With dramatic color and black-and-white photographs of ninety-three pieces of art, African Art at the Harn Museum introduces the notable collection of West African art from the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art.
In the traditional view of many Africans, the spiritual and temporal worlds depend upon each other for companionship and material well-being. As the inhabitants of either realm cross and recross their world boundaries, art objects function as intimate links between the two domains, allowing both spirit and human to see and to manipulate each other. This work specifically addresses the role of the art object--a bowl from Cameroon, a mask from Burkina Faso or Sierra Leone, an ancestral altar from Nigeria, a fertility figure from Ghana--as a medium through which each world gains entrance into the other.
Poynor's essay presents each work in its geographic and cultural context. Line drawings and abundant field photographs enhance the text and support the idea that the objects assist communication between two worlds.
Robin Poynor, associate professor of art at the University of Florida, is guest curator of the "Spirit Eyes, Human Hands" exhibition of the university's Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art. He is the former curator of the Tweed Museum at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. He has written principally on the art of the Yoruba Kingdom of Owo, Nigeria, where he did field research, and he has curated a number of exhibitions of African art, writing essays, catalogues, and display texts for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Birmingham Museum of Art, and Indiana University Art Museum. He has published extensively in African Arts.

A standard African art catalog has developed over the last 25 years. It has a statement by either a collector or museum director, a brief introduction commenting on the history of African art appreciation by one of several major names in African art scholarship, essays on some aspect of the "nature" of African art and style areas, and catalog entries on objects that invariably are wood sculptures from West and Central Africa. With dozens of such catalogs in existence, distinguishing among them becomes difficult. It is not this collection of objects, which are not unique or otherwise distinctive, but Poyner's text that raises this catalog above the ordinary. His discussion of the religious nature of much of African art is as well stated as anything else that has ever appeared in print, while his geographic survey-which places the objects in their cultural milieu-is more thoroughly developed than most other catalogs. Academic libraries with an African art emphasis will definitely want to acquire this book.

nice book including a good collection of African art

This is a very good book about the Harn Collection and would be particularly helpful if you live in the vicinity of the museum. It's not a big book and it doesn't have a lot of beautiful color photos, but it is well organized and includes examples of tribal art that are not the same pieces that are so often repeated in numerous books. That's refreshing. I'd like to visit the museum in Florida now that I've seen the collection photos. While the collection is predominantly wood, there are some excellent ivory pieces, as well as African bronze and soapstone examples. The author does a good job, in my opinion, exploring the roles of the "art" in the life of the tribe. I think it's particularly helpful when a book is able to include photos of masks, headdresses, house posts, etc., in their original setting, as well as in an isolated museum state.
