart. Read it now!

The history of a taboo
By Mark Mills
This book is largely a review of scenes from the lives of perhaps 100 married couples who broke the racial taboos. The scenes range from the holocaust like 40s to the puzzling 90s. In 1940 30 of 48 states held 'Black'/'White' marriages to be a crime. In 1967, 17 states still criminalized marriage between 'Blacks' and 'Whites'. In 1958, 96 % 'Whites' disapproved of marriages between 'Blacks' and 'Whites'.
The 60s were a time of change, though. Between 1960 and 2000, the number of 'Black'/'White' marriages increased by 400%. Between 1860 and 1970, marriages between 'whites' and 'blacks' were a highly emotional political issue. Now, the political debate centers on how to rid ourselves of the taboo. In 1997, 61% of 'Whites' said they approved of mixed marriages. Given America's history of blood thirsty 'White' lynch mobs murdering random 'Black' males, one might conclude something very significant had happened.. The book wonders if the taboo will soon disappear.
The first descriptions of the monster are pulled from the 1930s and 40s. It is horrible. The text will bring many to tears. It is easy to imagine, but hard to believe. Quote by ugly quote, the US government, US judiciary and vast numbers of ordinary people are implicated in this American brand of torture. We start with the story of a war bride coming to America to join her husband. It's the perfect story of an American GI and English sweetheart, but the GI is 'Black' so every 'White' functionary (including taxi drivers) attempt to dissuade our fair Juliet from consummating her desires. The stories only get more and more tragic. One wonders how our heroic lovers persevered.
The next two chapters deal with the immediate post war era. One covers the 'white' attempt to make sure nothing changes. The second looks into the arrival of 'Black'-'White' marriages in traditionally 'Black' extended families. The 'White' reaction is only slightly less holocaust like than the pre-war stories. The stories are not quite as tragic, but still provide a shock per page. The 'black' version is one of ambivalence. This ambivalence will play a bigger role later when it sets the stage for black' interest in maintaining the taboo.
The next three chapters cover the 50s to 60s. In this case, we pick up the notion of a emerging culture of artists, primarily musicians, and rebel intellectuals rejecting conventional society's taboos. Simultaneously, the colleges of America offer debates over various social programs. Meanwhile, the 'Black' soldiers returning from the war were organizing social revolution. Each setting provides case studies for 'Black'-'White' love stories from the era.
As we enter the late 70s we are told the story of 'talking black and sleeping white.' Now that the battle for voting rights had been won, and the Supreme Court has tossed out 'black-white' marriage prohibitions, the white participants in 'black' 'white' marriages suddenly discovered the Black side of the family isn't as ambivalent as 20 years before. If fact, there are some new issues to address. 'Black' pride suddenly emerged. 'Black' women objected the common sight of famous 'Black' athletes marrying 'White' brides.
And, here we end our tale. Oddly confused. The taboo, whatever it is or was, may have mutated!
To conclude, Prof Romano suggests the taboo is too difficult for mere individuals to overcome. "Indeed, interracial relationships today are increasingly being heralded as a sign of the country's success in overcoming racial inequality. Yet, the significance of the transformation that has occurred since the 1940s must be kept in perspective. Although the growing numbers of black-white couples demonstrate that the color line in the United States has become considerably more fluid, to take these marriages as proof that racism has disappeared or that race no longer carries much significance in American life oversimplifies the current racial situation. The taboo against interracial marriage has eroded significantly since World War II, but the increased social acceptance of interracial relationships does not necessarily mean the structural and institutional race inequalities no longer exist."
So, in the end, we are delivered a political message. I guess with something so mysteriously persistent, we all end up grasping at straws. It's kind of a screwy change of pace, but this opens the 'epilogue': Is love the answer?
In short, Prof. Romano answers 'no.' "There is no question that interracial love will become more common and even more accepted as racial barriers erode in American society, but it will take more than love to break down those barriers. Old hierarchies must be dismantled for new attitudes about interracial love and marriage to flourish.'
While interesting, I don't find Romano's political argument well developed. She's got it backwards and her stories demonstrate this fact, old hierarchies are nothing when compared to the force of nature represented by a man and a woman who happen to want each other's company in the most intimate and complete manner possible.
For a version of the 'love solves all' perspective, see Mulatto-Nation. Rather than starting at a 1940s cross burning, Mulatto-Nation starts with a detailed description of white slavery prior to the civil war. According to the book, a majority of Americans are already mulatto, biologically and socially. We just haven't accepted it psychologically.

Want to be sucessful? Learn how to live with your failures!
By Georgia Howorth-Fair
I am listening to the Audible version of this book, and I have to say that I absolutely love it. I have been a psychotherapist for 30 years, and in each story I hear the authors doing exactly what I encourage each of my clients to do - make lemonade out of lemons. Sometimes we have to hear the same message over and over until we get it - how many times did the hygienist tell me to floss my teeth before her vacation replacement told me flossing was like brushing in between your teeth! Duh! How many of the well-known people of our times face their failures and, instead of quitting, decided to keep on going? It is inspirational, and important to share with as many people as possible, not just young people who are graduating from college, which was the original idea for the book. Thanks Katie and all of the people who contributed their experiences. We each have an incredible story, and it always helps to hear how others made their story amazing.

you have to be obsessed with celebrity
By Mindful Mary
I pre ordered this book and received it on Monday. It's "cute". But the advice is shallow. A lot of platitudes with very little true informational advice. If you are a fan of pop culture I recommend it, but if you are seeking real life advice I would pass.

Reads like essays from high school students
By D. Crowe
This book was very disappointing. Though I appreciated Katie Couric's introduction to the book and her introduction to each chapter, they are, unfortunately, the only parts of the book worth reading. The 114 essays from celebrities were very cliched and poorly written; reading "if you work hard and do your best, you can do amazing things!" over and over and over again just got tedious. I would be willing to bet that most high school students could write more interesting advice essays.

A road trip through time down the eastern seaboard

"From horseback to stagecoach, and into the front seat of the family station wagon, Dianne Perrier takes readers on a wonderful journey along the trails, plank roads, and macadamized routes of yesteryear--laying the historical foundation for the I-95 super slab of present day."--Michael Karl Witzel, author of Barbecue Road Trip: Recipes, Restaurants, & Pitmasters from America's Great Barbecue Regions

Stretching from Maine's Canadian border almost all the way to the Florida Keys, Interstate 95 traverses fifteen states, plus the District of Columbia, and links the cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Richmond, Fayetteville, Savannah, Jacksonville, and Miami--to name but a few. At more than 1,900 miles, it’s one of the longest and most heavily travelled (11 million vehicles per year) roads in the country.

For both snowbirds and spring-breakers, I-95 is an escape route to sand and sunshine. Travelers may complain about heavy traffic, poor road conditions, and delays, but as Dianne Perrier points out in this fascinating cultural history of the I-95 corridor, such has always been the case.

The pace of travel--and life--is faster now, so it's hard to imagine that Longfellow was inspired to write his famous poem about Paul Revere by an evening spent at a tavern along the road that would eventually be served by I-95. Perrier reminds us of the profound and mundane events that took place along the

A grand dose of history
By Midwest Book Review
All down the east coast, Interstate 95 is one of the most famous tracks of road in America. "Interstate 95: The Road to Sun and Sand" traces the history of the road, and how it became an icon of many Northerners as the road they take for getting away from the grind of their daily lives. Many have made the road itself the attraction with much to see and do all along the way. "Interstate 95" is a fascinating read of this road, providing a grand dose of history.

I wish I had read Interstate 95 ten years ago on my first trip to Florida. Dianne Perrier's whimsical sense of humor paints a delightful picture of the early sun-seekers and the obstacles they had to overcome in their determined quest to get to a beach. Having read all three of Dianne's books to date, I can only say "when is our next trip and where are we going?"I

A History of the Timucua Indians and Missions (Florida Museum of Natural History: Ripley P. Bullen Series), by John H. Hann

"An extraordinary scholarly work . . . [that] will immediately make everything else written about the Timucua and the Spanish mission system in La Florida out-of-date. This will be the basic scholarly reference for students of Florida history and historical archaeology."--Jerald T. Milanich, Florida Museum of Natural History
"An intricate and detailed portrait of the Timucuan Indians during the European colonial era . . . will undoubtedly stand as the principal source regarding the land of the Timucua speakers for years to come. . . . A classic example of historical scholarship."--John E. Worth, Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Atlanta
When Spanish and French explorers first landed in Florida early in the 16th century, Timucua speakers occupied more land area and were more numerous than any other aboriginal group. This is their first detailed history, a major study that places its author in the forefront of Spanish colonial historians working in the United States.
The Timucua are the only native people of Florida whose language survives in literature in sufficient quality and quantity to permit significant study. Relying on previously unused documents, this account of the Timucua traces their experience from first contact with Europeans to their exile to Cuba in 1763 and their final eradication.
Beginning with the question of their number and their locations in northern Florida and southern Georgia, John Hann examines the Timucua's contacts with various European groups, starting with Ponce de León's expedition. He includes a detailed presentation of their experience under the mission regimes, and covers such topics as the Europeans' descriptions of the people, their language, culture, and political structures, the derivation of their language, and the meanings of their placenames and titles. He also resolves confusion over the extent of the territory of a Timucua subgroup known as the Mocama, and discusses other Florida native peoples who moved into Timucua territory as refugees during the first half of the 18th century.
John H. Hann is the historian at the San Luis Archaeological and Historic Site in Tallahassee. He is the editor and translator of Missions to the Calusa (UPF, 1991) and the author of Apalachee: The Land Between the Rivers (UPF, 1988) and many articles and book chapters.

"This guide is an excellent reference that will be used by birders of all levels. It offers a wealth of information on the more famous birding areas as well as Florida's hidden jewels."--Roger Clark, National Park Service

This easy-to-follow guidebook spans 18 counties in eastern Florida to showcase 136 birding sites from the Georgia border to Lake Okeechobee, including the Jacksonville and Orlando metropolitan areas. The sites, organized into clusters of five to ten, are all within an hour's drive of one another and are identified on individual as well as regional maps. Each site is described from a birder's point of view and includes directions, hours of operation, seasonal birding opportunities, and other information essential for a successful outing.

Unique to the book are 27 essays written by state experts to round out the reader's understanding of issues specific to species and habitats. The conservation needs of each area, bird-watching ethics, and resources for additional information are also covered.

The Great Florida Birding Trail project, sponsored by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, seeks to unify existing and new birding sites on a 2,000-mile trail through the state. It will combine special highway signs identifying Birding Trail sites with a detailed map. The East Florida section, now open and available for use, will be followed by West Florida, Panhandle Florida, and South Florida at intervals of 18 months.

Julie A. Brashears is Birding Trail coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.  Susan Cerulean is a nature writer and interpretive specialist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Poorly organized, outdated
By Giesela
BEWARE this is a 2002 version.
Edit - I just looked at the website and the 2012 East Guide has a Florida Scrub Jay on the cover so whoever is selling this online is selling OLD versions!

As another reviewer posted, this is outdated. You can download the other areas of Florida birding trail guides but not the newest 2012 one because its "too big". This 2002 version is pretty awful.
Hated the organization by bird type clusters, makes it hard to find areas where you specifically will be, you have to constantly scan all the clusters for the name, not even knowing if its included. Viera wetlands was a place that I got a lot of recommendations to go to and it isn't in this booklet that I could find.

Girls of the Factory: A Year with the Garment Workers of Morocco, by M. Laetitia Cairoli

In Morocco today, the idea of female laborers is generally frowned upon. Yet despite this, many women are beginning to find work in factories.

Laetitia Cairoli spent a year in the ancient city of Fes; Girls of the Factory tells the story of what life is like for working women. Forced to find a factory job herself so that she could speak more intimately with working women, she was able to learn firsthand why they work, what working means to them, and how important earning a wage is to their sense of self.

Cairoli conveys a general sense of the working life of women in Morocco by describing daily life inside a Moroccan sewing factory. She also reveals the additional work they face inside their homes. More than an ethnography, this volume is also for those who want to better understand what life is like for a new generation of young women just entering the workforce.

Mind of an Outlaw: Selected Essays, by Norman Mailer

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE GLOBE AND MAIL

Norman Mailer was one of the towering figures of twentieth-century American letters and an acknowledged master of the essay. Mind of an Outlaw, the first posthumous publication from this outsize literary icon, collects Mailer’s most important and representative work in the form that many rank as his most electrifying.

As America’s foremost public intellectual, Norman Mailer was a ubiquitous presence in our national life—on the airwaves and in print—for more than sixty years. With his supple mind and pugnacious persona, he engaged society more than any other writer of his generation. The trademark Mailer swagger is much in evidence in these pages as he holds forth on culture, ideology, politics, sex, gender, and celebrity, among other topics. Here is Mailer on boxing, Mailer on Hemingway, Mailer on Marilyn Monroe, and, of course, Mailer on Mailer—the one subject that served as the beating heart of all of his nonfiction.

From his early essay “A Credo for the Living,” published in 1948, when the author was twenty-five, to his final writings in the year before his death, Mailer wrestled with the big themes of his times. He was one of the most astute cultural commentators of the postwar era, a swashbuckling intellectual provocateur who never pulled a punch and was rarely anything less than interesting. Mind of an Outlaw spans the full arc of Mailer’s evolution as a writer, including such essential pieces as his acclaimed 1957 meditation on hipsters, “The White Negro”; multiple selections from his seminal collection Advertisements for Myself; and a never-before-published essay on Sigmund Freud.

Incendiary, erudite, and unrepentantly outrageous, Norman Mailer was a dominating force on the battlefield of ideas. Featuring an incisive Introduction by Jonathan Lethem, Mind of an Outlaw forms a fascinating portrait of Mailer’s intellectual development across the span of his career as well as the preoccupations of a nation in the last half of the American century.

This provocative collection brims with insights and reflections that show why Mailer is regarded as a great literary mind of his generation.”—Publishers Weekly

From Bookforum
There are about a dozen major essays among the many 'more obscure gems' chosen by Sipiora. Not to knock the 'gems'--most of which, like a pair of 1956 Village Voice columns endorsing Hemingway for president, are very charming-- but a selection that stuck to the major pieces might have served Mailer better. —Christian Lorentzen

Excellent Collection of Essays From Major Writer
By Kevin M. Derby
Norman Mailer ranks as one of the leading American literary figures in the later half of the twentieth century and “Mind of an Outlaw” collects some of his best essays. While Mailer always insisted he was primarily a novelist, his work with the New Journalism and his various attempts at non-fiction are perhaps a more lasting legacy.

Mailer’s wide range of interests is in display in this excellent work including politics, literature, race and American life. Some of these essays are pivotal such as “The White Negro” on urban life and race in the 1950s “Superman Comes to the Supermarket” as Mailer covered the Democratic convention which nominated JFK in 1960. Mailer also shines in some excellent looks at “Huck Finn” and “American Psycho.” There are also some hidden gems including Mailer’s musings on putting Hemingway in the White House, his straightforward account of his patronage of murderer Jack Abbot and a look at Marilyn Monroe.

As with any collection, there are some problems. Mailer’s writings on George W. Bush and Iraq are repetitive and his take on the 1996 presidential election is colorful but seems a little off. Still, this is a book which should reinforce Mailer’s reputation as one of the great American literary figures of recent decades. Jonathan Lethem's solid introduction serves as icing on the cake.

One major caveat. Much of what’s included here has been published in recent years including in Mailer’s collections “The Time of Our Time” and “The Spooky Art.” In many ways, “Mind of an Outlaw” works better as an introduction to Mailer than for readers who are familiar with his work.

mailer- a thinking mans reporter
By robert lewis mitchell
covering high points of mailers essay material from the 1950s to his death- the political arena of the 1960s is the stuff of legend- this kind of political reporting and in depth personality profile will never be topped- the man covered the times like no one else- perhaps only gore vidal or bill buckley would even come close- agree with mailer or not , the man had the most provocative views on sex, politics, drugs- the whole social arena of his times- as a non fiction writer he wrote with courage and conviction. a real heavyweight!

Not always perfect, at times arrogant and combative
By MOD
This is the definitive collection of essays by Mailer that spans his fifty year plus writing career. Not always perfect, at times arrogant and combative, but always brutally honest and always challenging, interesting, and brilliant.
