Crossing the Creek: The Literary Friendship of Zora Neale Hurston and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, by Anna Lillios

Two celebrated writers challenged by the color line

"In this fascinating and insightful book, Anna Lillios deepens our understanding of the complexity of the friendship between two of America's most beloved Southern female writers."--Virginia L. Moylan, author of Zora Neale Hurston's Final Decade

One of the twentieth century's most intriguing and complicated literary friendships was that between Zora Neale Hurston and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. In death, their reputations have reversed, but in the early 1940s Rawlings had already achieved wild success with her best-selling and Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Yearling, while Hurston had published Their Eyes Were Watching God to unfavorable critical reviews.

When they met, both were at the height of their literary powers. Hurston appears to have sought out Rawlings as a writer who could understand her talent and as a potential patron and champion. Rawlings did become an advocate for Hurston, and by all accounts a warm friendship developed between the two. Yet at every turn, Rawlings's own racism and the societal norms of the Jim Crow South loomed on the horizon, until her friendship with Hurston transformed Rawlings's views on the subject and made her an advocate for racial equality.

Anna Lillios's Crossing the Creek is the first book to examine the productive and complex relationship between these two major figures. Is there truth to the story that Hurston offered to work as Rawlings's maid? Why did Rawlings host a tea for Hurston in St. Augustine? In what ways did each write the friendship into their novels? Using interviews with individuals who knew both women, as well as incisive readings of surviving letters, Lillios examines these questions and many others in this remarkable book.

An extraordinary story in a marvellous book
By Society Nineteen
Lillios' rich and impeccably researched book will appeal to so many readers: fans of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Zora Neale Hurston most obviously, but also those who are interested in women's lives, women writers, the journey toward racial equality in America, the writing process, writers' careers, Florida history, life at Cross Creek...I could go on. The material Lillios gathers is fascinating, her readings of the women and documents are incisive, and she shapes her narrative in a sure, skillful manner that will appeal to both scholars and general readers.

This is the first study to explore the relationship between two beloved Florida women writers: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Zora Neale Hurston. The two women met in the 1940s, when Rawlings was enjoying the huge success of The Yearling and Hurston as yet had only a single, poorly reviewed book to her credit. As Lillios relates, the two immediately liked each other, and recognized the other’s talent; they visited several times and exchanged a fascinating correspondence over a number of years.

Despite this, friendship between two well-known figures, one African-American, in the still fiercely segregated South was fraught with complexity. There were practical questions: how, for example, could Hurston visit Rawlings at the segregated hotel Rawlings’ then-husband owned? Such issues may sound trivial today, but represented huge challenges—and potential danger—in the years when segregation ruled and the Klan still threatened the South.

In addition, there were inner, emotional challenges. Lillios excerpts letters from Rawlings that show the author struggling with her own attitudes toward race, attitudes of course strongly shaped by her time and place. The honesty with which Rawlings opens her assumptions to scrutiny—the rigor with which she challenges her own conscience—is deeply moving. Ultimately, her friendship with Hurston helped make her the advocate for racial equality she became in her later years.

Acting as literary sleuth, Lillios interviewed many individuals who knew the two women and/or witnessed their meetings in the attempt to clarify the truth about the two and their friendship. This is priceless and often poignant information, much of it no longer available from first-party sources since the people involved have passed on. As noted above, Lillios is also a perceptive reader of documents such as letters and manuscripts, as well as a good storyteller.

Lillios’ book gave me fresh insight into the minds and careers of two fascinating women writers. Almost as powerfully, it made me think about what a transformative journey friendship can be. Their friendship nurtured Rawlings and Hurston through the life challenges each experienced, supported each as she created complex literary work, and changed the perceptions of each for the better. This is a wonderful story in a luminous book, and deserves a wide readership.

This is a one-of-a-kind book that examines friendship, writing ...
By Ann L. Bellissimo
This is a one-of-a-kind book that examines friendship, writing and lives of two of the strongest literary personalities of the era between the two World Wars. That's saying a lot because it was a golden age for fiction in the U.S. which showcased Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Wolfe. Hurston wrote about Eatonville in North Florida, a small Black community about 80 miles from Cross Creek which was made famous by Rawlings. Lillios uses scholarship, perception and organized writing to put the lives, writing and friendship of these two women in context. This is a must-read if you are attracted to the writings of Hurston and Rawlings or a student of the era.

Good read.......

A rather slight book that is full of information. It stalls a bit, but moves along rather well. Good job capturing the essence of their friendship.
