A Powerful Account of Apalachee History

Dr. Hann continues to generate impressive works on colonial Florida. This account focuses on the native province of Apalachee (near modern day Tallahassee) and details their story from Prehistory to the present. In the book, Dr. Hann incorporates transcriptions and translations of original Spanish documents as well as modern archaeological research. This book is the standard for Apalachee history.

Ann-Marie Moore was finished with the world of men. Her last date had ended when the attorney with whom she’d been set up excused himself from the table, vanished into the café bathroom, and didn’t emerge for three hours. Ann-Marie sat there the entire time, tapping her foot to the beat of the mediocre house band, staring at the double doors with murderous intensity. And when her date finally reappeared, glancing around the restaurant like a five-point buck on the first day of hunting season, he didn’t respond to her calls or whistles. No, he kept on walking, past Ann-Marie, past the table, past the bar, out the front door and into the night. By the time she arrived home at her empty two-bedroom apartment at the end of the evening, her left heel broken, makeup streaked with tears, she realized that, all told, it was the best date she’d had in months.

She was thirty-five years old, carried six thousand dollars’ worth of credit card debt, and owned two cats, one of which she hadn’t seen in weeks. This, predictably, was the male one. She had never been to Paris, though the prior summer she had spent three miserable days in the sweltering Las Vegas heat, and she could count the number of times she’d been truly drunk on seven fingers. Her mother called her every other day, at 8:00 p.m. precisely, and the first question out of her mouth was always whether or not Ann-Marie had eaten. The next question, of course, was about her love life. Most of the time, Mother was spoon-fed a meal of beautiful lies.

For Ann-Marie had worked her way through the visible spectrum of males, finding herself deep in love and lust with men of all races and skin tones. Strong arms, strong backs, skinny legs, wide butts, caramel tones, pale faces; a smorgasbord of masculine delights. But one by one, regardless of their physical differences, regardless of their varying professions, hobbies, and personalities, each and every one of them had a single element in common, a collective trait that both identified and grouped them as members of the male gender: They left.

At the end of the day, after the roses and the chocolates and the sweet whispers in bed, Jason and Miguel and Brian and T.J. and Elton and George and the rest of them found an escape clause in their vows of love and took off into the night. Walter flew the coop at high noon, actually, running out the front door with his jacket thrown over his shoulder, as if he were on a train platform and chasing after the 4:09 Southbound for Atlanta.

So as of Sunday night at 11:34 p.m., Ann-Marie Moore was finished with the world of men, and good riddance to them. After fifteen years of hard dating, her bank account was substantially depleted, her bedframe was cracked in three places, and her self-esteem had found a tight little hole deep down inside some gutter in which to curl up and die. It was enough, and finally, gratefully, it was over.

On Monday morning, flush with the excitement of a new, untested lifestyle, she treated herself to a bubble bath. Called in late to work, told them she had a spot of flu. She ran the hot water, submerged herself, closed her eyes, and drifted off to a world where men didn’t walk out of restaurants and ignore their dates; where men didn’t act like wild animals, treating women like gristle on the bone; where men were, finally, what all of the fairy tales and romance books said they were supposed to be: Men.

And for an hour and a half, it was glorious.

When the phone rang at eleven, she answered it out of habit. Realizing that she was still supposed to be ill, Ann-Marie flopped sideways in the bath, hanging her head off the edge in order to lend her voice the proper amount of nasal stuffiness. “Hello?” she said hoarsely.

“I found him.”

Ann-Marie sat up quickly, water splashing onto the bathroom linoleum. “Excuse me?”

“I found him. I found the man for me.” It was Ellen, always Ellen, three-phone-calls-a-day Ellen, who regularly regaled Ann-Marie with sob stories of her own sordid love life.

“What man?”

“Ulysses,” she said proudly, with a hint of grandeur. “He lives upstate.”

Ann-Marie stood and grabbed for a towel, balancing on her left foot as she tried to lean across the tub. The terry cloth felt good against her bare skin. “You’re being vague, here, Ellen. I’m late for work.”

“Forget work. Call in sick.”

“I did already. I took a half day.”

“Then take a full day. You must get online.”

Ann-Marie clucked her tongue. Ellen was always full of demands, no matter the situation. She was barely able to start a sentence without some variation of the word must. “Why?”

“Because I’ve found paradise, darling. We’ve been looking in the wrong places for years. Go online as soon as possible—I’m telling you, that’s where they are.”

“Who?”

“The men,” sighed Ellen. “All the luscious men.”

They were in front of Ellen’s computer forty minutes later, staring at the screen as the old modem dialed up a connection. “So I’m online, just messing around,” Ellen explained, “bouncing from page to page, checking out links, and I hit this amazing site . . .”

Ann-Marie didn’t own a computer. She hadn’t ever bounced around anywhere, let alone from page to page, and didn’t much care about the whole Internet craze. She thought of it as a sidebar to her life, a state of affairs that, while meaning a great deal to a certain percentage of the population, could just as easily continue its existence parallel to hers, without the two ever crossing.

But suddenly Ellen was talking about websites and search engines and pen pals and then, as if it were the most logical transition in the world, she was on to men. And she was on to Ulysses.

“I wrote him first,” she said, “because that’s how the rules work. You read their profiles, you find one of them that you like, and you e-mail him a message.”

“So there are rules?” Already Ann-Marie was suspicious. If, as she’d decided, she was through with the world of men, then she was through with the world of men, digital or otherwise. Any extra regulations would only complicate matters further.

But Ellen was already online and typing away, slapping a URL into the location box of her browser. In the time that it took for the page to load, Ann-Marie decided that she would listen to Ellen for five minutes, then stand up from the ergonomically correct desk chair and walk out of the apartment, down to her car, and make it back to work just in time for her boss to bawl her out for missing the morning meetings.

That’s when the page fully loaded, and there it was, five inches high on the seventeen-inch monitor, glaring out at Ann-Marie in a bright, gaudy, Web-design-in-a-box font, replete with whirling animation: Prisoners4Love.com

Ann-Marie tried not to laugh. She understood that this was important to Ellen—in the way that everything was important to Ellen—but it was difficult to take seriously. Below the blinking homepage title was a small cartoon prisoner in black-and-white cartoon stripes, peering out from behind small cartoon bars, a small cartoon heart beating in his small cartoon chest. We made mistakes in life, the caption read. Don’t make a mistake in love!

“Armed robbery, if that’s what you’re thinking,” said Ellen.

“They’re all . . . armed robbers?”

“No, that’s what Ulysses is in for. Armed robbery. But he was framed.”

Ann-Marie smiled her best smile—this was her friend, after all—and grabbed her pocketbook. “It’s all fascinating, Ellen,” she said, “but Mr. Saponaro is gonna give me the boot if I don’t get in by two—”

“Sit, sit,” said Ellen, pulling Ann-Marie back into the seat. “Ten minutes. You must try it for ten minutes, and if you don’t find someone fascinating, you can go.”

Ann-Marie looked at her watch. If her car started properly and if traffic held up right, she could sacrifice the time and still make it into the office before the two o’clock deadline. Ellen was a kook, but she was a kind kook, and the least Ann-Marie could do was humor her for a while.

Great fun

"Men Seeking Women" is a genuinely entertaining collection of stories that all, in one way or another, center around sexual relations on the internet (with the curious exception of the last story by Po Bronson which, while good, doesn't seem to have anything to do with the rest of the collection). This is a really strong group of stories that explores the impact of the internet on the interactions between the sexes in a variety of different ways and from a variety of different angles. Some of the stories were better than others, of course, but I particularly liked "Payback Time" by Gary Krist, which takes as its theme the way men develop powerful crushes on enigmatic women they encounter on-line but of whom they know nothing; "Minesweeper" by David Liss, which is about a serial internet liar and how he justifies his awful behavior to himself; "The Face in the Glass" by Paul Hond, which is basically just effective and creepy; and "Prisoners of the Heart" which is, perhaps, not particularly realistic, but a whole lot of fun.

Joseph Anton was the alias that Salman Rushdie chose (a combination taken from Conrad and Chekhov) when he was in hiding, after being 'sentenced to death' after publication of "The Satanic Verses". On a sunny morning in London in 1989, a few months after the book had been published, a call from a BBC reporter changed his life. "How does it feel to know that you have been sentenced to death by the Ayatollah Khomeini?" she asked. With those few words, everything changed for him forever. In his Islington house, Salman Rushdie, understandably, shuttered the windows and locked the door. When he later left for an interview, he had no idea that he would not sit foot in the house again for many years...

This memoir is always totally honest and never less than gripping, especially in the first half of this enormous book. The author discusses his education, family, relationships and his behaviour during those incredibly stressful years with immense openness. During the first two or three years of the fatwa, Rushdie was constantly on the move, reliant on his friends for places to stay. His second marriage was less than a year old at the time and already in trouble, so the stress and intrusion certainly did not help that situation either. The author was criticised, even at the time his life was in danger, by press articles claiming he was costing the country huge amounts of money, the government were imposing limits on what he was allowed to do (including how and when he could see his beloved son) and he was accused of selfishness for wanting to publish a paperback version of "The Satanic Verses" when the lives of hostages, such as Terry Waite, hung in the balance. Eventually, he would almost be blamed for being an author, for writing, for opening his mouth or putting pen to paper.

Salman Rushdie admits frankly that many people saw him as arrogant and unrepentent during that time. He also allows that his need to be loved made him make misguided attempts at conciliation, which he later regretted. He knew little of what was going on - there were vague rumours or threats of hit squads, contracts and assassins, but he was told few details. He was simply moved again - and again and again. His freedom limited and, when he rebelled, he was told simply, "If you want to live, you will move." Much changed for the author, and the world, during that time. There were major world events and huge social changes. Rushdie tells how he wrote his first book on a computer, instead of a typewriter, during those years.

As a book, it has to be admitted, that the first half is certainly the most interesting. I certainly enjoyed reading about his early years and how he strived to become a successful author. The news of the death sentence and how the author reacted to it is certainly both shocking and gripping to read about. This is a very important book for those who recall the furore caused, so long ago, by a novel. I was quite young in 1989, in my first job, and I recall the huge outpouring of rage and hate that swept the country at the time. There was a real threat - bookshops were firebombed around the world and those who had translated the book were attacked (in one case killed). I did doing something I never did then, which was to buy a hardback copy of a book (too expensive on my low wage at that time) and that book was, of course, "The Satanic Verses". As the author says, "The freedom to write is closely related to the freedom to read". As we do not wish to be told what we can read - as we, as readers, feel we have the right to read whatever we want, then authors have to have the freedom to write those books for us. As a reader I am grateful for the stand this author took, which took immense bravery and which he tells with a great deal of humour (his brief attempt at using a wig as a disguise is priceless) and humility. This is a book you will be glad that you have read and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

"It had been about something important"

At a Salman Rushdie lecture that I attended a couple of years ago, a well-intentioned member of the audience asked him to contrast his life during the years when the Iranian fatwa loomed over his head and his now time of freedom. If I recall Mr. Rushdie's words , there were only two: "bad" and "good." This author, beloved by many and still hated by others, has finally told us what his life was like during the decade or so-- the Ayatollah Khomeini issued the fatwa on February 14, 1989 for Rushdie having published THE SATANIC VERSES-- when there was a price on his head by Islamic fundamentalists in his memoir JOSEPH ANTON. (Forced to live in hiding, he chose the two first names of two of his favorite authors Joseph Conrad and Anton Chekhov for his pseudonym.) His one word answer has stretched to over six hundred pages. He has a lot to say.

Mr. Rushdie seems to omit nothing. At times he is angry-- although from where I sit he usually shows remarkable control-- but always honest (about both himself and others, even telling the reader about some of the most intimate details of his marriages) and he never loses his sense of humor, as anyone who has had the pleasure of hearing him speak knows. But what Mr. Rushdie says over and over and what makes his story so important is that freedom of speech, i.e., the freedom both to write and to read is something worth dying for. In his own instance Professor Hitoshi Igarashi, the translator of THE SATANIC VERSES into Japanese was murdered and did pay the ultimate price. Dr. Ettore Capriolo was stabbed; William Nygaard, THE SATANIC VERSES Norwegian publisher, was shot. Both these men survived. While heads of government in the western world were not always so brave, often putting politics over the freedom of writers to publish and publishers caved in to fear-- it was years after the initial publication of THE SATANIC VERSES that a major company in the U. S. would come out with the paperback edition-- writers around the world came to Mr. Rushdie's defense: "I have been given a lesson, in these years, in the worst of human nature, but also in the best of it, a lesson in courage, principle, selflessness, determination and honor, and in the end that's what I want to remember: that I was at the center of a group of people behaving as well, as nobly, as human beings can behave." Practically every major writer spoke out for him. The list is long. Two who did not were Roald Dahl, who called Rushdie "a dangerous opportunist" in print, and John le Carre, who also spoke out against him early on. He and Mr. Rushdie exchanged fire in a series of letters to THE GUARDIAN in November, 1997 after Mr. le Carre complained that he had been called anti-Semitic in the NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW by Norman Rush. "He (Rushdie uses the third person for his memoir) should have kept his feelings to himself, of course, but he couldn't resist replying." Then Christopher Hitchens "joined the fray unbidden" and you can imagine how that fire got fanned. My favorite essayist compared the writer of THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD to someone who urinates in his hat and then wears it-- a bit of comic relief in a very serious book.

Mr. Rushdie, during much of the 1990's lived as a virtual prisoner in the many places he lived with members of the British secret police, whom almost to a person he praises, twenty-four hours a day. He looked forward, however, to his trips to the U. S. where he could move about with more freedom. He was well received here as a celebrity of sorts and met many famous people. One of my favorite stories among many is his account of meeting Meg Ryan when she went into rhapsodies over visiting India, and her love of what Mr. Rushdie calls the "guru industry." He reminded her that if you grew up in India, it was easy to conclude that those people were fakes-- a real conversation stopper. He does describe with great emotion his visit with his son Zafar to the land of his birth after he was finally given a visa after not being allowed to go to India for so many years. When in Mexico City he spoke to Gabriel Garcia Marquez on a telephone call arranged by Carlos Fuentes. Marquez paid him what he says is the greatest compliment he ever received when he said that the only two writers he followed outside the Spanish language were J. M. Coetzee and Rushdie.

Even though Mr. Rushdie lived as a hunted man for so long, he worked diligently to have as normal a life as possible, trying sometimes unsuccessfully to keep writing and spending as much time as possible with his son Zafar whose mother was his first wife Clarissa and with his second son Milan by his third wife Elizabeth. Some of the most poignant passages in the entire book have to do with his descriptions of these two sons. He loves them dearly and it shows. Rushdie has a lot to say about love. When he writes of his beloved mother who would not seek out her first love, her first husband, after the death of Rushdie's father although she lived for sixteen more years alone and never responded to any of her first husband's letters, this brilliant writer reminds us that "sometimes love is not enough."

In conclusion, has anyone described literature and its importance better than Mr. Rushdie? "Literature tried to open the universe, to increase, even if only slightly, the sum total of what it was possible for human beings to perceive, understand, and so, finally, to be. Great literature went to the edges of the known and pushed against the boundaries of language, form, and possibility, to make the world feel larger, wider than before. . . Literature's view of human nature encouraged understanding, sympathy, and identification with people not like oneself, but the world was pushing everyone in the opposite direction, toward narrowness, bigotry, tribalism, cultism and war." He reminds us his fight had been about something important.

We in Atlanta are so fortunate to have this fine writer, whose novel MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN was chosen as the Best of the Bookers of all the Booker Prizes, from time to time pitch his tent amongst us.

Love never came at you from the direction you were looking in.

In 1989 I was in the last year of high school in Tehran. After a break and before the "religion study" (of course), a student wrote in English "Satanic Verses" on the blackboard, since that was the news the night before, and since the phrase sounded cool. I still remember the handwriting. For weeks to come, he wet his pants why he did that. For entering university in Iran, you needed to be cleared by the school that you have pure thoughts and strong islamic belief (definitely not satanic).

Fast forward to 1998, I was a student in Europe enjoying a scholarship to study Science. I started reading the Satanic Verses, just to find out why the grand Ayatollah and the Iranian regime is so keen to kill its author. It took me one non-interrupted year for the first reading (thanks to my full scholarship to do Science). For a science conference I needed to get a visa to Britain (having Iranian passport, you are only qualified to enter Heaven, but pretty much no place in Earth). I am sitting in the British consulate reading my book. I turned back and saw two Pakistanis with long beard (an old and a young guy) sitting behind me. The type who wanted to kill the author. I freaked out having the book Satanic Verses in my hand. I changed my seat so that they can't see what I am reading. Then I realised the British behind the counter now can see an Iranian guy reading the book, wanting to enter the United Kingdom (and probably is familiarising himself with his target).

That was my thought: if a student in Iran wetting his pants for just writing the name of the book and an average guy wetting his pants (both ways) by just having the book in his hand, what would the writer himself must go through?

The book Joseph Anton answers that. It is a brutally honest account of 10 years of hiding. Rushdie writes of the confusion the event created "he realised,..., that he no longer understood his life". He writes about his shame, "While all this and much more was happening (referring to publishers and bookshops bravely continuing the publication) the author of the Satanic Verses was crouching in shame behind a kitchen worktop to avoid being seen by a sheep farmer". And here is why "...the working of Muslin 'honour culture' at the poles of whose moral axis were honour and shame, very different from Christian narrative of guilt and redemption. He came from that culture even though he was not religious, had been raised to care deeply about questions of pride. To skulk and hide was to lead to dishonourable life. He felt, very often in those years, profoundly ashamed. Both shamed and ashamed".

The book is an account of tremendous pressure and assault from all fronts. From his wife, from the British police, tabloids and not to mention the faithfuls and Iranian. "His biggest problem, he thought in his most bitter moments, was that he wasn't dead...He was supposed to be dead, but he obviously hadn't understood that. That was the headline everyone has set up, just waiting to run"... "two shots to the head and one to the chest"...

But the book, 630 pages, is also an account of how he put on a fight. Along the way, how literature and his passion for literature kept him sane, "The greatest danger of the growing menace was that good men would commit intellectual suicide and call it peace. Good men would give in to fear and call it respect."

Throughout the work, Rushdie's humour is present, something he always complained people missed in his work:
A woman asking, "Mr. Rushdie, I have read your novel, Midnight's Children. It's a very long novel, but never mind, I read it through. And my question for you is this: Fundamentally, what's your point?". In a letter to his mother "...an imam wants to ban the 'blasphemous' Barbie doll. Would you ever have thought that poor Barbie and I would be guilty of the same offence?"

The book is long and very detailed. This could become a bit frustrating as one feels giving too much details (nights with friends, going for take away food, etc) could hide the bigger picture. This was accurately noted in a review by Kenan Malik:

"it is in exploring the wider issues of the Rushdie affair that Joseph Anton is, perhaps surprisingly, at its weakest. The memoir is extraordinarily rich in detail. It provides a blow-by-blow account of the meetings, the arguments, the feuds, the emotions. And yet that detail is rarely used to illuminate the big picture, to explore the bigger social, cultural, political and intellectual changes that the Rushdie affair has wrought, or at least symbolised. It was through the Rushdie affair that many of the issues that now dominate political debate - multiculturalism, free speech, radical Islam, terrorism - first came to the surface. It was also through the Rushdie affair that our thinking about these issues began to change. Few people are better placed than Rushdie himself to talk about these changes and to link the details to the historical shifts. Yet, that broader frame is largely missing in Joseph Anton. And without a frame the richness of detail can appear as a case of `one damn event after another'."

I enjoyed reading through the book. One thing is clear: This book is not in the same league as his masterpieces Midnight's Children and the Satanic Verses. There one has a brilliant author who worked on each of the books for 5 years. There, one can feel each paragraph has been worked on, thought about, and researched.

Despite that "he told his friends...his life has turn to a bad novel", Rushdie manages to write a good book out of that!

A Letter from the Authors: What Is a Tool?
In conventional psychotherapy, we talk about “insights” or “causation” and we tend to believe that if we can uncover the deep-seated reasons behind someone’s problems, then the person will change automatically. This implies that awareness alone creates the forces that cause change. But real change, the kind of change patients in therapy cry out for, means changing your behavior, not just your attitude.

That requires much stronger forces. A tool is a technique or procedure that can generate a force that allows you to do the work of change. It is work that must be done in real time. When do we use a tool? In the present.

Conventional therapy tends to be passive and focuses on the past. It excavates a patient’s history, usually from childhood, brings it into the light of day and interprets it so as to strip it of its unconscious power. I have the greatest respect for the past. Memories, emotions, insights can all be very valuable. But my patients needed help and relief in the present and all the insights in the world weren’t going to be powerful enough to deliver that.

To control your actions you need something else: a specific procedure you can use systematically to combat a specific problem -- you need a tool.

There’s an obvious objection that arises here: Isn’t what you’re doing superficial? Sure, these tools of yours may help a patient change his or her behavior but you haven’t addressed the underlying reasons. Unless you do that they’re bound to go back to their (self-) destructive ways sooner or later.

There are two answers to this objection. The first involves a misunderstanding of how people change. Insight into the “reasons” for a problem isn’t the cause of change – it’s the result. Groups like Alcoholics Anonymous have always known this. You don’t join AA and then sit around discussing why you drink too much over a few beers or vodka martinis. You join to stop drinking one day at a time. Only after that can you look into the roots of your addiction by “taking inventory.”

The second answer goes back to our original question about what a tool is. There has been a bias in psychotherapy implying that anything that is active and involves your will is superficial; as if the deepest part of human experience can only occur inside your head. The truth is the opposite; the deepest part of human experience happens when you interact with the world outside yourself. That means you need to go beyond thinking and into “doing”—and this is exactly what a tool makes possible.

Phil Stutz graduated from City College in New York and received his MD from New York University. He worked as a prison psychiatrist on Rikers Island and then in private practice in New York before moving his practice to Los Angeles in 1982.
 
Barry Michels has a BA from Harvard, a law degree from University of California, Berkeley, and an MSW from the University of Southern California. He has been in private practice as a psychotherapist in Los Angeles since 1986.

Tools to Transform Your Life

Stuck in a rut? Feel that life is passing you by? Do anxiety, worry or insecurity hang over like a dark cloud? Obsessing over past hurts and events so that forward movement seems difficult or impossible? If these seem familiar, they are identified as among the most common problems that clients bring to the authors of this book in their counseling practices.

Believing that traditional therapy is convoluted in focusing too extensively on exploring the causes of clients' problems, psychiatrist Phil Stutz has designed an innovative approach which he and psychotherapist and co-author Barry Michels use to help clients overcome problems by emphasizing solutions. They provide tools to their clients to work through these common problems. "The surest way to change behavior is with a tool," they state. Human beings have untapped powers that allow them to solve their own problems they believe. With a combined 60-plus years of working with clients, they have identified four fundamental problems their clients are challenged by. They have field-tested solutions with clients enabling them to develop capabilities and move foward.

These four fundamental problems which keep clients from living the life they want to live:

1) Pain avoidance (out of fear of rejection, failure, and negative consequences) to the extent that clients don't move forward or progress--clients are stuck in a comfort zone in which they aren't achieving their goals, life is passing them by.

2) Unrealistic belief that people will treat you fairly--when this doesn't happen, clients become enraged/hurt and replay the experience, refuse to move forward until wrong is rectified, obsess about the person or event, fantasize about revenge etc.

3) Insecurity based on intimidating situations--leads to difficulty expressing yourself, connecting to others etc.

4) Negative thinking displayed in worry, anxiety, criticism, judgment of others and self-hatred--clients feel like a dark cloud hangs over them and have difficulty enjoying life and creating positive experiences.

The authors' approach to problems is positive--they view problems as "portals to enter the world of untapped potential" and see problems' purpose as primary avenues to growth. They help clients turn problems into opportunities with simple--but not necessarily easy--techniques called tools which change not only attitudes, but behaviors as well. How?

Take problem #1: pain avoidance, keeping our lives small, because of fear of negative consequences and discomfort. Explained simply, the "tool" they teach clients to employ is "reversal of desire" to avoid the pain. They show clients how to embrace the pain and forward movement. This universal principle enacts the power of forward motion. Move towards the pain, towards the activity you have been avoiding. It's a think-do approach. Thinking is not enough, clients have to do or act. This enacts power and energy which support you.

Each of the four fundamental problems has a tool to use to create new behaviors which energizes a higher force helping clients to evolve, develop capabilities and experience new possibilities. It matters less what problems you have, than that you use the tools they believe. The tools provide concrete access to the forces or power to solve the problems. Theirs is a spiritual orientation to therapy--not based on any religion or New Age theories, but on what they believe are principles and forces operating in the universe.

Do clients need faith to use these tools? No. Just the willingness and perseverance to apply them. For each problem, a tool is identified, an exercise-action is explained as to how to use the tool, and the higher force or principle is described which operates in supporting the tool. Real life examples of results in their clients' lives are provided regarding how the tool has worked in different situations. There's a helpful summary, and Q & A, on each tool at the end of chapters.

This book won't appeal to everyone. If you believe that the universe is simply mechanistic governed by material laws, matter-based cause and effect alone, you may find this book isn't for you. However, if you believe that growth and spiritual evolution are principles operating in the universe, and that laws and powers exist to support resolving problems and forward movement, then you may be intrigued by the tools the authors have discovered and field-tested through their personal experience and clients' experience. This book offers originality and clarity on using tools and techniques as levers on common problems. I found the book so helpful I read it twice and am implementing some of the ideas in it. At the very least, to the open-minded, you should find it thought-provoking and encouraging.

Rational Emotive Therapy for the Soul

OVERVIEW:
In their book, The Tools, Phil Stutz and Barry Michels introduce a novel method of psychotherapy. By combining elements of Jungian psychology with the kind of practical approach found in Ellis' Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, the authors present a series of exercises that they claim can harness the power of higher forces and affect radical, positive changes in their patients' lives. Per my assessment the exercises that they present are groundbreaking, but my guess is that there may be variable amounts of success for the average reader. I will try to explain what I mean by this below. Nevertheless, the book presents what appears to me to be an interesting, original,and possibly effective method of psychotherapy.

Before I begin, I have to admit that it is difficult to assess this book completely in such a short amount of time. I received the book from the Amazon Vine program for review three weeks ago. I am obligated to write a review, but you must realize that the exercises in the book take a fair amount of practice. I have noticed some positive changes that I will relate below, but I can't say at this point whether this will improve, stagnate, or decay over time. I will try to write an addendum later, if I see any differences over time. Additionally, I was a psych major in college, but I am certainly not a psychiatric professional. I do not have an advanced degree in psychiatry, so I can only give my opinions as a layperson. I think that this is appropriate as the book was written as a self-help manual for the general reader, but please take my comments in this light.

OVERVIEW:
Phil Stutz invented The Tools when he was finished with his training as a psychiatrist. After a number of failures at helping his early patients he felt that the kind of psychotherapy he was trained in didn't offer much to patients that was all that practical. He basically started from scratch and invented The Tools as a way to help his patients with day to day problems, and to his surprise and his patients' satisfaction, it worked. Barry Michels faced the same dilemma, but at a critical juncture in time Michels was lucky enough to attend one of Stutz's lecture. He became the prime student of Stutz and found incredible success using the tools with his patient population. Both have used these tools as the cornerstone of their psychotherapy. The two worked together to refine them and are now the go-to psychotherapists to Hollywood writers and the stars. They are presenting this book to bring their ideas to the general public and to help people help themselves.

The writing style is colloquial. They introduce each tool by discussing a patient vignette. They show the reader how the particular tool works using descriptive language and some simple cartoons that illustrate the principles at a glance. They then tell the reader what cues should prompt you to use a specific tool and how to use the tool. The last couple of pages of a chapter are devoted to a quick summary which is very helpful.

WHAT ARE THE TOOLS?
Without giving away any of the authors proprietary information, The Tools are as follows:

1. Reversal of Desire: A way to overcome avoidance of painful or difficult situations.
2. Active Love: A way to quell anger, prevent yourself perseverating on injustice, or prepare yourself for confronting a difficult person
3. Inner Authority: A way to overcome your insecurities.
4. The Grateful Flow: A way to rid yourself of overwhelming, negative thoughts that hold you back and give you back your sense of control.
5. Jeopardy: A way to solidify your willpower so that you will continue to use The Tools. The Tools are not a one-shot deal. They require an ongoing effort. If you stray off the path you will backslide to where you came from. Tool five keeps you on track.

JUNGIAN CONCEPTS
The above descriptions are sketchy, but you get the idea. The Tools all involve simple, Jungian concepts. A basic way of thinking about them is that we are often trapped in "The Maze"--stuck in negative patterns of thought and behavior that we cannot escape. On the one hand, The Maze is detrimental, as it prevents us from ever escaping from unhappy and unhealthy patterns of behavior. On the other hand, The Maze may disturb us, but the patterns, unhappy and unhealthy as they may be, keep us within our comfort zone. We are constantly distressed by The Maze, but we are also afraid to break out.

The Tools are designed to help us tap into The Source--a benign higher authority in the universe--which gives us the strength to break out of our old patterns of behavior. The Source is that Jungian mystical, spiritual power of good in the universe that unites us and can give us energy. It is the 'Higher Authority,' that "Power greater than ourselves" described in the second step of AA's 12 step program that can restore our sanity. For the religious, The Source is God, but, for the atheist, The Source is just a given. We also must confront our Shadow--a kind of second self that lives inside you. The Shadow is the picture of yourself within your minds eye that is devoid of any of our positive traits. It is the vision of yourself as that simpering, frightened, pimply child that cowers in the corner when you really need to stand up for yourself. By connecting to The Source and shedding light upon our shadow, we can overcome just about any problem.

BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATION OF THE SPIRIT
If all this seems a little mystic and spiritual, it's because it is. The Tools themselves, however, are down to earth and practical. Similar to Ellis' Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, The Tools give the reader a way to correct our recurring irrational beliefs and reorient ourselves with The Source and our Shadow, allowing us to escape the Maze. As complicated as all this may seem, The Tools themselves are simple and straightforward exercises that help us realign our thinking.

By changing the way we relate ourselves to The Source and our Shadow, we banish the irrational beliefs that hold us within The Maze. Our dysfunctional way of relating these elements is the major source of our woes. The important factor here, however, is that this is not once in a lifetime revelation. You need to constantly work at The Tools--it's a job that is never done. If you avoid them, you will slip back into your old patterns and get trapped again.

DOES IT WORK?
After practicing The Tools for three weeks, I have to say that I was very surprised that they have had some positive effects on me. My personal experience tells me that they do, indeed, have the potential to work. Once again, I can't say that I'm at the point where I'm so good at using The Tools that I have had a major life transformation, but the overall the results so far have been positive. Realize that using the Tools is an active and ongoing process. You need to continue to work on them; it is a job that is never done. Stutz and Michels do not promise something for nothing. However, if you put in the effort they do seem to work.

It is hard to tell, however, if these techniques are a good way to go for everyone. No research has been done to assess how well The Tools work. Yes, Stutz and Michels have had great success within their psychiatric practice. This is a start, but remember that most patients will stop using a therapy if they don't feel that it is helping. Patients who stick with a therapy--Stutz's and Michels' included--stick with the therapy because they feel that it works. The patients that continue using The Tools in Stutz and Michels' practices are the ones who are successful. Clinical success is hard to judge in a vacuum. Without research--knowing how many tried The Tools, how many were successful with them, and how many failed--it's hard to make a blanket recommendation.

Using The Tools takes a leap of faith when it comes to buying into the Jungian concepts involved. It also takes a lot of effort and imagination to put work with those concepts and put them into action. I don't think that it is any mistake that many of the authors' patients are larger than life, Hollywood, creative types. These are people who are likely driven to success and are also driven to put these techniques to use. They are also creative and imaginative enough to breathe life into the more mystical concepts.

That said, it's an interesting idea that you really don't have to believe in the reality of The Source for the techniques to work. Whether you believe in an actual Source or not, you could think of it as part of Jung's collective conscious. For example, many people don't believe in a God but have no problems believing in luck. At some core, we would all at very least like to believe that there is a benign power in the universe that tilts the scales--at least a little bit--in our favor. Positive reinforcement is a powerful motivator and something we all react to in our environment. If we get the desired results by doing something, we try that something again and again. As we all learned in Psych 101, if you put a subject on a random, positive reinforcement schedule they don't just sit and wait for the next treat to come by. Our brains try to make sense of the situation, and we start displaying deliberate, ritualized behaviors that we think are will result in more rewards. Regardless of the randomness, our brains are trained to structure our universe; to tease out causes and effects even when they don't exist. With a random reward schedule we still try to figure out exactly what it is that we are doing to receive the reward. It is as though we believe that our actions will almost always determine outcomes. That there is an invisible hand that will reward us if we do the right thing...

So hockey players will continue to let their beards grow during the playoffs, basketball players will bounce the ball before taking a foul shot, and baseball players will continue to spit on their hands before picking up a bat. Belief in a Power greater than ourselves has helped many an atheist alcoholic. In the same way the concepts of The Source, Shadow, and The Maze still may work for you, even if you don't believe in them in a literal sense.

At the same time, Stutz and Michels are not about to lose their clientele because they published this book. The fact that 'the secret is out' doesn't mean that everyone can negotiate The Tools optimally on their own. Not only do The Tools take imagination, energy, perseverance, and a lot of work, it isn't always so easy to figure out how to apply them in all situations. For most, it probably takes the guiding hand of an experienced therapist to help a patient really use these tools to achieve maximal effects. A therapist's guidance can also help a patient stay on track. Once successful, it is easy to stop using the tools and backslide back into a Maze (or create another Maze). The Tools are not a one shot deal--they take commitment. You have to continue to use them to reap the benefits.

CONCLUSION:
The Tools is an intriguing book that might just be the kind of self-help guide you are looking for. I'd encourage you to visit the authors' website and view their introductory videos. I would also encourage you to look at the preview of this book before purchasing. The Tools may not be for everyone, but the book is a quick and interesting read and, at least for me, I have seen what I believe is real benefit from trying these techniques on a daily basis.

Tough love

If you look up the meaning of the idiom "get religion" in the third edition of the American Heritage College Dictionary, you will find out that it means, "to accept a higher power as a controlling influence for the good in one's life." Getting religion seems to be the underlying philosophy for Phil Stutz and Barry Michels' s "The Tools." As I read the book, I was pleased to see that two trained mental health professionals give a nod to spirituality. Yet, I was also somewhat amused at their efforts to re-brand some of the ideas behind the "tools" with catchy names when in fact they have roots reaching back into traditional religious, moral and ethical principles.

Unlike other self-help books, when you read "The Tools," it is understood that you have a problem. The authors do not dwell on the whys of what may be afflicting you. Instead, they identify four problems and give you five tools to help you move through each problem. Each tool is associated with a higher force and using the tools will eventually bring you in touch with "the Source" and your inner creator.

In spite of the New Age-like terms, some readers may feel a sense of familiarity with Stutz and Michels's tools, problems and higher forces. The Force of Forward Motion is encompassed in old concepts of determination, tenacity and persistence. The Higher Force of Outflow is forgiveness (we know forgiveness is a higher force: To err is human, to forgive divine, remember?). The authors' problem called "The Maze" is what we know as resentment. The Black Cloud is pessimism or if we wanted a more scientific name, generalized anxiety disorder. Their concept of "The Source" could easily be that of god and the inner creator is that of soul.

The tools themselves are visualizations designed to motivate you into action or to change an old perception that is preventing you from changing your life for the better. The authors warn that they are not magic pills and only constant practice of the tools will lead to success. In fact, the fifth tool is the key to making all the other tools effective.

I cannot vouch for the efficaciousness of the tools. But I think they are not meant for serious mental problems. They are more for people who might feel that they are in a rut or stuck in their lives and are trying to find a way to move on. What strikes me about the book is the tough-love stance of the authors. There is no coddling the reader, no excusing him/her because of an imperfect childhood. The authors deliver their message with a sort of (you) do-or-die attitude.

Though they may be packaging old ideas in new wrappers, I like their willingness to recognize the spiritual aspect of a problem and its solution, reminding readers that there is something bigger than us--be that called god or source. And that it is our estrangement from that being or force and our fixation with consumerism (the false idol) that is perhaps the major cause of our unhappiness as individuals and as a society as a whole.
