The guide to congested, sneezing, itching, coughing relief in the Sunshine State
"An excellent overview of Florida allergens, combining real-life stories with scientific facts."--Patrick DeMarco, MD, practicing allergist
"If you have allergies and live in Florida, you need to have this book on your shelf. It blends useful allergy information with real-life examples to guide you through all the possible allergy triggers in the Sunshine State."--Wendy Wilber, Environmental Horticulture Agent
Florida is the land of sunshine, ocean breezes, magnificent live oak canopies, delicious seafood, and beautiful flowers. But it is also home to an environment that conspires to make many of us suffer from allergy symptoms ranging from light rashes and scratchy eyes to difficulty breathing or anaphylactic shock.
The Florida Allergy Handbook combines scientific explanations for what causes allergic reactions with practical advice on how to minimize symptoms along with cautionary tales from some of the most dramatic sufferers. With a direct, accessible style and a systematic approach, Theresa Willingham begins with the various overlapping pollen seasons and ends with seafood allergens. Along the way she examines plant allergies (including some caused by ingestion), the dangers of mold, and insects, which can cause allergic reactions through stings, bites, contact, or even just close vicinity.
Willingham explains how, of the two ubiquitous late winter bloomers, oak pollen
is far more allergenic than pine. She reveals how moldy duct work or airborne particles of cockroach carapaces in the home can lead to severe reactions and discusses recent research that suggests links between cleanliness and the rise of allergic reactions. She points out the surprising number of mosquito species that live in Florida (more than eighty) and explains why their bites itch, and she offers first-aid advice should you become one of the nearly 1,500 people injured by stingrays each year.
So grab your sunscreen, spritz on the bug spray, light a citronella candle, keep the antihistamines handy, watch what you eat, and fearlessly enjoy Florida's great outdoors.

From the Author
As with the Food Allergy Field Guide, my goal with the Florida Allergy Handbook is to empower people through knowledge. The better one understand both health and environmental limitations, the more effectively one can live within those limits, in control of, rather than at the mercy of the limiting factors.
Florida is a fantastic state, rich with fauna and flora that is beautiful to look at, wonderful to enjoy, and sometimes dangerous or at least uncomfortable. The Florida Allergy Handbook is designed to guide visitors and residents alike on a more enjoyable journey through the Sunshine State.

Excellent book for Florida allergy sufferers
By Thomas Leo Ogren
Florida, being such a diverse state, with such a multitude of life forms, is naturally "rich" also in allergies.
There are many possible allergies to sea life, to plant life, to ants, wasps, bees, molds, spores, insects, and other creatures....and all of it seems to be well covered in this fine book by Theresa Willingham.
The sections on spiders and insects and associated allergies are by themselves worth the price of the book...very interesting! Ms. Willingham is not just an informative writer, but she's also a very entertaining writer, too, and the whole book is quite readable.
However, even though my own work is quoted on the first page (I am author of Allergy-Free Gardening, and also of, Safe Sex in the Garden) I am not in total agreement with her on a number of pollen-related issues. For example, goldenrod. She writes that: goldenrod is often falsely accused of causing fall allergies, when in fact it is the fall-blooming ragweed that is actually triggering allergies.
In my own research I've found that often (30% or more) people become allergic to BOTH ragweed and goldenrod.
She writes that: plants are either pollinated by the wind (oaks) or by insects (apple blossoms), and that the insect-pollinated flowers do not cause allergies. Again, this is only partly true, only true some of the time.
There are a great many flowers (for example privet or willow flowers, or goldenrod flowers) that are in fact pollinated by BOTH insects and the wind....and all of these can, and do, trigger pollen-allergies.
But I don't mean to nit-pick here. This is overall a fine book, a welcome addition to the allergy literature of Florida, and for those lucky souls who live down there (I don't, but I do love to visit Florida), The Florida Allergy Handbook is packed full of loads of fun and interesting facts, and should prove quite useful to any and all Floridans who have any kind of an allergy.
