Amazon Conservation in the Age of Development: The Limits of Providence, by Ronald A. Foresta

The tropical rain forest of the Brazilian Amazon has become one of the familiar modern metaphors for wanton destruction. This study addresses this crisis. It argues that in the last two decades those who forged and applied conservation programmes in Brazil misunderstood a basic component of development politics. In his view, top government officials supported conservation more to advance immediate foreign and domestic policy goals and less because of the benefits conservation promissed. Modern conservation theorists assume that conservation programmes are most likely to succeed if they fit into broader national development programmes. Foresta advocates the opposite: leave the Earth's remaining natural areas outside the pale of modern development planning, he urges, for a greater chance of success in the long run. Though focused on conservation efforts for Amazonia, his analysis applies to developing nations throughout the world. Conservation practitioners and administrators can read this work as a guide to the pitfalls of conservation policy-making in the Third World, others as a call for a new approach to preserving the world's biological resource.

Saved and Sanctified: The Rise of a Storefront Church in Great Migration Philadelphia (History of African-American Religions), by Deidre H

During the early twentieth century, millions of southern blacks moved north to escape the violent racism of the Jim Crow South and to find employment in urban centers. They transplanted not only themselves but also their culture; in the midst of this tumultuous demographic transition emerged a new social institution, the storefront sanctified church.
Saved and Sanctified focuses on one such Philadelphia church that was started above a horse stable, was founded by a woman born sixteen years after the Emancipation Proclamation, and is still active today. “The Church,” as it is known to its members, offers a unique perspective on an under-studied aspect of African American religious institutions.
Through painstaking historical and ethnographic research, Deidre Helen Crumbley illuminates the crucial role these oftentimes controversial churches played in the spiritual life of the African American community during and after the Great Migration. She provides a new perspective on women and their leadership roles, examines the loose or nonexistent relationship these Pentecostal churches have with existing denominations, and dispels common prejudices about those who attend storefront churches. Skillfully interweaving personal vignettes from her own experience as a member, along with life stories of founding members, Crumbley provides new insights into the importance of grassroots religion and community-based houses of worship.

Counterpoint to Trafalgar: The Anglo-Russian Invasion of Naples, 1805-1806 (New Perspectives on Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology)

Counterpoint to Trafalgar offers the first detailed account of the important land and sea campaign in the Napoleonic wars: the Anglo-Russian invasion of Naples, which prevented Napoleon from controlling the Mediterranean during the war of the third coalition. Flayhart recounts the exciting story of the chaotic efforts of the joint British and Russian military force during the invasion of southern Italy. In 1805 Napoleonic France and Great Britain were locked in a naval duel for maritime supremacy. A British military expedition was sent to the Mediterranean to preserve the independence of Naples. Joining with a Russian Army troop nearby, the combined forces invaded southern Italy in order to place allied troops between the French in the north and Naples in the south. The two great convoys carrying more than 20,000 Russian and British troops was too great a prize for Napoleon to ignore, and the emperor ordered the French fleet to enter the Mediterranean and destroy the troopships. The ensuing battle became known as the Battle of Trafalgar.

From Library Journal
A little-known sidelight of the War of the Third Coalition was the invasion of Naples in November 1805 by Russian and English forces. It was the principal Allied effort in the Mediterranean during one of the shorter phases of the Napoleonic Wars. Its goal was to preserve the independence of Naples against French aggression. This well-researched and well-documented book recounts the difficulties involved in mounting a joint amphibious expedition in the early 19th century. It examines the logistics, untrustworthy diplomacy, and delayed, insecure communications of the operation. Although the invasion produced no immediate tactical success, it did prove to be a dress rehearsal for later operations in Portugal and Spain, and it lured the French fleet to sea and ultimate destruction at Trafalgar. Recommended for interested lay readers as well as specialists.

“[Rachel] Joyce’s beguiling debut is [a] modest-seeming story of ‘ordinary’ English lives that enthralls and moves you as it unfolds.”—People (four stars)

Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning a letter arrives, addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl, from a woman he hasn’t heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. But before Harold mails off a quick reply, a chance encounter convinces him that he absolutely must deliver his message to Queenie in person. In his yachting shoes and light coat, Harold Fry embarks on an urgent quest. Determined to walk six hundred miles to the hospice, Harold believes that as long as he walks, Queenie will live. A novel of charm, humor, and profound insight into the thoughts and feelings we all bury deep within our hearts, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry introduces Rachel Joyce as a wise—and utterly irresistible—storyteller.

“The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is not just a book about lost love. It is about all the wonderful everyday things Harold discovers through the mere process of putting one foot in front of the other.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, July 2012: Harold Fry--retired sales rep, beleaguered husband, passive observer of his own life--decides one morning to walk 600 miles across England to save an old friend. It might not work, mind you, but that's hardly the point. In playwright Rachel Joyce's pitch-perfect first novel, Harold wins us over with his classic antiheroism. Setting off on the long journey, he wears the wrong jacket, doesn't have a toothbrush, and leaves his phone at home--in short, he is wholly, endearingly unprepared. But as he travels, Harold finally has time to reflect on his failings as a husband, father, and friend, and this helps him become someone we (and, more important, his wife Maureen) can respect. After walking for a while in Harold Fry's very human shoes, you might find that your own fit a bit better. --Mia Lipman

Praise for The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

“[A] gorgeously poignant novel of hope and transformation.”—O: The Oprah Magazine

“You have to love Harold Fry, a man who set out one morning to mail a letter and then just kept going. . . . Like Christian in John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, Harold becomes Everyman in the eyes of those who encounter him. . . . Harold's journey, which parallels Christian's nicely but not overly neatly, takes him to the edge of death and back again. It will stick with you, this story of faith, fidelity and redemption.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

“For all of us perfectly responsible, stoop-shouldered suburbanites wearing a path in the living-room carpet, Harold’s ridiculous journey is a cause for celebration. This is Walter Mitty skydiving. This is J. Alfred Prufrock not just eating that peach, but throwing the pit out the window, rolling up his trousers and whistling to those hot mermaids. Released from the cage of his own passivity, Harold feels transformed, though he keeps his tie on. . . . In this bravely unpretentious and unsentimental tale, she’s cleared space where miracles are still possible.” —Washington Post

"[R]emarkable. . . . I can't think of a better recommendation for summer reading. And take your time, just as Harold does.”—USA Today, four out of four stars review

[A] story of present-day courage. . . . .  about how easily a mousy, domesticated man can get lost and how joyously he can be refound.”—Janet Maslin, New York Times

“From its charming beginning to its startling and cathartic denouement, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is a comic and tragic joy.”—Cleveland Plain Dealer

“When it seems almost too late, Harold Fry opens his battered heart and lets the world rush in. This funny, poignant story about an ordinary man on an extraordinary journey moved and inspired me.”—Nancy Horan, author of Loving Frank

“There’s tremendous heart in this debut novel by Rachel Joyce, as she probes questions that are as simple as they are profound: Can we begin to live again, and live truly, as ourselves, even in middle age, when all seems ruined? Can we believe in hope when hope seems to have abandoned us? I found myself laughing through tears, rooting for Harold at every step of his journey. I’m still rooting for him.”—Paula McLain, author of The Paris Wife

“Marvelous! I held my breath at his every blister and cramp, and felt as if by turning the pages, I might help his impossible quest succeed.”—Helen Simonson, author of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand

“Harold’s journey is ordinary and extraordinary; it is a journey through the self, through modern society, through time and landscape. It is a funny book, a wise book, a charming book—but never cloying. It’s a book with a  savage twist—and yet never seems manipulative. Perhaps because Harold himself is just wonderful. . . . I’m telling you now: I love this book.”—Erica Wagner, The Times (UK)

“The odyssey of a simple man . . . original, subtle and touching.”—Claire Tomalin, author of Charles Dickens: A Life

“The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry takes the most ordinary and unassuming of men and turns him into a hero for us all. To go on this journey with Harold will not only break your heart, it might just also heal it.”—Tiffany Baker, author of The Little Giant of Aberdeen County

“A gentle and genteel charmer, brimming with British quirkiness yet quietly haunting in its poignant and wise examination of love and devotion. Sure to become a book-club favorite.”— Booklist

A LOVELY AND UNASSUMING NOVEL ABOUT PEOPLE YOU WILL LIKE
By David Keymer
Harold Fry, six months retired from his job as sales representative for a local brewery, gets a letter from Queenie, a woman he'd worked with twenty years before but hasn't seen since. She tells him that she's dying of cancer. The news upsets him for years earlier, Queenie had done him a great favor and he'd never had the chance to thank her. He sits down to write a letter to her but finds it hard to say anything without seeming . . . "limp,' is the word that comes to his mind. When he has finished the letter, he leaves the house to mail it but when he gets to the mailbox, he walks on to the next one, and then the next, and the next, and soon he's at the opposite edge of town. He stops at a convenience store to get something to eat. He tells the girl at the counter that he has a friend who has cancer and he's got a letter he's going to post to her. The girl talks about her aunt who had cancer. She says science doesn't know everything, you have to believe a person can get better. "You see, if you have faith, you can do anything."

In that moment, Harold, who's spent most of his life doing only the ordinary and comfortable at all, realizes what he must do. He's going to walking to his friend's sickbed. He knows it's not reasonable but he's convinced that as long as he keeps walking toward her, his friend will stay alive. He telephones the hospice, tells Queenie's nurse to take her a message: "Tell her Harold Fry is on his way. All she has to do is wait. . . . I am going to save her, you see. I will keep walking and she must keep living. Will you say that? . . . Tell her this time I won't let her down."

And that's how Harold sets out on a six hundred mile journey, from Kingsbridge to Berwick upon Tweed, utterly unprepared for the trip and dressed in everyday clothes, not hiking gear. On his way, he meets all sorts of people and has all sorts of adventures, more small than large. ("Life was very different when you walked through it," Harold observes.) As he walks, the memories pile in: memories of a mother who abandoned him and a harsh, unforgiving father; the happy early years with his wife, Maureen; their hopes for their son David. But David intimidates Harold and Maude with his intelligence and his intransigence. He puts down his father for reading the wrong newspaper, as though that single fact renders him unfit to comment on anything. His mother makes excuses for him, "He's clever, you see," and the author observes, "implicit in the remark was the conviction that cleverness was both an excuse for everything, and out of their reach." (How sad!) Something happens and Maureen and he fall out. They no longer connect, no longer talk or share experiences. They still live together --in a modest cottage, shuttered with white net curtains that hide the world outside- but their lives are loveless and claustrophobic, where once they had been happy. What happened?

It would be wrong to reveal more of what happens in this lovely novel. In the end, both Harold and Maude learn something about themselves but as to what they learn, read it for yourself.

This is a quite good read. I'm uncomfortable with books that are overly sentimental - but though at times, this book comes close to being mawkish, it never is. The author avoids excess even in a book as filled with feeling as this one is; she doesn't clobber the reader over the head with a message. At one point in the book, Harold picks up followers, who want to join him on his pilgrimage across England. This part of the book seems contrived -too deliberately comic in its overtones- but still, even this portion is eminently readable. As to Harold and Maude, they are wonderful creations.

I particularly like the way the author describes things. She catches the way a not terribly well educated, not at all original late-middle aged man like Harold would see things, expressing his view of them in ordinary (concrete) language that yet has its own poetry. Thus Harold observes a woman he meets on the way: "Her eyes were round, as if she had contact lenses that maybe hurt." His next door neighbor, Rex, "was a short man with tidy feet at the bottom, a small head at the top, and a very round body in the middle, causing Harold to fear sometimes that if he fell there would be no stopping him. He would roll down the hill like a barrel."

Ultimately this novel is about redemption. It's not grand and certainly not flashy. But it is very human.

A Subversive Novel
By L. M. Keefer
This book may inspire you to go for a long walk--for 500 miles or so--like its protagonist Harold Fry did across England. You see how walking through your world five to ten miles a day for 500 miles might transform you. "Life was very different when you walked through it," realizes Harold.

Harold Fry lives invisibly and conventionally. His wife, Maureen, has become like her taste in toast: "cold and crisp". One day a letter arrives for Harold that changes their lives. The letter causes him to do something irrational and unpredictable. But as a waitress sympathetically told him in my favorite line of the book, "If we don't go mad once in a while, there's no hope." (That sounds so oddly rational that I have been contemplating what "mad" thing to do to increase the hope quotient. This may be a subversive book.)

Howard takes off on foot on a pilgrimage to see the writer of this letter. As a kind of modern CANTERBURY TALES, Howard meets many eccentric and colorful characters who cause him to see life in a new way. The pleasure of this book for me was rejoicing in Harold's transformation and the new life and self he is beginning to create. "He understood that in walking to atone for the mistakes he had made, it was also his journey to accept the strangeness of others." Meanwhile his wife, Maureen, is simultaneously changing at home: "She had given herself a challenge: every day without him, she would attempt one new thing." This book chronicles the changes these two characters undergo during Harold's pilgrimage which oddly brings them closer.

The other huge pleasure of this book is the author's original and vibrant writing. Some choice examples:

* "His shirt, tie, and trousers were folded small as an apology on a faded blue velvet chair."

* "They spoke with the same cut-glass loud accent as Maureen's mother had used."

* "In the morning, her frocks were strewn like empty mothers all over the small house."

I couldn't help wonder how the author could write so gorgeously in a first book. Learned she previously had a twenty-year acting career performing leading roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company speaking the immortal words of the Bard himself--what better training? That background combined with writing plays for BBC Radio must have helped the author to create some of the best prose I have read recently. (This is a tad random, but if the author ever had the desire to write a mystery, her ability to sketch intriguing characters and situations with delicious prose could combine in an original and quirky mystery series like Kate Atkinson and John Banville/Benjamin Black have done.)

If you like a lot of action in a novel, this is more introspective fare. Sometimes the book moves slowly like a meandering and melancholy walk as Howard revisits in his mind his unlived and mournful life. Othertimes, you may just want to buy Harold a thick pair of socks and sturdy walking shoes so you won't have to read about his blisters anymore.

If you enjoy original and thoughtful novels of introspection and character transformation, you may enjoy this novel which moves from melancholy to buoyancy as Harold walks into an encouraging and promising future. If you enjoy stories of positive transformation, this novel may beguile you. And if you don't decide to "go a little mad once in a while", at the least you will probably enjoy walking more with a sense of its possibilities after reading this winsome novel.

A bit slow at first, but ultimately rewarding
By K. Blaine
I selected "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" to read and review because I loved "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand," a book to which it was compared in the publisher's preview. And while I prefer "Major Pettigrew" for its pacing and multicultural appeal, I wholeheartedly recommend "Harold Fry." It has charms of its own.

Henry David Thoreau observed, "The mass of men live lives of quiet desperation," and I could not help but recall this quotation as I began Rachel Joyce's lovely debut novel. As the novel begins, Harold is merely existing. The reader is not given many details, but it is clear that Harold's marriage to Maureen is an empty shell, and that there are problems in his relationship with his adult son, David. Then Harold gets a farewell letter of sorts from a friend, Queenie Hennessy, and his carefully orchestrated charade of a life begins to come apart. Queenie had "done something nice" for Harold twenty years previous, and he always regretted not thanking her. Whatever this is is shrouded in mystery, and many readers will suspect a long-past affair. All these questions are a bit disconcerting, but if the reader is patient, all will be resolved.

Harold writes a "pro forma" response to Queenie's note, but as he goes out to mail it, something prevents him from putting it in the first mailbox he comes to. He passes postbox after postbox, and eventually makes an impulsive decision to walk from his hometown to Queenie's hospice, about 600 miles. Thus begins his transformation from a kind of living death to fullness of life.

Readers who are familiar with Joseph Campbell's "The Hero's Journey" will immediately recognize the motif: the hero leaves the world he knows to embark on a quest. Along the way he meets both helpers and tempters, and he eventually returns to the known world with a fullness of knowledge or with something to enrich his community and himself.

Harold Fry fits this motif to a tee. He meets many people and even animals along the way, and he gains something of value from each of them, even those who would deter him from his quest. Meanwhile, back at home, Maureen is undergoing her own transformation as she worries and responds to Harold's calls, postcards, and gifts. Nothing is as Harold or Maureen expect it to be. And the end of the quest is rewarding, but not in the way Harold imagines.

One final observation: This is a beautifully written novel. Most readers will love the use of language, especially in descriptions of the natural world. I am stunned that this is the author's first novel, though she has written many screenplays for the BBC. I hope to read much more of her work.

Most readers will like and appreciate "Harold Fry" if they persevere through the ambiguity at the beginning. Everything falls together eventually, I promise! Highly recommended.

American Railroad Labor and the Genesis of the New Deal, 1919-1935 (Working in the Americas), by Jon R. Huibregtse

"Gauges and measures how railroad labor unions emerged from the World War I experience stronger and more vitally interested in improving their members' lives. Captures how well the railroad unions embarked on a path of reforming retirement systems and social security."--Colin J. Davis, University of Alabama, Birmingham

"Makes an interesting argument that the leadership of the railroad unions, primarily the operating crafts, were leaders in the development of labor law and social policy that predates the founding of the CIO."--Mark A. Crouch, labor educator

American historians tend to believe that labor activism was moribund in the years between the First World War and the New Deal. Jon Huibregtse challenges this perspective in his examination of the railroad unions of the time, arguing that not only were they active, but that they made a big difference in American Labor practices by helping to set legal precedents.

Huibregtse explains how efforts by the Plumb Plan League and the Railroad Labor Executive Association created the Railroad Labor Act, its amendments, and the Railroad Retirement Act. These laws became models for the National Labor Relations Act and the Social Security Act. Unfortunately, the significant contributions of the railroad laws are, more often than not, overlooked when the NLRA or Social Security are discussed.

Offering a new perspective on labor unions in the 1920s, Huibregtse describes how the railroad unions created a model for union activism that workers’ organizations followed for the next two decades.

Florida's Turtles, Lizards, and Crocodilians: A Guide toTheir Identification and Habits, by Richard D. Bartlett, Patricia Bartlett

Features both native and non-native species now living in Florida “A welcome addition to the library of the amateur and professional herpetologist alike, covering such diverse topics as molecular biology all the way to charming personal anecdotes.”—Charles Scott Pfaff, herpetology curator, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden “With a growing species list wrought by thriving alien taxa, and the changing abundance of many other forms, much of what is already written about Florida’s herpetofauna has become outdated and incomplete. A need for a new reference, to treat a new fauna, has emerged. The Bartletts have answered this need with a fine new book.”—Steve Reichling, author of Reptiles and Amphibians of the Southern Pine Woods From alligators in backyard swimming pools to tiny lizards on window screens, you don’t have to go far in Florida to find reptiles. Both fascinating and feared, there are more than one hundred species and subspecies of turtles, lizards, and crocodilians in the state—nearly half of which are non-native.
Florida’s Turtles, Lizards, and Crocodilians is the most comprehensive field guide available to identify and understand these creatures. Complete with range maps, vibrant color photographs, and detailed descriptions, the book is filled with information. Tips on herping (similar to birding) include where and when to look for different kinds of lizards, turtles, and crocodilians in the wild, how to identify them, which ones you can and cannot capture, how to properly care for unregulated species at home, and how best to photograph them.
200-pound snapping turtles to tiny, legless worm lizards, from animals that live in the open ocean to ones that prefer dry sands, from caimans to terrapins to basilisks (though not the Harry Potter variety), everything you could want to know about Florida’s non-snake reptiles can be found in this book.

Turtles
By carolkoi
I really wanted something that gave me info on the local turtle populations. I had no idea how many native species live in FL. And I've seen the legless lizards, so this is very helpful. Don't want to kill anything that is good for the environment! Thanks.

Not only her BEST BOOK, but Her most Important Book YET - 5 Stars
By Richard of Connecticut
This is Suze Orman's tenth book, and probably 10th best seller, which tells you right away that she has a built-in audience, for which she has earned their trust. In this book, she proves once again that she is spot on accurate in her understanding of what the average American investor needs to understand to financially protect themselves in a volatile economic environment.

After the 2008 financial crisis, Suze wrote a book telling people how to immediately survive the crisis. In this book, she tells us what we do not want to hear. She has come to the realization that the American Dream as understood by our parents and grandparents is now over, and there is a brand new set of financial realities that we must COME TO GRIPS with if we are to achieve any kind of financial security in the future. She accomplishes this in 9 chapters and 281 pages of highly readable commentary that for the most part is accurate, original and very useful.

Although each chapter has an appropriate title, what I found more helpful is that in the Table of Contents after the chapter headings, the author will list the lessons that she wants you to learn in each chapter. Most chapters have one or two lessons for the reader, and some have as many as five. I found the most important lessons in the book to be the following:

VITAL LESSONS:

* Finding Your Truth - page 13

* The Power of CASH - page 21

* How to build honest family relations - page 31

* How to help adult children facing financial challenges - page 64

* New rules of buying a home - page 87

* Time is your greatest asset - page 159

* Delay your social security benefit - page 207

* Must have documents - page 275

* The ULTIMATE LESSON - page 275

You could tell that Ms. Orman had a very rough time writing this book. It is evident throughout. She had to come to terms with the reality that the America we all wish to be, no longer is, and therefore new financial rules have to be mastered. This is a book that she was compelled to write, but did not want to. She also writes about this in her last piece in the book which is the ULTIMATE LESSON. This chapter deals with the death of the American Dream and what the politicians have allowed to happen to this country, and for which we are all responsible since we elected them. As she likes to put it:

Do NOTHING, Change NOTHING, you will get NOTHING

We must FOCUS on WHAT IS REAL TODAY, and step by step the author accomplishes her task, which is to give us concrete steps that each of us can take considering the new financial situation we are faced with. She even tells us to define ourselves by who we are, and not what we have. With 14 million people currently unemployed, and another 9 million working part-time who are seeking full-time work, we cannot take a lackadaisical attitude towards our financial interests.

I urge you to take a look at this latest work from this interesting author in these troubling times. You can only benefit from the knowledge she gives us, and you just may be doing yourself a favor. Thank you for reading this review.

Basic Orman with a twist
By Susanna Hutcheson
Orman's new book is unique in a way and typical Orman teachings in another. She tells us (as if we need to be told) that things are different now and will be into the unforeseeable future. She says her last book, quickly written, was for an emergency situation and this book is more of a road map, the master plan.

Among the words of wisdom, "In many areas of the country, the dream of homeownership has backfired. Real estate values have deflated to such an extent that a record number of people owe more than their homes are worth. That's not an American Dream--it's a nightmare."

"The home, the job security, the education, the retirement--the very standard of living that all of us took for granted for so long is completely under siege."

In her discussion of the American dream, she admits it's over. "In many ways it pains me to say this, but in my opinion the American Dream as we knew it is dead." She says, however, that's a good news, bad news situation. She then precedes to tell the reader how best to handle the situation as it exists.

She persists in her eight months of savings and yet having a 700 plus Fico score. I personally see this as impractical for many people. Moreover, people with unstable income, such as the self-employed, often can't make budgets and plan the way Orman insists everyone should.

Orman talks like everyone has buckets of money to put in this, that and the other thing. And, yes, if you do all of it, you'll be fine. Question is, where does one get the money?

I much prefer the great book The 10 Commandments of Money: Survive and Thrive in the New Economy. It's far more doable, in my opinion.

Orman tells us, "We must transform ourselves from dreaming society's dreams and putting our faith in a false and misleading sense of entitlement, to being a society where each of us strives for dreams that are personal and realistic and that are in the best interests--in the truest and most honest sense--of us and our family. I am calling upon each of us to rethink the very way we dream."

One thing that hit me straight away, was her reversing herself somewhat from her 2009 book on the subject of reverse mortgages. In that book, she was quite keen for them. In the new book, however, she has many reservations.

"I have to say that I think reverse mortgages are a potentially dangerous step for many retirees. It is far too easy to get blinded by the prospect of receiving much-needed income today and overlook some important considerations", she writes.

While everything she writes about reverse mortgages is true, it's also true that there are some older people who could not stay in their homes were it not for reverse mortgages. There are folks in their sixties, seventies and above still making mortgage payments. A reverse can save many of those people so much grief. Therefore, I think it's wrong to scare at least that group off reverse mortgages and I do not understand her reversal, especially since a new type of reverse is now available that is less costly.

The book is well written for the most part, although she writes to a group and not an individual, not a specially good style of writing.

She writes, "I am going to challenge you not merely to live within your means, but to live below your means." Certainly few can argue with that. "It is time to move beyond materialism in order to set our sights on authentic happiness", she adds.

"We must let go of the past. The decisions you make today must be based on what is realistic today--not what may have been true in the past, but what you know for a fact is an honest accounting of what is happening for you right here, right now."

Orman is giving us her view of reality. Only the reader can judge for himself if it's the view he or she wants to adopt. But I find no fault with it.

Other tidbits include:

"While you will always need to borrow to purchase a home, and many families will need to borrow for college as well, one of the fundamental principles of the New American Dream is to pay for as much as possible with cash. Spend what you have today, not what you hope to have tomorrow."

"Monitor your account every other day. If someone has managed to hack into your account and withdraw money using your debit card info, your liability is limited to $[...] if you notify your bank or credit union within two business days. Otherwise you could be held liable for up to $[...] in fraudulent charges."

"Open a separate savings account for each goal. Your emergency fund should be its own separate account. And every additional savings goal should have its own dedicated savings account."

There's lots of good in the book. But I found Weston's book much better.

Nonetheless, there are lots of Orman fans and, if you're one, you'll likely enjoy this book. You will, however, find lots of the same old stuff in it.

A word about the Kindle edition, it is not text to speech enabled. I find that a disappointment, especially considering the price of the book. That had no bearing on the number of stars I gave the book, however.

Review of The Money Class- Letter to Suze Orman
By Val Baumann
( From March posting on Your Life.Your Money blog . [...])

Dear Suze,

Thank you so much for the opportunity to give you my thoughts on your new book, The Money Class. I feel honored and privileged to do so. You are an American Icon and an extraordinary Financial Expert. Your advice and counsel have truly helped millions of people.

In short - I loved your new book. Once again you have delivered to your fans a primer on managing money in current times. I am impressed with all the detailed advice you provided on everything from Family, Career, Buying a Home, Investing and Saving for Retirement at all stages of life. Everyone will find something of great benefit. I also went to your web site and reviewed the tools and financial calculators that accompany the book. They are terrific, easy to use, and a wonderful bonus that goes along with purchasing the book. Anyone who follows your advice and direction will be successful not only with their money but also with their life.

About the philosophy you espouse in the book; I loved your clarion call to "Stand in your Truth" about your money. This is both brilliant and critical. For years, people have been able to "lie" to themselves about their money by leveraging home equity and credit cards. For a short time, everyone could appear richer than they really were by taking money from their future and spending it in the present. When the bubble burst, people found themselves in trouble. And when layoffs proliferated and new job opportunities shrank, the trouble grew even worse. The thesis of your book to be true to yourself and live below your means in order to protect your future is a very necessary one.

Finally, I was touched by your deep care and compassion especially in the final chapter. It IS damn hard to write a book that conveys sobering truths to people who are already suffering. It never feels good to hear that the time of illusion is over and now we have to get back to basics....buying what we can afford, saving for our future, working longer since we now live longer.

I had only one minor quibble with your writing. You say we need to adopt a "New" American Dream. I think it isn't new, per se. It really is the same American Dream that our Grandparents and Great Grandparents had. You alluded to this in the last few paragraphs of the book. This real American Dream was corrupted over the past thirty years by, in my opinion, the rise of Deregulation, flattening of the Tax Rates, and explosion of Executive pay in the financial services industry. Our society was corrupted too. We now have a chasm between the Rich and Poor with the Middle Class very much in danger. It's time to wring out the excesses and negative incentives and go back to what made our Country great: a Society where all people could feel they were generally treated equally and with dignity by their Government and Corporate America; a belief that their personal American Dream was achievable if they managed their money well and worked hard for it. '

Suze, you have done a great service to your readers by telling them the truth. I wish our Government leaders would do this too. I hope your book can ignite a national dialogue on these critical issues. Congratulations on your New York Times #1 best selling book. I wish you much continued success with it!
