About the Author
Sally Morrison recently retired after more than thirty years as a historic site specialist in the Florida Park Service. As the first curator of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings home, she brought vitality and enthusiasm to her restorations and interpretations of the author's life and milieu. Kate Barnes is a freelance artist and writer who still lives and works in the Cross Creek area.

Away from the crowds and into the real Florida

Sally Morrison's quiet and evocative prose and Kate Barnes's delightful illustrations accompany recipes that reflect a contemporary alternative to Cross Creek Cookery written by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Cross Creek and The Yearling. More than a cookbook, Cross Creek Kitchens takes the reader on a year long visit to the interior of Florida and a welcome respite from the artificiality well-known to the Florida visitor. If you don't try Best Ever Pie you're missing out on a really good thing. It is the Best Ever.

Cooking with the Seasons in a SImpler Time

My husband bought this book long before we met. He's a friend of author Sally Morrison and her brother and we have two lovely, evocative watercolors by Illustrator Kate Barnes. I love to cook with local produce and lived in north Florida for a few decades; grew a lot of my own food and put it up at times (try CCK's pickled okra!); lived many years without air conditioning and as a field biologist spent many an hour in Florida's outdoors year round. Few cookbooks concentrate on the things we grow in this region and as seasons begin, especially summer, I always find myself pulling Cross Creek Kitchens from the shelf for inspiration. Tonight I made Gutsy Gazpacho and was not disappointed. Now that I live in southern Louisiana (a local food mecca!) I added crab as it was served (Yum!).
But, back to the book, I invariably read through way more commentary and recipes than I actually cook because it's so evocative of life in a simpler time than our 24/7 lifestyle. One I like to remember. I'm writing this review as I buy a copy for my daughter who also likes to cook locally-grown produce as well as things she grows herself. Having grown up in north Florida she'll appreciate the specific southern vegetables featured in this cookbook, but she'll also learn what it feels like to live with the seasons in an earlier time.
Also- for the serious cook, there a blank pages at the end for your own notes and recipes! :) I think this book is a treasure to be savored and shared.

Great Recipes

My heritage is from the Cross Creek area. My Grandmother's family, the Turners helped Ms Rawlings get settled in. This kind of real southern cooking is what I love. After reviewing the recipes I ordered another copy and had it sent to a friend. I can't wait to try these recipes.
