The Plot to Get Bill Gates: An Irreverent Investigation of the World's Richest Man... and the People Who Hate Him, by Gary Rivlin

To understand the magnitude of Bill Gates, one must first understand the people who hate him, most of whom suffer from an acute case of "Bill Envy."

The Plot to Get Bill Gates is the true, hilarious story of a loosely knit cabal of Silicon Valley's wealthiest and most successful leaders and their quest to defeat the richest man in the world. These leaders are known within Microsoft as Captain Ahab's Club for their self-destructive fixation with harpooning the Great White Whale of Redmond, all two hundred pounds and $50 billion of him. Acclaimed journalist Gary Rivlin tells their tale as a high-tech variation on Moby-Dick, and by taking us deep inside the world of Gates and his enemies, he vividly reveals their consuming obsession.

Lead players in The Plot are Lawrence Ellison of Oracle, Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems, Ray Noorda of Novell, Marc Andreessen and James Barksdale of Netscape, Philippe Kahn of Borland, and Gary Kildall (the unsung programmer who could have been Gates), with special guest appearances by venture capitalist John Doerr, consumer activist Ralph Nader, zealous attorney Gary Reback, and the Fraternal Order of Antitrust Lawyers. The author describes each man's ill-fated attempt at besting Gates, who seems to become bigger, hungrier, and more dangerous after each attack.

Rivlin also conducts an in-depth investigation of Gates himself, examining each crucial step in the ascension of the slope-shouldered billionaire with bad hair and unearthing the most telling details to explain why Gates is so rich and we aren't. (The short answer: monomania.) Rivlin concludes with an illuminating analysis of Microsoft's latest upgrade of its CEO, Gates 3.1, which seems to be operating with fewer bugs than previous incarnations.

Gary Rivlin's reporting is irreverent and intellectually independent, free of the romanticized portraits and techno-hype perpetuated by many in the media. As an award-winning political reporter, he brings a fresh perspective to the avaricious, bloodthirsty behavior of these new icons. The result is a savagely funny morality play about big business at the century's end.

Amazon.com Review
Money and success do strange things to people, especially when they're not their own. Perhaps no better example of this phenomenon is Silicon Valley's obsession with Microsoft and its leader, Bill Gates, an obsession that Gary Rivlin examines with great relish and in great detail in The Plot to Get Bill Gates. Rivlin discovers a "king-sized obsession among one-dimensional workaholics" that's known in the industry as "Bill Envy," a phenomenon that has destroyed companies, inspired dozens of jokes (e.g., "How many Microsoft engineers does it take to change a light bulb? None. Bill Gates will just redefine DarknessTM as the new industry standard"), and for some raises the possibility of a wider conspiracy that pits Microsoft against everyone else--Silicon Valley, the Justice Department, even Ralph Nader.

From Gates's awkward adolescence to his position as the world's richest man, Rivlin takes a deep look into his character and uses him as a means to reveal the character of those that oppose him, a drama that he likens to that in Moby Dick. Unlike other books about Microsoft (The Microsoft File, How the Web Was Won, Barbarians Led by Bill Gates), Rivlin's tries not to take sides. Nevertheless, the Captain Ahabs (Ray Noorda, Scott McNealy, Larry Ellison, among others) come off looking less flawed, but certainly not as smart or as calculating or as dangerous as the white whale (Gates). While most of this material will be familiar to anyone who follows Microsoft and its competitors, Rivlin manages to keep the pages turning with dozens of entertaining anecdotes and stories about Gates and his enemies. The Plot to Get Bill Gates is a must for anyone who loves a good old-fashioned high-tech food fight. --Harry C. Edwards

From Publishers Weekly
Gates bashing has by now become an obsession in some parts of the world (at least in Silicon Valley, where rival tycoons resent him, and in the Justice Department, where antitrust lawyers burn the midnight oil). Though Rivlin (Drive-By; Fire on the Prairie) takes his shots at Gates, he also takes aim at his rivals, the heads of companies like Novell, IBM and Sun. He chalks up hatred of Gates and Microsoft to a "king-sized obsession among one-dimensional workaholics who'll do practically anything to win"Amaking Gates haters sound a lot like the tyrannical drone they themselves make Gates out to be. Rivlin has little tolerance for Gates's famous arrogance and explicitly takes apart Gates's reputation as a coding whiz. On the other hand, he is frustrated with Gates's complaining competitors, seeing them as doing little more than making business personal. Rivlin's writing, never less than lively, is sometimes truly funny. His thesisAthat the little guys banded together to slay the Microsoft dragon when they should have been minding their own businessesAis persuasive. He has succeeded in writing a disinterested account of the software wars of the 1990s: this is neither a defense of Microsoft nor a screed against Gates. But it is also a little uninterested, as well. Rivlin appears more concerned with repeating the epithets the moguls have flung at each other than with the substance of their business. As entertaining as the book is, many readers will find Rivlin's pox-on-all-their-houses attitude too smug by half. Author tour. (July)

From Library Journal
In a world of high finance and sometimes large egos, it's easy to hate the richest man in the worldAand many in that world have no trouble passionately hating Bill Gates. Bay Area journalist Rivlin has covered this world for several years, and he draws on this experienceAincluding a press visit to Gates's homeAin this account of how Gates has drawn attacks from obsessed competing executives, users of his products (and adamant nonusers), consumer advocate Ralph Nader, and the U.S. Department of Justice. The book's scope is broader than the title implies; it treats a number of Microsoft's competitors in some depth and provides some recent history of the computer industry. Throughout, Rivlin entertains with a light writing style and the promised irreverence, concluding with a brief set of jokes about Gates and Microsoft. Down and out in Silicon Valley.
By Jack Jalove
This book contains the single funniest comment I've ever read. It's in the note at the bottom of page 260.
And oh yeah the rest of the pages are worth reading as well altho -- seriously -- I found myself getting depressed at reading how Gates and his company annihilate each rival like an army of ants devours enemies along its path. By book's end, Ellison's line about "the four stages of Microsoft" (p. 249) sure rang true.

Accurate + Timely + Fast Reading = Winner
By A Customer
You will feel like you were a fly on the walls for the past decade in the fast paced fields of computer software and the internet. While others have tackled this topic, Rivlin's strict attention to the details and facts, his unwillingness to be swayed by anecdotes, plus his ability to retell a story, make for a more enjoyable fast read on a variety of levels. These corporate leaders are not driven by altruistic pursuits for the betterment of mankind, these are businesses run by highly influential men driven by money, ego and power. I now chuckle at PR fluff stories about Gates, Ellison and McNeally in magazines and newspapers. This book is so timely it seems as if it was written days, not months ago - the author's conclusions are constantly being validated by the daily headlines. Can't wait for his next book! Enjoy it.

Incisive reporting, powerful narrative, can't put it down.
By A Customer
Great read. The story of all those who've tried to take on the Great White Whale from Redmond--to prove themselves better or smarter than Bill Gates--and failed. It's a tale about the egos of these corporate moguls, including Gates, who comes off as wise beyond his years in all things business but as 10-year-old emotioanlly. Makes you realize these guys aren't role model successes but the adolescent whiners we all hated as kids. Rivlin shows they are all about whose is bigger, and money doesn't buy you personality or happiness. None of `em are leaving the earth a better place. Oh, yeah, the author's also uncovers that Gates was never very much of a programmer to boot.

Race in the American South: From Slavery to Civil Rights, by David Brown, Clive Webb

This is the first book to offer an over-arching view of the ways race has indelibly shaped the history of the United States. David Brown and Clive Webb trace the turbulent course of southern race relations from the colonial origins of the plantation system to the maturation of slavery in the nineteenth century, through the rise of a new racial order during the Civil War and Reconstruction, to the civil rights movement of the twentieth century. While the authors recognize the very different racial balances in different parts of the region, the divisions among southern whites, and the non-racial basis of many aspects of southern distinctiveness, they convincingly put forward the case that the driving engine of Southern history is the attempt to resolve the dilemmas posed by the racial issue. They focus on the omnipresent racial basis of the changes over time in the region's politics, economy, and social structure, as well as other main areas of study in American history including culture, class, and gender.

Chapter One

All Eyes on the Road Ahead

Exhale. The eye of the financial hurricane has passed. The storm that hit in the summer of 2008 and continued to batter the global economy and your personal finances through 2009 is slowly—ever so slowly—receding. The worst is over. You survived. We survived.

Now comes the really hard work: rebuilding.

IRAs, 401(k)s and 529 college savings plans must be rebuilt in the wake of the devastating bear market.

Budgets have to be put in place that account for the new world order in which the penalties for having credit card debt and no emergency savings are unthinkable. You know as well as I do: You must find a way to get rid of the debt and build your savings.

Your approach to homeownership must be rebuilt to reflect this simple truth: A home is not a liquid investment that will always rise in value. It is shelter, first and foremost. It can also be a terrific asset, but only if you approach it with clear-eyed expectations.

Most important, your sense of security must be rebuilt. There’s the not so small issue of our collective national bill for what has happened; the current $1.4 trillion federal deficit is expected to rise to $9 trillion by 2019. But on a more personal note you are grappling with the realization that your pre-crash way of life is over. What worked—or more correctly, what you thought worked—is gone, leaving you without your bearings in these new times.

Now that we have weathered the worst of the storm, you’re onto the next challenge: Where do we go from here?

Toward Lasting Security

When I wrote the original Action Plan for 2009, it was with a laser focus on getting you through the crisis as it was unfolding. My goal was to give you the tools to find your footing in a world where the ground was shifting—and shifting violently— beneath you. As the year progressed and I heard from so many of you—in person, via Twitter, and through my CNBC show—I realized that you were hungry for more than crisis-management strategies. You have moved on to future management. You want to know the right actions to take in order to build lasting security.

You have been shaken to your core. Whether it is because of fear, regret, or remorse, living through the tumult of the financial meltdown has given you newfound purpose. You want to be in control, you want to get it right. No more fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, enjoy-the-ride-while-it-lasts mentality. No more trusting that things will work out, that someone else—your financial advisor, the regulators in Washington—have your back. You understand what is at stake. You are personally accountable and responsible for building and sustaining financial security. You just need a new game plan to transform your resolve into reality.

New Rules for New Times

Because so much has changed in the world and in your worldview, I decided to publish a new Action Plan. I think of it as Action Plan v. 2.0: The Long-Term View. I have updated the information and advice to take into account changes that have occurred since the fall of 2008, such as new pro-consumer credit card legislation and the Treasury Department’s broad Making Home Affordable initiative designed to keep more Americans from losing their homes. Each chapter now begins with a fresh introduction focused on “New Rules for New Times.” During the heat of the crisis my advice was to show you how to keep your money safe and secure. That’s still in play, of course, but now it’s time to move forward with strategies that will build security for you this year, next year, and beyond. That requires an understanding of what works now—and what doesn’t—in every aspect of your financial life, from credit management to retirement planning to saving for a child’s college education.

Three universal rules govern all the specific advice in the following chapters:

Rule #1: Let go of the past. There is no way you can move forward if you are still holding on to what “used to be.” As in: “My 401(k) used to be worth . . .” or “My house used to be valued at . . .” or “My job used to be secure” or “My credit card rate used to be 5%.” You can’t get where you want to go—where you need to go—if you are looking in the rearview mirror. All eyes on the road ahead. All decisions must be based on what is real today, not what used to be.

Rule #2: Plan on moderation. As I write this in the fall of 2009, the tea leaves suggest that the official recession is over and the recovery is beginning to gain momentum. But it will be a recovery of moderation, a state of affairs that has been dubbed “the new normal.” Instead of growing at the 3% annual clip that persisted for the past few decades, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to rise at a more moderate 2% rate in the new normal. That slower growth will ripple throughout the economy and your finances. Stock returns are expected to be more moderate, as are the prospects for home values. And without a booming economy, higher unemployment could be a fixture of the new normal; businesses are expected to take a slow-go approach to increasing their payroll as they grapple with the ramifications of more moderate growth and profits. New times indeed.

I also want you to understand that while the worst is over, we are not completely out of the woods. To repeat what I said a year ago: I expect we will be on a roller coaster until 2014 or 2015, because the markets, the economy, and the entire global financial system will need time to fully digest the toxic assets that still abound on many balance sheets.

Rule #3: Respect risk. Absent from the conversation throughout the stock and real estate bubbles was this crucial calculation: “What is the risk?” It’s as if everyone refused to entertain the possibility that risk existed. During the Internet stock bubble, you bought into the argument that we were at the dawn of paradigm shift—remember how often we heard that one?—that would see market gains more than double the historical rate and sustain them. When the 2000–2003 bear market hit, you were shocked—shocked!—to see your stock portfolio get creamed. And it never occurred to you, during the real estate bubble, that home values would ever—could ever—fall. It wasn’t just you; the trends and data Wall Street used to fuel much of the real estate mania didn’t even address the possibility that home values could decline! And let’s just say that Washington regulators also seemed to be asleep at the wheel in terms of managing systemic risk.

So much of the carnage could have been avoided if every one of us—individuals and institutions—had respected risk. Notice I said respect, not avoid. The goal is to stop at every juncture and make sure you understand the potential risk, and then make a conscious and deliberate decision on how to mitigate that risk. Owning a home is very risky when done with an exotic mortgage whose initial rate is artificially low but can skyrocket when it resets. Owning a home with a fixed-rate mortgage in which the monthly amount due is the same in month one as in month 360 (30 years down the line) is a whole lot less risky. An IRA invested 100% in stocks when you are in your 50s or 60s is very risky. An IRA that holds bonds and cash is a whole lot less risky.

The call to action is that you must be your own risk manager. Yes, we all should expect Washington regulators to do a better job, and let’s hope they will. But you can’t afford to rely on this; you must assess your own tolearnce for risk and understand the stakes. Your own resolve and vigilance will keep you from being hoodwinked by the next bubble. That’s right—I said the next bubble. Bubbles have long been a part of our history, for better or worse. That doesn’t mean they have to threaten your financial life; it is up to you whether you buy into them or choose to watch from the sidelines.

Timeless Advice - Yet Nothing New from Orman
By TW
Suze Orman has always offered exceptionally sound financial advice based on personal accountability and moderation. The New Rules for New Times stays true to this message by providing an abundance of strategies for a large assortment of potential financial issues.

The format of the book is very straight forward, containing descriptions of financial situations followed by immediate action plans. This approach permits one to immediately focus on those areas that are most personally relevant. Suze also includes a chapter on introducing finance to children that any parent should be aware of. If this book is your only introduction to Suze Orman, you will be served well.

I have always considered Suze's advice indispensible and a representation of the best from the financial community; however, I question the need for this book on the basis that her message has been made clear in past books. I read this book earnestly looking for something new and discovered only a rehashing of the same message she has always given; leaving me wondering if her desire to sell another book trumped her ability to produce new content.

The book begins with the statement that "the financial hurricane has passed", leading with the notion that we now need new rules. Yet have Suze's rules not always been sound? Does Suze believe her rules regarding accountability, moderation, and respect for risk, rules that have been the cornerstone of her financial advice for years, suddenly now requires upgrading? The realty is her advice is as sound today as it was ten years ago, yet the implication is that we now need a new book with new rules.

Orman's look back on recent events and financial turmoil has supposedly given her a new outlook; yet what does this say of her foresight? If Suze can be certain that the worst of the financial turmoil is behind us now, why was she completely blindsided like nearly all of us when the market turned just two years ago? If she was unable to anticipate the dangers then, why would we have confidence in her assertion that there is smoother sailing ahead?

The reality is Suze's message doesn't need updating and she doesn't need to offer anything new, she simply needs to remind people of why her guidance is sound. Perhaps this approach might not sell as many books but it is a message that is better suited to serve readers than just reprinting the same general material with a different cover year after year.

I really believe Suze Orman and her financial guidance is a huge benefit to society, but this book is just not worthwhile. The reality is Suze Orman deserves glowing reviews for her work in financial community, but I would avoid this book and seek out one of Orman's core books such as the Suze Orman Financial Guidebook.

Sound Advice for New Times
By Alexa Verde
Frankly, I think Suze Orman is one of the best voices in the financial community and I am a fan of her show, so buying this book was a no-brainer for me. SUZE ORMAN'S ACTION PLAN indeed contains a great amount of useful and updated information on personal finance, and I do not regret picking it up. However, for those who are looking for a book by Suze after watching her show, I'd recommend some of Suze's earlier works, THE COURAGE TO BE RICH, THE 9 STEPS TO FINANCIAL FREEDOM, or WOMEN & MONEY. While the advice in SUZE ORMAN'S ACTION PLAN is sound and relevant to current times, I did not feel it surpassed one of her earlier books on the quantity and quality of useful information. That said, I'm still a great fan of Suze!

Not for everyone...
By Gillian Willis
It seemed to be more of the same information that you can get from hearing her talk on tv. And, it is not for someone trying to repair their credit after suffering a change in circumstances due to the new economy. She had no advice for such a person. Instead, it is for someone with a decent job and in a fairly good financial position, who just needs a little help to make better choices.

"An outstanding resource for anyone interested in the biology of birds in Florida and nearby states . . . a truly exceptional work that will be used for decades."--William R. Davidson and M. Page Luttrell, Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study, University of Georgia

This distinctive reference is the first to present all available information on the various parasites, diseases, and other factors that cause sickness and death in Florida's wild birds, with an emphasis on distribution, prevalence, and significance.
Organized by the host species of bird rather than by disease agent, each chapter is preceded by an introduction discussing the population and survival status of the bird or bird group. Appropriate reviews and bibliographies are noted along with references to hematology, serum chemistry, nutrition, and physiological topics. Each introduction is followed by sections on the various morbidity and mortality factors, disease agents, and conditions: starvation, human-related trauma, predation, electrocution, brood parasitism, inclement weather, chemical contaminants, neoplasia, anomalies, biotoxins, viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoans, helminths, and arthropods. The distribution, prevalence, and intensity of each disease are given, followed by the significance of the disease to bird populations as well as to public health.

In addition to providing a database of information needed for the management and conservation of Florida's unique avian community, this book will be an exceptional resource for wildlife biologists and ecologists, veterinary practitioners, animal health researchers, state and federal public health officials, and naturalists who by vocation or avocation are interested in wild birds.

Donald J. Forrester is professor of pathobiology at the University of Florida. He is the author of Parasites and Diseases of Wild Mammals in Florida (UPF, 1992). Marilyn G. Spalding is associate scientist in pathobiology at the University of Florida.

Excellent coverage of parasites, diseases, and tissue pesticide levels in Florida birds
By Christopher Blanar
Excellent coverage of the topic. A thorough review covering a wide range of birds from throughout the state, with an emphasis on the northwestern parts of the state. Although the title of the book doesn't make this clear, it also contains extensive information on pesticide levels in the various species, which might be of considerable interest to some readers. The information might be somewhat dated but this book is a fantastic reference.

Darker Than Amber: A Travis McGee Novel, by John D. MacDonald

From a beloved master of crime fiction, Darker Than Amber is one of many classic novels featuring Travis McGee, the hard-boiled detective who lives on a houseboat.

A fishing trip is anything but relaxing when Travis McGee is involved. As McGee and his friend Meyer settle down to some midnight casting, a woman falls into the water from the bridge above them. Her name is Evangeline, and the hints she gives about the events leading to her near drowning suggest a less than pristine past. But McGee has saved her, and now he wants to see her make a new life—even if it means confronting a gang of murderers that makes his blood run cold.

“John D. MacDonald is a shining example for all of us in his field.”—Mary Higgins Clark

Evangeline may be the intended target in a complex scheme, but she’s no ordinary victim. Behind her darker than amber eyes is a woman who lures men onto her boat and robs them, throwing them overboard when she’s done with them. And now she’s enlisted the resistant Travis and Meyer to rescue her “savings” from her partners in crime.

When Evangeline winds up dead, McGee and Meyer must get involved. But the stakes are high—and Evangeline may not be the only casualty of her cruel game.

From Booklist
There are two very good things about this seventh entry in the Travis McGee series. The first is the opening line: “We were about to give up and call it a night when somebody dropped the girl off the bridge.” That’s good, very good, but the second thing is even better: after a couple of brief cameos, Meyer, the hirsute economist and resident guru to the beach denizens of Bahia Mar Marina, who lives aboard The John Maynard Keynes (birthed a couple of slips down from McGee’s Busted Flush), takes his first turn as a fully fledged supporting character. A McGee novel is never less than entertaining, but the books in which Meyer has a substantial role are always a cut above. Here’s McGee describing his pal: “You can watch the Meyer Magic at work and not know how it’s done. He has the size and pelt of the average Adirondack black bear. He can walk a beach, go into any bar, cross any playground, and acquire people the way blue serge picks up lint, and the new friends believe they have known him forever.” Consider yourself a piece of lint because after encountering blue-serge Meyer, you, too, will want to sit cross-legged at his feet and listen to him opine about the world—something he does plenty of in the course of helping McGee help the girl who was tossed off the bridge. (The pair were wrapping up a night’s snook fishing and happened to be idling their boat under the bridge from which the woman was thrown.) It turns out the nearly drowned victim is no ordinary beach girl but, rather, a piece of bait in a deadly cruise-ship scam in which pigeons are plucked from the flock, shorn of their cash, and unceremoniously tossed overboard. The lady wants out of the game, and McGee and Meyer set out to help her, which requires their booking a Caribbean cruise themselves and outconning the cons. McGee on a commercial cruise ship seems wrong in a hundred different ways, but it does give MacDonald the opportunity to decry the spectacle of hundreds of overstuffed, sunburned Iowans waddling about a lumbering, creaking vessel in search of the next buffet. This is a pivotal entry in the series, though, not because of the story but because it gets Meyer into the game and gives the sedentary intellectual a chance to develop his con-man chops. As McGee explains it, he needs Meyer’s “orderly brain . . . to balance the McGee habit of bulling my way in and breaking the dishes.” --Bill Ott

Review
Praise for John D. MacDonald and the Travis McGee novels

“The great entertainer of our age, and a mesmerizing storyteller.”—Stephen King

“My favorite novelist of all time . . . All I ever wanted was to touch readers as powerfully as John D. MacDonald touched me. No price could be placed on the enormous pleasure that his books have given me. He captured the mood and the spirit of his times more accurately, more hauntingly, than any ‘literature’ writer—yet managed always to tell a thunderingly good, intensely suspenseful tale.”—Dean Koontz

“To diggers a thousand years from now, the works of John D. MacDonald would be a treasure on the order of the tomb of Tutankhamen.”—Kurt Vonnegut

“A master storyteller, a masterful suspense writer . . . John D. MacDonald is a shining example for all of us in the field. Talk about the best.”—Mary Higgins Clark

“A dominant influence on writers crafting the continuing series character . . . I envy the generation of readers just discovering Travis McGee, and count myself among the many readers savoring his adventures again.”—Sue Grafton

“One of the great sagas in American fiction.”—Robert B. Parker

“Most readers loved MacDonald’s work because he told a rip-roaring yarn. I loved it because he was the first modern writer to nail Florida dead-center, to capture all its languid sleaze, racy sense of promise, and breath-grabbing beauty.”—Carl Hiaasen

“The consummate pro, a master storyteller and witty observer . . . John D. MacDonald created a staggering quantity of wonderful books, each rich with characterization, suspense, and an almost intoxicating sense of place. The Travis McGee novels are among the finest works of fiction ever penned by an American author and they retain a remarkable sense of freshness.”—Jonathan Kellerman

“What a joy that these timeless and treasured novels are available again.”—Ed McBain

“Travis McGee is the last of the great knights-errant: honorable, sensual, skillful, and tough. I can’t think of anyone who has replaced him. I can’t think of anyone who would dare.”—Donald Westlake

“There’s only one thing as good as reading a John D. MacDonald novel: reading it again. A writer way ahead of his time, his Travis McGee books are as entertaining, insightful, and suspenseful today as the moment I first read them. He is the all-time master of the American mystery novel.”—John Saul

Stronger and stronger...
By Cynthia K. Robertson
Travis McGee is at it again in John D. MacDonald's 7th book in the McGee series, Darker Than Amber. McGee and his sidekick, Meyer, are minding their own business when a case is pretty much dropped in their laps. As the two men are fishing while tied up to a bridge, a woman is thrown off the bridge and sinks right in front of them like a stone. McGee dives overboard and is able to rescue the woman-despite the fact that her feet are wired to a cement block. The woman, Vangie, turns out to be a high-priced prostitute who was involved in a scam gone bad. It takes sometime, but McGee and Meyer are finally able to get the gist of Vangie's story, and they of course decide to help.

MacDonald does his usual job of providing a great tale of mystery, murder and intrigue. But one of the things I most enjoyed about Darker than Amber is that after having several cameo appearances in earlier books, we finally get to meet a fleshed-out Meyer. McGee and Meyer perform a good Dr. Watson/Sherlock Holmes routine, and their camaraderie rivals many of the other detective-sidekick combinations including Spenser and Hawk, and Poirot and Captain Hastings.

I am now 1/3 of the way through this 21 book series, and I have not been disappointed in a one. In fact, MacDonald just gets stronger and stronger with each subsequent book. It won't be long until I finish the entire series.

The Best of the Series
By JW
I've read almost all of the Travis M series and I believe this is the best one of the lot (Dreadful Lemon Sky and Dress Her in Indigo get very honorable mentions). The plot is a bit improbable but once you buy into it (hey a lot of Crazy stuff happens to Trav), this book really takes off. The real star is McGee and his insights into women and the dark recesses of the human mind. It's not real deep but deeper than your average paperback hero. If you don't like this one, you won't like the others.

The ocean as a metaphor for life
By A Customer
Travis & Meyer are midnight fishing aspart of a recreational cruise on the Busted Flush. They witness an attempted murder, and effect a rescue. The title refers to the rescuee, a girl whose eyes, as McGee notes, are "darker than amber"; McDonald leaves the reader to discover that her soul is considerably darker than amber, too.
After her recovery, she decides to reclaim money earned with her former associates; her greed allows her old cohorts to silence her permanently. MCGee & Meyer had learned the girl was part of an elaborate lonely heart sting, baiting well-to-do men, reeling in their money, and throwing their bodiesinto the sea. McGee metes out justicein the name of selfdefense & in memory of the numerous men murdered aspart of this scam.
Until the vividly recorded rescue, the story moves quickly, almost likethe tide coming in. After the rescue, the McDonald philosophy on the dark side of life is woven into the slowly unraveling plot. The writing is full of local color, witty dialogue, McGee/Meyer pranks, and numerous observations on the human condition, machinations, and motiviations.
Thebad guys get what is coming to them, and there is financial recompense for the murdered victims families, and forMcGee & Meyer. As a reader, I felt McDonald had kicked me hard in the stomach, and while I was doubled over, rubbed my face innto the evil that men can do. Like cGee, I can return to mylife, but a part of this story clings to my memory months after I have read it, like a fictional metaphor to remind me of the darker than amber colors in the real world.

Algerians without Borders: The Making of a Global Frontier Society, by Allan Christelow

“Maps a fascinating and far-flung global frontier that Algerians have crossed over for centuries. This is not only a history of the modern and contemporary Algerian diaspora but also an instructive study of political, social, cultural, and economic encounters and negotiations that occur at the interstices of civilizations. Christelow contributes an impressive and erudite narrative that widens and enriches the corpus of modern Algerian historiography.”—Phillip C. Naylor, author of North Africa: A History from Antiquity to the Present

This account of Algeria through its migratory history begins in the last quarter of the eighteenth century by looking at forced migration through the slave trade. It moves through the colonial era and continues into Algeria’s turbulent postcolonial experience.

In Algerians without Borders, Allan Christelow examines the factors that have drawn or pushed Algerians to cross borders, both literal and metaphoric. He provides an in-depth analysis of the results of these crossings: from problematic efforts to secure external support for political projects, to building interfaith dialogue and the exploration of new ideas, to the emergence of new communities. He also investigates the return of border crossers to Algeria and the challenges they face in adapting to new environments, whether negotiating alliances, engaging in dialogue, or simply seeking legal acceptance.

Christelow concludes with a discussion of the last few decades of Algerian history. He explores how Algerian intellectuals operated outside of the country’s borders, spurred on by the rise of Islamism as well as by freer dialogues with Western powers, specifically Britain and the United States. The result is an alternate history of Algeria that demonstrates just how much its citizens’ engagement with other societies has transformed the country.

Allan Christelow, professor of history at Idaho State University, is the author of Muslim Law Courts and the French Colonial State in Algeria and Thus Ruled Emir Abbas.

Explore the vibrant and varied dance traditions of the islands

"Susanna Sloat has done it again. Following on the heels of the success of Caribbean Dance from Abakua to Zouk, Sloat's new interdisciplinary collection extends the reach of dance scholarship to command the attention of all genres of forward-thinking students of the Caribbean."--Joan Frosch, University of Florida

"Vivid portraits of important, rarely described corners of the Caribbean, revealed through voices both poetic and analytic."--Catherine Evleshin, Portland State University

Caribbean dance is a broad category that can include everything from nightclubs to sacred ritual. Making Caribbean Dance connects the dance of the islands with their rich multicultural histories and complex identities. Delving deep into the many forms of ritual, social, carnival, staged, experimental, and performance dance, the book explores some of the most mysterious and beloved, as well as rare and little-known, dance traditions of the region.

From the evolution of Indian dance in Trinidad to the barely known rituals of los misterios in the Dominican Republic, this volume looks closely at the vibrant and varied movement vocabulary of the islands. With distinctive and highly illuminating chapters on such topics as experimental dance makers in Puerto Rico, the government's use of dance in shaping national identity in Barbados, the role of calypso and soca in linking Anglophone islands, and the invented dances of dance-hall kings and queens of Jamaica, this volume is an evocative and enlightening exploration of some of the world’s most dynamic dance cultures.

Farm Security Administration Photographs of Florida, by Michael Carlebach, Jr. Eugene F. Provenzo

"A first-time presentation of significant and historically important photographs showing what life was like . . . for a substantial number of people living and working in Florida during the 1930s. . . . The photographs alone make a significant contribution to scholarship."--Samuel Proctor, University of Florida

"I want you to take pictures of everything you can find of what's happening to the people," Roy Emerson Stryker told the staff of the photography project of the Farm Security Administration, a New Deal agency.  "I think you are going to find it in the faces of the people."  From 1935 to 1943 FSA photographers combed the countryside, "making and disseminating images that explained America to Americans while they raised public and congressional support for Franklin D. Roosevelt's more controversial farm programs."  The basic concern of the FSA was agriculture, Stryker said.  "Dust, migrants, sharecroppers.  Our job was to educate the city dweller to the needs of the rural population."
Michael Carlebach and Eugene Provenzo, Jr., examine the work of the FSA in Florida as revealed in ninety-four images made by photographers John Collier, Dorothea Lange, Carl Mydans, Gordon Parks, Marion Post Wolcott, and Arthur Rothstein.  The work of Stryker's photography unit was described many years later by Arthur Rothstein:  "There was a feeling that you were in on something new and exciting, a missionary sense of dedication to this project, of making the world a better place to live in."
Like the rest of the South, rural Florida was desperately poor during the depression.  Per capita income in the state dropped from $510 in 1929 to $298 in 1933, and 157 banks permanently closed their doors between 1928 and 1940.  Many of the FSA photographs illustrate how poor men, women, and children lived, worked, and survived during hard times.  Balancing images of the impoverished are those of ordinary tourists, of the middle-class residents of small towns and villages, and of the well-to-do in cities along the southeastern coast.  Together with photographs depicting soil erosion, the misuse of farmlands in northern counties, and the decline of the fishing, wood pulp, and timber industries, the Florida FSA collection offers a brilliant composite portrait of the sunshine state in the grip of the Great Depression.

Michael Carlebach is associate professor in the School of Communication and director of the American Studies program at the University of Miami, as well as a widely published documentary and journalistic photographer.  His most recent book is The Origins of Photojournalism in America.

Eugene F. Provenzo, Jr. is a professor in the School of Education at the University of Miami and the author of many books, including Video Kids:  Making Sense of Nintendo.

From Library Journal
Unlike many other surveys of Farm Security Administration (FSA) photographs, these images of Florida in the 1930s exhibit a contrast of lifestyle. Although the migrant worker predominates, many images show daily middle-class life. Whether the FSA project was used to sell the New Deal or is an example of successful federally funded art, the photographs here, mostly by Marion Post Wolcott and Arthur Rothstein, reveal yet another facet of Depression-era America. The narrative is adequate, though much of the history can be found elsewhere. However, the plates are exceptionally well reproduced. Similar to Robert L. Reid's Picturing Minnesota (Minnesota Historical Pr., 1989), this book nicely rounds out the FSA literature. Highly recommended for strong photo and American studies collections.
