Wake: A Novel, by Anna Hope

Anna Hope’s brilliant debut unfolds over the course of five days, as three women must deal with the aftershocks of World War I and its impact on the men in their lives.

Wake: 1) Emerge or cause to emerge from sleep. 2) Ritual for the dead. 3) Consequence or aftermath.

London, 1920. The city prepares to observe the two-year anniversary of Armistice Day with the burial of the unknown soldier. Many are still haunted by the war: Hettie, a dance instructress, lives at home with her mother and her brother, who is mute after his return from combat. One night Hettie meets a wealthy, educated man and finds herself smitten with him. But there is something distracted about him, something she cannot reach. . . . Evelyn works at the Pensions Exchange, through which thousands of men have claimed benefits from wounds or debilitating distress. Embittered by her own loss, she looks for solace in her adored brother, who has not been the same since he returned from the front. . . . Ada is beset by visions of her son on every street, convinced he is still alive. Helpless, her loving husband has withdrawn from her. Then one day a young man appears at her door, seemingly with notions to peddle, like hundreds of out-of-work veterans. But when he utters the name of her son, Ada is jolted to the core.

The lives of these three women are braided together, their stories gathering tremendous power as the ties that bind them become clear, and the body of the unknown soldier moves closer and closer to its final resting place.

Advance praise for Wake

“Hope’s unblinking prose is reminiscent of Vera Brittain’s classic memoir Testament of Youth in its depiction of the social and emotional fallout, particularly on women, of the Great War. . . . Hope reaches beyond the higher echelons of society to women of different social classes, all linked by their reluctance to bid goodbye to the world the conflict has shattered.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Wake is a tender and timely novel, full of compassion and quiet insight. The author gives us a moving and original glimpse into the haunted peace after the Great War, her characters drawn by the gravity of the unmarked, the unknown, and perhaps, finally, the unhoped for.”—Chris Cleave, author of Little Bee

“Wake is a compelling and emotionally charged debut about the painful aftermath of war and the ways—small, brave, or commonplace—in which we keep ourselves going. It touches feelings we know, and settings—dance halls, war fronts, queues outside the grocer’s—that we don’t. I loved it.”—Rachel Joyce, author of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

“Wake is powerful and humane, a novel that charms and beguiles. Anna Hope’s characters are so real, flawed, and searching, and her prose so natural, one almost forgets how very great a story she is telling.”—Sadie Jones, author of The Uninvited Guests

“Using telling detail, Hope creates a vibrant physical and emotional landscape in which her leading characters, and a sea of others, move irresistibly into the future, some having found resolution, others still in search. Fresh, confident, yet understated, Hope’s first work movingly revisits immense tragedy while also confirming her own highly promising ability.”—Kirkus Reviews

From Booklist
Wake is skillfully written from the outset, though the initial premise doesn’t feel especially groundbreaking: in post-WWI London, three ordinary women cope with their stagnant lives. Hettie partners single men at a Hammersmith dance hall to support her mother and shell-shocked brother, upper-class Evelyn works as a pension clerk while mourning her lover, and Ada can’t move past her soldier son’s death. Hope then proceeds to color in their personal histories, revealing the distinctiveness of each character and situation over five days, during the lead-up to the unveiling of the Unknown Warrior’s tomb in Westminster Abbey. As their circumstances change and new people enter their lives, the women are spurred to action. Likewise, as these characters’ stories and others’ are intermixed, readers will be flipping pages to discover their tragic connection. The background details are vivid, from a crowded West End jazz club to the trenches of northern France, both in 1920 and earlier. This increasingly riveting novel about war’s futility, grief, remembrance, and renewal is a solid effort timed just right for the WWI centenary. --Sarah Johnson

An interesting and powerful read
By jimmyfrog
Modern presentation of the immediate post world war one period in England where various characters struggle to come to terms with the trauma and try to get on with their lives. Characters, well developped, present a range of lives and experiences of trauma and loss. The addition of the choosing of the Unknown Soldier, to represent for all ages to follow, the millions of lives lost to the war, finishes to recreate the period chosen. This book is therefore informative and evocative. it takes a different route from Testament of Youth written by Vera Britten but impacts the reader's feelings in a thought provoking manner. Though dark and sad in atmosphere, an interesting and powerful read.

Freedom for Women: Forging the Women's Liberation Movement, 1953-1970, by Carol Giardina

"Giardina presents a history of the women's liberation movement that captures the early excitement of collective feminist activity. Grounded in rich details, Giardina's study uncovers how a small group of people generated the ideas and strategies that helped a movement catch fire."--Anne M. Valk, author of Radical Sisters

"A fresh and provocative interpretation of the origins of the women's liberation movement. By examining the contributions of African American and white feminist 'founders, ' her work challenges widely held misconceptions about second wave feminism."--Christina Greene, University of Wisconsin

In this richly detailed firsthand history of the contemporary Women's Liberation Movement (WLM), scholar-activist Carol Giardina argues against the prevalent belief that the movement grew out of frustrations over the male chauvinism experienced by WLM founders active in the Black Freedom Movement and the New Left. Instead, she contends, it was the ideas, resources, and skills that women gained in these movements that were the new and necessary catalysts for forging the WLM in the 1960s.

Giardina uses a focused study of the WLM in Florida to tap into the common theory and history shared by a relatively small band of Women's Liberation founders across the country. Drawing on a wealth of interviews, autobiographical essays, organizational records, and published writings, Freedom for Women brings to light information that has been previously ignored in other secondary accounts about the leadership of African American women in the movement. It also explores activists' roots in other movements on the left. Comprehensive, serendipitous, and carefully formulated, Giardina's work is a vivid portrait of the people and events that shaped radical feminism.

Carol Giardina, visiting assistant professor of history at Queen's College in New York, is one of the founders of the modern Women's Liberation Movement.

Freedom for Women, Yes!
By Woman for Liberation
This book is a fast, enjoyable read. A few things stick with me even as the details of "who did what when" fade away. The first is how INTENTIONAL the founding of the women's liberation movement was. The mass movement was no accident nor was it unexpected by those working towards women's liberation. The connection between the civil rights movement and the women who went on to found the women's liberation movement has been probed before but never have I understood how inspirational the black freedom movement, including black power, was for these women. Giardina also demonstrates quite a bit of interaction between black and white feminists in the early years and between feminists in the North and South. Finally, this book gives great insight into what life was like before feminism became institutionalized and includes interesting discussion of the original meaning of phrases like "The Personal is Political" and "Sisterhood is Powerful".

Buried truths and riveting stories
By Candace C. Churchill
Giardina uncovers the original sources and actual people who started a movement that caught like fire, not just in the US, but worldwide. Giardina proves how black women played key roles in starting the women's liberation movement and leading projects and formulating theory. This flies in the face of conventional "whitewashing" of feminism by the academic establishment. Giardina reminds us what it was like before women could wear pants most places or get a legal abortion. She tells of the women and the groups that strategized and formulated the ideas that sparked real change for millions. It's this kind of book that gives hope in what can be acheived again through movements, if we base our work in the everyday experience of women and target our aim at the men (some in our family and many at the top of soceity) who benefit from women's oppression. A great, fast read chock full of facts and quotes.

The Southern Dream of a Caribbean Empire, 1854-1861: With a New Preface (New Perspectives on the History of the South), by Robert E. May

"The great value of the book lies in the manner in which May relates the expansionist urge to the "symbolic" differences emerging between the North and the South. The result is a balanced account that contributes to the efforts of historians to understand the causes of the Civil War."--Journal of American History "The most ambitious effort yet to relate the Caribbean question to the larger picture of southern economic and political anxieties, and to secession. The core of this superbly documented book is a detailed description of expansionist ideology and activities during the 1850s."--Civil War History A path-breaking work when first published in 1973, The Southern Dream remains the standard work on attempts by the South to spread American slavery into the tropics--Cuba, Mexico, and Central America in particular--before the Civil War. Robert May shows that the South's expansionists had no more success than when they tried to extend slavery westward.  As one after another of their plots failed, southern imperialists lost hope that their labor system might survive in the Union.  Blaming northern Democrats and antislavery Republicans alike for their disappointed dreams, alienated southerners embraced secession as an alternative means to achieving the tropical slave empire that they craved.  Had war not erupted at Fort Sumter, Confederates might have attempted to conquer the Caribbean basin.May's book serves as an important reminder that foreign policy cannot be divorced from the writing of American history, even in regard to seemingly domestic matters like the causes of the Civil War. Contending that America's Manifest Destiny became "sectionalized" in the 1850s, he explains why southerners considered Caribbean expansion so important and shows how southerners used their clout in Washington to initiate diplomatic schemes like the notorious Ostend Manifesto and presidential attempts to buy the slaveholding island of Cuba from Spain.  He also describes southern filibustering plots against Latin American domains, such as the aborted designs on Mexico of the colorful Knights of the Golden Circle and the actual invasions of Central America by native Tennessean William Walker.  Walker struck a major blow for the expansion of slavery when he legalized it during his occupation of Nicaragua. Most important, May relates how Caribbean plots affected American public opinion and ignited sectional friction in congressional debates.  May argues that President-elect Abraham Lincoln might have saved the Union in the winter of 1860-61, had he agreed to last minute concessions facilitating slavery's future expansion towards the tropics.May's fascinating and often surprising account internationalized the causes of the Civil War.  It should be read by anyone who wishes to understand the complex reasons why Americans came to blows with each other in 1861. This reprinting features a new preface by the author, which addresses the latest research on the Caribbean question. Robert E. May is professor of history at Purdue University.

extremely boring. I won't be using this again in class. it focuses on a very interesting period of our history that gets little attention, but discusses latin america purely from an american point of view. there is no voice other than the US present. the students did not enjoy this at all, and class discussion was not productive at all.

History class book list. So much of what I had learned in high school has been forgotten or not even touched on. I found this very interesting and the author made the reading very easy and understandable.

Entertaining and Informative Look at Ballroom Dancing
By Roseann S.
Miss Savoy gives us a very entertaining look at her experiences in the world of competitive ballroom dancing and especially adagio dancing that she has most expereince with.

I found the book very interesting and enjoyable but I think it does not show a lot of the strict competition of international style dancing that most people will encounter if they look for competitions on youtube and perhaps other sources.

I think this book will be even more enjoyable if read in combination with Dance With Me: Ballroom Dancing and the Promise of Instant Intimacy [Hardcover] [2011] Julia A. Ericksen which gives more perspective on other aspects of the ballroom competitive dancing experience. Both books read in tandem will give a much more complete picture.

an authentic voice from the competitive dance floor
By Alexandra Y. Caluen
Ms. Savoy certainly has the bona fides, as a multi-year champion in Adagio (Theatre Arts) at, among other places, the Blackpool Dance Festival. This slim book is an excellent introduction to competitive DanceSport. It does not cover in detail the sort of dancing that produces the current "stars" of ballroom - the professionals serving the various "Strictly Come Dancing" and "Dancing with the Stars" franchises - but has the unmistakeable authenticity you can only produce by having been there and done that.

"Ballroom!" is a personal story, but also a guide to competition dancing. If you enjoy televised dancing and would like to know more about the professionals' experience, this is a great place to start.

Bloomsday 100: Essays on Ulysses (Florida James Joyce), by Morris Beja, Anne Fogarty

"Ulysses is always lauded as one of western culture's most important books. This collection of essays re-asserts the worth and vitality of Joyce's monumental text, not because it is challenging but because it speaks so powerfully to significant present-day issues: anti-Semitism, film, melodrama, fashion, photography, silenced women, advertising, and more."--Jennifer Fraser, author of Rite of Passage in the Narratives of Dante and Joyce

June 16, 2004, was the one hundredth anniversary of Bloomsday, the day that James Joyce's novel Ulysses takes place. To celebrate the occasion, thousands took to the streets in Dublin, following in the footsteps of protagonist Leopold Bloom. The event also was marked by the Bloomsday 100 Symposium, where world-renowned scholars discussed Joyce's seminal work. This volume contains the best, most provocative readings of Ulysses presented at the conference.

The contributors to this volume urge a close engagement with the novel. They offer readings that focus variously on the materialist, historical, and political dimensions of Ulysses. The diversity of topics covered include nineteenth-century psychology, military history, Catholic theology, the influence of early film and music hall songs on Joyce, the post-Ulysses evolution of the one-day novel, and the challenge of discussing such a complex work amongst the sea of extant criticism.

ENLIGHTENING - Modern-day Odysseus, precursor to FINNEGANS WAKE
By James C Brandon
Joyce was 40 yrs old when Ulysses was published, it is a day in the life of a husband and father of Joyce's age (at publication). Joyce loved Dublin and Ireland and though the book was written on the European continent - he wanted to memorialize his birth home (Ireland). The framework of Ulysses is Homer's Odyssey - The Roman Ulysses: 1 Telemachus, 2 Nestor, 3 Proteus, 4 Calypso, 5 Lotus Eaters, 6 Hades, 7 Aeolus, 8 Lestrygonians, 9 Scylla And Charybdis, 10 Wandering Rocks, 11 Sirens, 12 Cyclops, 13 Nausicca, 14 Oxen Of The Sun, 15 Circe, 16 Eumaeus, 17 Ithaca, and 18 Penelope.

Ulysses is the tale of a Modern-day Odysseus, Leopold Bloom in his personal existential/sexual quest. The conclusion of this quest is the quintessential affirmation of humanity, the fundamental family unit - the father, mother, son, and daughter. Like Odysseus, absent from Penelope, traveling the world, for many long years, Leopold Bloom is also absent from his Penelope (in Dublin). Like a traveler (Odysseus), Bloom is sexually absent (abstinent) from Molly “10 years, 5 months and 18 days” (736). Unlike Odysseus, the obstacles Bloom faces are psychological (modern) - internal travails instead of Odysseus' external travails. Bloom's only son’s death has become a psychological barrier; as Molly reflects: “we were never the same since” (778). Yet Bloom is optimistic throughout the work - in regard to the possibility of another child, again Molly: ”Ill give him one more chance” (780). Affirmatively (as we grow to know Molly) we find she has given and is willing to continue to give Bloom “one more chance”. Through the course of the (Dublin) day, Bloom experiences “deep frustration, humiliation, fear, punishment and catharsis” (Herring, p.74). Bloom needs to lead himself back, out of self-deception, fantasy, and frustration to Molly’s (and his marriage) bed.

Bloom’s travails come in the Circe chapter and it is imperative (for Joyce) that as readers, we recognize Joyce’s change from Homer's Odyssey - this is Joyce's major rework, deviating from his Greek predecessor. For Odysseus: insight, understanding, enlightenment, and all importantly direction come to Odysseus in his journey to the (ancient Greek) Underworld. For Bloom, the Hades chapter or “the other world” represents an “emptiness of mind”; Joyce was a man grounded (and devoted) to the present world of man's consciousness and unconsciousness. In Ulysses enlightenment comes in the Circe chapter: described though the Joycean technique of hallucination or the discoveries of the "unconscious mind”. Joyce's Circe chapter (a surrealistic one-act Ibsen-like play) is where Bloom finds self-possession - (Joyce makes) Bloom encounter his own psycho-sexual existential questions, rather than finding life's answers in the dead ghosts of his life (the ancient Greek Hades chapter of the dead past).

In the Circe chapter, Bloom confronts and overcomes every major obstacle in his existential/sexual quest: the Molly he serves in Calypso reappears as Bello the whoremistress, Molly’s letter from Boylan and his from Martha are reworked into a series of seductive letters ending in a trial, his sexual infidelities beginning with Lotty Clarke and ending with Gerty McDowell are relived (importantly balanced by Molly’s infidelities) and reconciled, and lastly, Bloom triumphs over whore, Virgin-Goddess, and most importantly himself. Joyce equanimously gives both Molly and Bloom extramarital sexual infidelities - infidelities known by each of the other (as early as the Calypso chapter) Bloom was conscious of what was to come. Of course there will be resolution in marriage, for Molly only needs to feel that Bloom is willing. As we read, Bloom has undergone the travails of his own mind and has emerged Victorious. He has succeeded in his psycho-sexual existential quest. He has arrived at Molly’s bed. Self-possessed. Victorious. Eager.

Molly "I saw he understood or felt what a woman is and I knew I could always get round him...then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down in to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes. (END)".

After publishing Ulysses, Joyce began FINNEGANS WAKE (FW) - Joyce largely stepped out of one work into his next (and last work). The change Joyce made in FW was instead of using Homer's Ulysses as a framework - FW's framework is Giambattista Vico's "La Scienza Nuova's" 4 cyclic stages of history.

Joyce realized that he ended Ulysses wrongly (not in accordance with the Universe) in Molly's bed - Joyce corrects his mistake in FINNEGANS WAKE by incorporating Vico's revelation of restart / recirculation."HCE day" similar to Bloomsday (roughly 24 hrs): Chronologically FW starts with memories "book I:3" of HCE arrested in front of his gated refuge (from MaMaLuJo) unable to enter, unlike Bloom HCE does not enter through the back door, instead HCE is arrested in hours before dawn. Then memories "book I:4" HCE's psychological musings of past travails/guilts (living death, underworld excursion Ulysses ch Hades) while incarcerated in early hours of morning. Followed by memories "book I:2" HCE walks home through Phoenix Park accosted for the time of day (12 noon) which threatens (real/unreal memories, Ulysses ch Nausicaa) his innocent well-being. These 3 chapters in FW are Joyce's major rework to incorporate Vico's revelation of restart/recirculation into FW, Joyce rewrites 3 chapters of Ulysses: When He is denied Her front door, He is in Hell (on earth), when released (from Hell) His odyssey to Her begins again (with His ever-present accompanying internal travails) for She always knows when He is worthy of Her acceptance (their Paradise).

Then "book I:1" Finnegan's afternoon wake at HCE's tavern and retelling memories (books I:2-4). Inside HCE's tavern (his ship) his patrons talk about his family (Norwegian Captain and the Tailor's Daughter), truthful letters (ALP) and fabricated stories (books I:5-8 & II:3); while the children (Shaun, Shem and Iseult) are in and out of the family tavern/home all day taking their lessons (book II:2) and playing about with their friends (Shem's closing dream, book II:1); HCE, as proprietor, defends himself with a self-deprecating apologia before his intoxicated collapse late night (book II:3). HCE dreams on his tavern floor (book II:4); then dreams in his bed (books III:1-3); before intercourse with his wife ALP (book III:4). HCE & ALP's lovemaking dissolution dream (book IV) to awaken to a new day, Joycean Nirvana is attained by ALP's (& HCE's) awaiting Joyce's God "thunderclap" at the beginning of FW's "book I".

FW is aural (oral) history like Homer's Odessey and Celtic folktales - when one pronounces (phonology) FW's words (aloud) there are more languages than just English; also, when one reads (morphology) FW's words almost all the words are "portmanteaus / neologisms" which gives each of FW's "poly-syncretic" words many meanings (universal impermanence, Heisenberg uncertainty/obscurity), each FW syncretic sentence dozens of possible messages, each FW syncretic paragraph hundreds of possible readings, Joyce's rendering of a more expansive English language and multiplicating universal book with coalescing syncretic themes/stories (that responds/opens to each reader's inquiries). Joyce schooled in Christian Jesuit metaphysics (pushed down into the mindfulness of human consciousness) breathes in the spirit of expansive Celtic (Irish) democratic community tavern life where man's stories of life are told. Tavern life teaches the evolution of Joyce's ten "thunderclaps" (one hundred lettered words) pushing man's (technologic) evolution forward from cave man's tales to modern tv media tales: Indra's thunder upheavals: 1) Emergent human technologies (wheel, cloth, etc.), 2) Women's social/stratifying clothing (i.e. civilization's divisions), 3) Effeminate clerical social control (Buddha, Lao-Tze, Christ, Toltec seers, etc.), 4) Feudal degradation (cities/urban plight), 5) Writings disseminated (Gutenberg's press), 6) Renaissance (blooming informed culture), 7) Radio (instantaneous information), 8) Film (disseminated culture), 9) Reciprocating Engine (democratized travel), 10) TV (instantaneous global media culture). Inside the tavern man learns of the purely human (animal) fall, taken down by another human(s) - like animal taken down on the African savanna. A granular reading of FW can render FW as an updated John Milton's Paradise Lost (regurgitated knowledge from the tree, to affirm man's damnation); however, Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species was published in 1859 and Joyce in FW book II clearly walks Shaun, Shem and Iseult through their earthly evolutionary lifetime travails, our mortality is a consequence of Life's evolution. Every page of FW speaks to man's (unconscious biological survival, conscious "racing competitive" social, contemplative aspirational personal) evolution and to Life recirculating (West meets Dzogchen East a "meeting of metaphysical minds") that binds humanity together into the future. Dzogchen (beyond all dualistic polarities) the heart of human consciousness - Joyce's underlying (subcutaneous) arguments refute the "Western curse of metaphysical/mythological damnation", the curse does not exist in the Eastern mind. Like "counting the number of angels on the head of a pin" (Aquinas 1270) Joyce provides a granular/expansive reading of FW as a "defense against all Western adversity" for our conscious and unconscious Western travails. HCE's angst is caused by his community that imposes a Western curse (damnation) upon him that man is not guilty of...to experience Joycean Nirvana, a defense against this man-made guilt is required - for as Zoroaster revealed cosmogonic dualism, evil is mixed with good in man's everyday universal travails (even the Dalai Lama must defend Nirvana rigorously from the most populous authoritarian state in human history).

Joyce's FW celebrates the Joys of Christian/Buddhist diversity of humanity (expansive human consciousness: Gnostic Norwegian Captain, Shem, Archdruid), Brahma (Finnegan, HCE, Shaun), Divine Women (ALP, Iseult, Nuvoletta), his family - and the Sufferings of the inescapable "evil" of Shiva (Buckley), the debilitating harmful sterile intrusive authoritarian institutionalizing damnation (MaMaLuJo, St. Patrick) by Augustine, the manufactured clerical corruptions identified by Luther et al. (since 367 AD) and the burdens of "survival of the fittest" anxiety (modern commerce) met with a Dzogchen Buddhist stance. The (innocent infant) Norwegian Captain (Krishna, HCE), occasionally defensive (Shiva, HCE), though concretized (Brahma, HCE) by community family life (MaMaLuJo) - through spirits (drink) HCE accesses his spirituality (dreams) and through spiritual (cutting through) love-making with ALP (direct approach) they access (their Krishnas), unification with the Unmanifest. Joyce was a Prophet who consumed Man's conscious and spiritual "thoughts and dreams, history and gossip, efforts and failings" - to reveal the joys (Nirvana) and sufferings (Samsara) of Mankind.

Joyce's FW message: Christian/Buddhist omniscient compassion (Christ/Krishna) is eternally joyful and recirculating. Affirmative family (HCE/Brahma, ALP/Divine woman & children) existentiality: life's biological evolution (sex), modern survival (money), constraining community (Dharma, social evolution) are constantly assaulted by inescapable "aggressive insidious vile" corrupt soul(less/sucking) ossified demonic antipathetic attacks. Joycean Nirvana is attained via the Christian/Buddhist affirmative middle way, "beyond polar opposites" the path of Christ/Buddha.

The Atlantic Slave Trade, by Johannes Postma

In 1502, the first African slaves were taken to Hispaniola. In 1888, Brazil became the last nation in the Western Hemisphere to outlaw slavery. For the nearly 400 years in between, slavery played a major role in linking the histories of Africa, North and South America, and Europe. Beginning with an overview of African slavery in the New World, Postma provides a detailed examination of five separate aspects of the phenomenon:   The capture of slaves and the Middle Passage The identities of the enslaved and their lives after capture The economics of the slave trade The struggle to end slavery The legacy of the slave trade.   Following these extensive analytical essays are biographies of important individuals—both black and white—in the history of the slave trade. Thirteen primary documents written by enslaved Africans and white officials, an annotated bibliography, and a timeline complete the book, making it a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the subject.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-Postma draws on primary sources and current historical scholarship to offer secondary readers and researchers a comprehensive and well-written history. He covers the entire Atlantic slave trade era, from the 1400s to the final abolition of chattel slavery in the New World in 1888. The focus is on Africa and the entire New World. While he describes the many horrors of the Middle Passage, he also examines how the slave trade contributed to the development of the modern international economy. The last chapters discuss the efforts to abolish the slave trade and its legacy. Throughout, Postma documents the sources that support his discussion and conclusions. Chapter notes are supplemented by an extensive annotated bibliography that includes books, articles, films, and electronic resources. The volume concludes with biographical sketches of important people and excerpts from primary documents written by enslaved Africans and white officials. The black-and-white reproductions of period illustrations add little to the text. This title is more comprehensive than R. G. Grant's The African-American Slave Trade (Barron's, 2003) and deserves a place in allcollections.

After decades of bloodshed and famine, the Eritrean-Ethiopian conflict is the longest contemporary war of liberation in Africa. This work examines the nationalist movement in the context of the political and diplomatic struggle, and argues that superpower/UN collusion is partly to blame.

How Eritrea Got the Shaft from the USA, Ethiopia, etc.
By A Customer
This book does a good job of describing how the interests of the Eritrean people were sacrificed in the name of Ethiopian aggrandizement, British post-WW 2 decline, and American Cold War fears. Though Yohannes seems at times to be less than objective, on balance I think he gives a concise picture of the manner in which the so-called "free" world turned its back on Eritrea's right to self-determination, all the while protesting communism's trampling of the same rights. The Eritreans, in fact, have been so scarred psychologically by this hypocrisy that they now have a "bunker" mentality that sees no friends but many potential foes. This in part explains their intransigence towards Ethiopia about a few square miles of worthless desert. This is a good purchase for anyone wanting a basic understanding of the now 50 year old Ethiopian-Eritrean conflict, which appears now to be entering a sixth decade, with no end in sight.

The Chocolate Tree: A Natural History of Cacao, by Allen M. Young

Young provides an overview of the fascinating natural and human history of one of the world’s most intriguing commodities: chocolate. Cultivated for over 1,000 years in Latin America and the starting point for millions of tons of chocolate annually consumed worldwide, cacao beans have been used for beverages, as currency, and for regional trade. After the Spanish brought the delectable secret of the cacao tree back to Europe in the late 16th century, its seeds created and fed an insatiable worldwide appetite for chocolate. The Chocolate Tree chronicles the natural and cultural history of Theobroma cacao and explores its ecological niche. Tracing cacao’s journey out of the rain forest, into pre-Columbian gardens, and then onto plantations adjacent to rain forests, Young describes the production of this essential crop, the environmental price of Europeanized cultivation, and ways that current reclamation efforts for New World rain forests can improve the natural ecology of the cacao tree. Amid encounters with sloths, toucans, butterflies, giant tarantula hawk wasps, and other creatures found in cacao groves, Young identifies a tiny fly that provides a vital link between the chocolate tree and its original rain forest habitat. This discovery leads him to conclude that cacao trees in cultivation today may have lost their original insect pollinators due to the plant’s long history of agricultural manipulation. In addition to basic natural history of the cacao tree and the relationship between cacao production systems and the preservation of the rain forest, Young also presents a history of the use of cacao, from the archaeological evidence of Mesoamerica to contemporary evidence of the relationship between chocolate consumption and mental and physical health.A rich concoction of cultural and natural history, archaeological evidence, botanical research, environmental activism, and lush descriptions of a contemporary adventurer’s encounters with tropical wonders, The Chocolate Tree offers an appreciation of the plant and the environment that provide us with this Mayan “food of the gods.”

An important book but not an easy read
By Adrenalin Streams
If you are interested in learning about the natural history of the cacao tree then this book is essential reading. However, if you are not a scientist then you will find it hard going at times. There is a lot of information in this book but no easy way to discover it without reading every page. The author tells the story of cacao almost like a travelogue, and the book lacks a summary section at the end of each chapter of the findings, theories and conclusions of the author. But, these criticisms aside, I would still recommend The Chocolate Tree to anyone wanting to understand more of the science behind cacao. All the information about the development of the cacao tree from its wild origins in the rainforest to modern day plantations is fascinating, as are Allen's experiments to find out why natural pollination levels of cacao trees are so low. Stick with the book and you will be rewarded, but the author could have made it much more accessible. One last point - there is an excellent bibliography at the end which will be welcome for anyone wishing to read further into the subject.

Everypage was printed upside down. They are in order from the front of the book to the back, but every page is upside down. SO if you turn the book over and try to read the pages start with the highest numbered page and decrease.

The Generalship of Muhammad: Battles and Campaigns of the Prophet of Allah, by Russ Rodgers

His campaigns, military thought, and insurgent strategy

"An excellent analysis of Muhammad as a general, placing his battles within the context of military history, and a good introduction to the life of the founder of Islam."--David Cook, author of Understanding Jihad

"Provides an essential understanding to those wanting to know the history that shapes modern insurgencies."--Maj. Christopher Johnson, U.S. Army, policy advisor to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense

There are many biographies of the Prophet, and they tend to fall into three categories: pious works that emphasize the virtues of the early Islamic community, general works for non-Muslim or non-specialist readers, and source-critical works that grapple with historiographical problems inherent in early Islamic history. In The Generalship of Muhammad, Russ Rodgers charts a new path by merging original sources with the latest in military theory to examine Muhammad's military strengths and weaknesses.
Incorporating military, political, and economic analyses, Rodgers focuses on Muhammad’s use of insurgency warfare in seventh-century Arabia to gain control of key cities such as Medina. Seeking to understand the operational aspects of these world-changing battles, he provides battlefield maps and explores the supply and logistic problems that would have plagued any military leader at the time.
Rodgers explains how Muhammad organized his forces and gradually built his movement against sporadic resistance from his foes. He draws from the hadith literature to shed new light on the nature of the campaigns. He examines the Prophet's intelligence network and the employment of what would today be called special operations forces. And he considers the possibility that Muhammad received outside support to build and maintain his movement as a means to interdict trade routes between the Byzantine Empire and the Sasanid Persians.

From the Inside Flap

There are many biographies of the Prophet, and they tend to fall into three categories: pious works that emphasize the virtues of the early Islamic community, general works for non-Muslim or non-specialist readers, and source-critical works that grapple with historiographical problems inherent in early Islamic history.
The Generalship of Muhammad charts a new path by merging original sources with the latest in military theory in order to highlight Muhammad’s military strengths and weaknesses. This military biography of the Prophet of Allah is also an examination of how weaker forces can engage and defeat stronger opponents. Muhammad’s campaigns, military thought, and strategy are examined in order to trace his rise from humble beginnings to the creation of a movement that would lead him to become the virtual ruler of Arabia.
Incorporating military, political, and economic analyses, Russ Rodgers investigates Muhammad’s use of insurgency warfare in seventh-century Arabia to gain control of key cities such asMadinah and Makkah. Seeking to understand the operational aspects of these world-changing clashes, Rodgers provides battlefield maps and explores the supply and logistic problems that would have plagued any military leader at the time.
Rodgers reveals how Muhammad organized his forces and gradually built his movement against sporadic resistance from his foes. He draws from the hadith literature to shed new light on the nature of the campaigns and examines the Prophet’s intelligence network and the employment of what would today be called special operations forces. Moreover, Rodgers considers the possibility that Muhammad received outside support to build and maintain his movement as a means to interdict trade routes between the Byzantine Empire and the Sasanid Persians.
Rodgers deftly demonstrates how the combination of philosophical, economic, and social pressure on the people of Makkah would eventually force them to succumb to Muhammad’s call to the sole worship of Allah and acceptance of himself as Allah’s last prophet.

Russ Rodgers is a command historian with the U.S. Army and a former adjunct professor of history. He is the author of Fundamentals of Islamic Asymmetric Warfare: A Documentary Analysis of the Principles of Muhammad.

Man of the Match
By Christian Potholm
An extremely valuable look at the rise of Islam through the generalship of Muhammad. A stunning story, well told. Asserts that Muhammad's declaration that only Allah was to be worshiped was truly revolutionary, asking individuals to give up idols and family/clan loyalties for a new monotheism. He also points out how small was the percentage of Muslims even in Medina in the beginning and how narrow were the margins of victory at Badr (623) and The Trench (627) and the margin of defeat at Uhud (624). There is a fascinating chart on page 160 showing the growth in the use of horses in force projection (as opposed to camels) and their role in the expansion of the Muslim world, from 2 horses at Badr to 10,000 at Tabuk (630). Muslim "light horse" was to then the rule vast stretches of the Middle East and North Africa. Overall, Muhammad won three major battles and five sieges, losing one battle (Uhud) and failing at one siege (al-Ta'if). Rodgers also asserts that "Muhammad's campaigns came with a hefty price tag, much greater than many would assess today." But, says the author, "In this way, despite any weakness exhibited, Muhammad fulfilled the most critical dictum of warfare: he compelled his enemies to do his will." This is a most useful book for anyone seeking to understand the military rise of Islam.

Asymmetrical Islamic Warfare
By T.A.L. Dozer
The author Russ Rodgers has done it again with this "sequel" to his first book, "Fundamentals of Islamic Asymmetric Warfare: A Documentary Analysis of the Principles of Muhammad," this book was excellent but unfortunately is out-of-print, with used copies going for a crazy amount of money, Russ you need to re-release this book! ASAP!

This current title, deals with the insurgency campaign to dominate Makkah and ultimately Arabia. This dives into the Muhammad's philosophy and organization to execute this insurgency. This book ties Muhammad's philosophical views into the battles, reviewing how each influenced each other. The intent of the book is to focus on "how" Muhammad campaigned, fighting by irregular/unconventional warfare and won. The author also notes that in this research the Quran was referenced sparingly because it is not the best or most accurate source of information on the life of Muhammad. This was surprisingly refreshing to me.

This book does an excellent job tracing Muhammad's campaigns, military thought, tactical aspects and strategy of the rarely explained or studied generalship of this prophet. Overall this is a very good book that reads well for the layman and professional historian. However, you do not need to understand Islam or have a military background to enjoy this book.
